Tears of Joy. . . 2017 Easter Message . . . St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kamloops Happy Easter to Everyone . . . Some verses from John’s Gospel

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying,

They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’

When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.

Let me start with an admission – I cry easily. Several times during the past year I have found myself teary, sometimes in worship, at the joy of being here in your midst, seriously. Previous generations sometimes say that “men don’t cry.” Well, don’t believe them! Tears are part of an ordinary release of emotion for me and likely for you as well.

Maybe someone has died, or a friend or relative loses love, life or hope. In the course of many tears, life must move on, but my word, it’s hard sometimes. A woman once said to me “I can’t pray.” I replied “let us pray for you now” and we did, and she is much improved these days. Hallelujah!

Imagine with me the disappointment of the disciples, and Mary, as they considered that the entire Jesus-possibility had evaporated--violently, suddenly, seemingly permanently. What emotional overload overcame Mary and others as a result of their early-morning discovery: No body; No death; No hopelessness. And yet, tears of sadness can become tears of joy! Although many questions remained unanswered, even for us in our own day, our future with Jesus is bright. Hallelujah!

In preparing this letter I discovered that scientific analysis demonstrates that tears of sadness are physically different from tears of joy. I won’t get into the science here, but suffice to say that my prayer for us all, especially if we confront and endure sadness, is that all our tears might be transformed, by resurrection energy, into tears of joy. Hallelujah!

A happy and blessed Easter to all, for the wardens, cathedral committee, Bishop Barbara and all, Dean Ken
