Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Isaiah 40 : 1-11 1 O Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice cries out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’ 6 A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. 9 Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ 10 See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11 He will feed

4

his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 85 : 1-2, 8-13

At 8am and 9am, please join in saying the verses printed in bold. At 10.30am the psalm is sung by the choir. 1 O Lord, you were gracious to your land: you restored the fortunes of Jacob. 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people: and covered all their sin. 8 I will hear what the Lord God will speak:

for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful ones, whose hearts are turned to him.

9 Truly his salvation is near to those that fear him: and his glory shall dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed each other; 11 Truth shall flourish out of the earth: and righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 The Lord will also give us all that is good: and our land shall yield its plenty. 13 For righteousness shall go before him: and tread the path before his feet.

SECOND READING 2 Peter 3 : 8-15a 8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING Mark 1 : 1-8

At 10.30am, please join in singing the Alleluia

Ferial Sarum F

Alleluia! Alleluia! Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all people shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 1 The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; 3 the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight”’, 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Anthem: And I saw a new heaven – Edgar Bainton (1880-1956) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. Postlude: Méditation – Maurice Duruflé (1902-86): Mr Lachlan Redd, Cathedral Sub-Organist

PSALM 87 Sung by the choir 1 Her foundations are upon the holy hills :

the Lord loveth the gates of Sion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. 2 Very excellent things are spoken of thee :

thou city of God. 3 I will think upon Rahab and Babylon :

with them that know me. 4 Behold ye the Philistines also :

and they of Tyre, with the Morians; lo there was he born. 5 And of Sion it shall be reported that he was born in her :

and the Most High shall stablish her. 6 The Lord shall rehearse it when he writeth up the people :

that he was born there. 7 The singers also and trumpeters shall he rehearse : All my fresh springs shall be in thee.

FIRST READING Isaiah 6 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ 4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted

7

out.’ 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ 9 And he said, ‘Go and say to this people: “Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.” 10 Make the mind of this people dull, and stop their ears, and shut their eyes, so that they may not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and comprehend with their minds, and turn and be healed.’ 11 Then I said, ‘How long, O Lord?’ And he said: ‘Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate; 12 until the Lord sends everyone far away, and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land. 13 Even if a tenth part remains in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled.’ The holy seed is its stump.

SECOND READING Luke 1 : 5-15 5 In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years. 8 Once when he was serving as priest before God and his section was on duty, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense. 10 Now at the time of the incense-offering, the whole assembly of the people was praying outside. 11 Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. 13 But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. 14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

COLLECT FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO ABOLISH NUCLEAR WEAPONS (ICAN) At today’s 10.30am service, special prayers for peace will be offered as we mark the presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize to ICAN in Oslo today. Founded in Melbourne in 2006, ICAN is a coalition of non-governmental organisations in 100 countries promoting adherence to and implementation of the United Nations nuclear weapon ban treaty. ICAN has worked to build a powerful global groundswell of public support for the abolition of nuclear weapons, with a humanitarian focus that highlights the catastrophic impact of nuclear detonation on people’s lives. HYMN 1:ON JORDAN’S BANK Charles Coffin (1676-1749), tr. John Chandler (1806-76) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 27

2

Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within; prepare we in our hearts a home, where such a mighty guest may come.

4

To heal the sick stretch out thy hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth, and let thy light restore earth’s own true loveliness once more.

3

For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge, and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away, like flowers that wither and decay.

5

All praise, eternal Son, to thee whose advent doth thy people free, whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore.

HYMN 2: HARK! A HERALD VOICE IS CALLING Trans. Edward Caswall (1814–78) New English Hymnal 5

2

Startled at the solemn warning, let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, her Sun, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies.

4

so when next he comes in glory, and earth’s final hour draws near, may he then as our defender on the clouds of heaven appear.

3

Lo! the Lamb, so long expected, comes with pardon down from heaven; let us haste, with tears of sorrow, one and all to be forgiven;

5

Honour, glory, virtue, merit, to the Father and the Son, with the co-eternal Spirit, while unending ages run.

11

HYMN 3: HAIL TO THE LORD’S ANOINTED James Montgomery (1771–1854) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 142 (omitting 4-5)

2

He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, where souls, condemned and dying, were precious in his sight.

3

He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth: before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow.

4

O’er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest; from age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blest: the tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand for ever, his changeless name of love.

12

HYMN 4: COME, THOU LONG-EXPECTED JESUS Charles Wesley (1707–88) New English Hymnal 3

2

Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art, dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

3

Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us for ever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.

4

By thine own eternal Spirit, rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all-sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne.

HYMN 5: FATHER WE GIVE YOU THANKS WHO PLANTED From the Didache (c.110) tr. Francis Bland Tucker (1895-1984) alt. Together in Song 495 Reproduced with permission

2

Lord, you have made all for your pleasure, and giv’n us food for all our days, giving in Christ the bread eternal; yours is the power, be yours the praise.

3

Over your church, Lord, watch in mercy, save it from evil, guard it still, perfect it in your love, unite it, cleansed and conforming to your will.

13

4

As grain, once scattered on the hillsides, was in the broken bread made one, so may your world-wide church be gathered into your kingdom by your Son.

HYMN 6: GLORY TO THE KING OF KINGS Geoff Bullock (b.1955) Together in Song 718. Reproduced with permission

Repeat Refrain

14

HYMN 7: SING WE THE PRAISES OF THE GREAT FORERUNNER Paul the Deacon (730-99) trans. C. S. Phillips (1883-1949) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 315 alt.

2

Lo, God’s high herald, swift from heav’n descending, gives to thy father tidings of thy coming, telling thy name, and all the tale of marvels that shall befall thee. 3

Oft had the prophets in the time before thee spoken in vision of the Daystar’s coming; but when he came, ’twas thou that didst proclaim him our holy Saviour.
