Welcome to St. Mary’s“If we love one another, God remains in us,” we sing before the Gospel reading today. How appropriate on this Respect Life Sunday. All life, everyone’s life, is a gift from God, a gift given out of love by our Creator. Therefore, all life is precious in God’s eyes. If all life is precious, all life is worthy of our love. With that attitude and with God remaining in us, we can sing the second half of the Gospel acclamation, “and God’s love is brought to perfection in us.”

Cycle B -- Reflections on the Readings
Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Genesis 2:18-24; Psalm 128; Hebrews 2:9-11; Mark 10:2-16
Theme: A Committed and Lasting Relationship
Loyalty is a precious commodity. Relationships, if they are to remain loyal, must be grounded in mutual esteem and respect. Today's readings challenge our sense of commitment to one another.
Eli and his sons
Eli was a priest at the temple of Shiloh. In those days, the word and the vision of God were rare. Eli, who had two sons Hopni and Phinehas, did not train them properly in the fear of the Lord. Both the sons were notorious priests, having no regard either for God or for the people. They even desecrated the offerings of the Lord. Their sins became so abominable that the Lord deserted the Israelites in their battle. Their atrocities lead not only to their death in the battle, but also to the loss of the Ark of the Covenant and the death of their father Eli, and the death of Phinehas’s wife.
Eli failed to tutor his sons as obedient servants of the Lord and attentive hearers of the Lord’s word. He cannot have the excuse of inability, for he rightly trained Hannah’s son – Samuel, in the fear of the Lord. Parents have the responsibility of tutoring their children in their faith.
In today’s Gospel, we saw parents bringing their children to Jesus to bless them. Continued on Pg. 3………………..

Their desire is holy, their efforts commendable, and their example is to be emulated.
1. Parents Must Bring Their Children to Christ
Parents must bring their children to Christ in their early days. The first duty of parents is to dedicate their children to God, as Hannah in the Old Testament did to Samuel, and to instruct them in their faith in Jesus. They need to teach them to pray, even if it is a simple prayer as Eli the priest of Shiloh taught Samuel to pray: ‘Speak Lord, your servant is listening.’ Our investment of time, money and efforts in our children in training them up in the Christian faith shall serve as a measure against moral degeneration. King Solomon said, “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray (Pro. 22:6).”
2. The Kingdom of God Belongs to Those Who are Childlike
When the disciples rebuked the parents, who brought their children to Jesus to be blessed by Him, Jesus was indignant at the disciples. He loved children, and we find Him taking time off from His journey to Jerusalem in order to take them into His arms and bless them. Children may have too little understanding, but the blessing that Jesus gives shall remain with them for all eternity.
“The kingdom of God”, said Jesus, “belongs to such as these Children).” Children are dependent and trusting. They are dependent on their parents for everything and they totally trust them, nay trust everybody. They are not maliciously ambitious after prominence or fame or power or wealth or position. Their anger is short.
These characters of the children are necessary for any man or woman to enter the kingdom of God. Every person must come to God like a child. Continued on Pg. 4…………………

As a child depends and trusts upon its parents, so we must depend totally on God. As a child who is humble and forgiving, so we must banish pride and hatred from our hearts.
The lesson for us in all these readings is simply this: Emphasize qualities that promote loyalty. We must honor husbands and wives for their commitment and dedication and congratulate family members for their contributions to the common good. People should be grateful for the unconditional generosity of their friends. No matter how many examples we see to the contrary, loyalty is still number one for Christians.
May Christ, who lovingly embraced the children, and laid His hands on them and blessed them, embrace and bless each one of us. Shalom!

The meaning of the Hail Mary Each line of the popular Catholic prayer recited countless times since our childhood — the Hail Mary — is rich in meaning and is meant to lead us to reflect deeply on our faith. Although the prayer is addressed to Our Lady, the connecting thread throughout the prayer is the one at the center of our faith: Jesus. If we read it closely, we see that it’s a Christ-centered
prayer that gives Jesus great praise.
The Hail Mary prayer is separated into two main parts: 1. Recognizing Mary as the sinless mother of Jesus, the one who gave
birth to our Savior, and played a role in our salvation. 2. Asking Blessed Mary to pray for us “now and at the hour of our
death,” and to be our intercessor before her son. Pope John Paul II, who was devoted to Blessed Mary, wrote of the importance and meaning of this prayer in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae. Let’s take a closer look at this prayer to understand why it’s one of the top three prayers (along with the Our Father Prayer and Glory Be) of our faith.
Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you
The opening line of the prayer is taken directly from the Bible when the angel Gabriel appears to Mary during the Annunciation of the Lord (Luke 1:28) informing her that she will become pregnant by the Holy Spirit. When he greets her he says “Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you.” To Pg 6.
5
Here the angel is declaring his admiration to Mary for being born full of God’s grace, (or without original sin) and for being the woman worthy of praise for being chosen by God to carry our all-holy, all-powerful Savior in her womb— “the Lord is with you.”
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus
After learning she was pregnant, Mary visited her relative, Elizabeth. As soon as Elizabeth laid eyes on Mary, she said with great awe the words, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.” (Luke 1:41). Like a star-struck fan a million times over, she is in awe of young Mary for being the most “blessed” of all women and being the only one worthy of carrying Jesus, the most “blessed” baby in her womb.
In these first two lines, it’s important to recognize as Pope John Paul II explains that “although the Hail Mary is addressed to Our Lady, it is to Jesus that the act of love is ultimately directed.” Through their words, the angel Gabriel and Elizabeth are giving praise to God for the Incarnation and the mysteries of our faith: that God was born among us, walked the earth, and ultimately died on the cross for us and rose from the dead.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death
The second part of the prayer is where we declare that we are sinners and in need of lots of help. We all know that one day we will meet our maker and have been warned that living a life of sin can stand in the way of our salvation. We’re asking Blessed Mary to pray for us on our behalf to her son, our Lord, now, and most importantly, at the hour of our death. Again, here we are pointing out that Mary is the “Mother of God,” the God whom we acknowledge as being the Holy One and the Highest. He is the only one who can forgive us our sins. Continued on Pg. 7…………………….

Reflect on the words in the prayer
When you say the Hail Mary, stop after each line and reflect on what you’ve just said. Think about where we’d be if Jesus didn’t die for our sins? Or if Blessed Mary didn’t say yes to God’s plan to give birth to Jesus. When you think about it this way, you can’t help but join Elizabeth and the angel Gabriel in praising Blessed Mary for her willingness to play a pivotal role in God’s plan for our salvation, and adoring God for coming up with the plan. When you say the Hail Mary, stop after each line and reflect on what you’ve just said.

A pastor went out one Saturday to visit his church members. At one house, it was obvious that someone was home, but
nobody came to the door even though the preacher knocked several times. Finally, the preacher took out his card, wrote out “Revelation 3:20” on the back of it, and stuck it in the door.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me. – Revelation 3:20
The next day, the card turned up in the collection plate. Below the preacher’s message was written the following notation:
I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. – Genesis 3:10
Holy Humor
A Baker was asked to print 1 John 4:18 on a wedding cake. He forgot, and instead
printed John 4:18.1st John 4:18 (ESV) reads “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”John 4:18 (ESV) on the other hand reads “For you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.”
