Table of DutiesHusbands, Wives, Parents, Children

Certain passages of Scripture for various holy orders and positions, admonishing them about their duties and responsibilities

Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions

Memorization Verses:

1 Oh, blest the house, whate'er befall,

Where Jesus Christ is all in all!

A home that is not wholly His--

How sad and poor and dark it is!

2 Oh, blest that house where faith is found

And all in hope and love abound;

They trust their God and serve Him still

And do in all His holy will!

3 Oh, blest the parents who give heed

Unto their children's foremost need

And weary not of care or cost.

May none to them and heav'n be lost!

4 Oh, blest that house; it prospers well.

In peace and joy the parents dwell,

And in their children's lot is shown

How richly God can bless His own.

5 Then here will I and mine to-day

A solemn promise make and say:

Though all the world forsake His Word,

I and my house will serve the Lord!

Sing it!

Open Prayer for families:Psalm 127-128

He´s got the whole world in His hands…

He´s got the tiny little baby in His hands…

He´s got the brothers and the sisters in His hands…

He’s got the mamas and the daddys… He’s got the Grandmas and the

Grandpas… He’s got the Aunts and the Uncles… He’s got the friends and the cousins… He’s got everybody here…

He's got the whole world in His hands.

Sing it!

Discussion Statistics“The highest rate of divorce in the 2001

survey was 41 percent for men who were then between the ages of 50 to 59, and 39 percent for women in the same age group.”

“Professor Bradley Wright, a sociologist at the University of Connecticut, explains from his analysis of people who identify as Christians but rarely attend church, that 60 percent of these have been divorced. Of those who attend church regularly, 38 percent have been divorced”

Discussion QuestionWhat are some threats to

Christian marriage and family we see today?

How does society view “Christian Family”?

Is “Christian family” the same as “traditional family”?

What does a “Christian Family” look like?

What is Christian Family?

Three types of Family(overlapping influence)Spiritual family/kingdom

"My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice.”

Visible church family“Give my greetings to the brothers and

sisters at Laodicea” (Col. 4:14-15)Biological/close family unit

“Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.” (Prov. 1:8)

Connections Between Types of Family

Forgiveness and Love are at the heart of all threeChrist forgives the church, brings into

heavenChristians forgive one another and

develop unity in worshipFamilies teach, model and practice

forgiving each other as a state overflowing from the first two.

Families are 4th dimensional, constantly changing, organic, and in flux. This includes states of relationships.

Sin cannot separate the Christian from the birthright in families.

pre-eminent family.Singular unit with distinct

persons.Perfect, complete, selfless love.Equally strong, righteous,

serving distinct roles, yet everyone shares in the cause, burden and benifit.

Family quotes: Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them.

And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

SS Family

The Lord calls husbands to love and respect their wives, and pray with them.

1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you1 of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.

• Pray: Lord, in parables and

preaching, You compared Yourself with a bridegroom who brought joy to his compaions and fulfilled his vow to his bride. Grant joy and fulfillment in married life. Lead husbands to treat their wives with

respect and regard them as partners and heirs in the gracious gifts of God. Bind their hearts together in prayer and turn all complaints into requests for Your mercy. In Your love, heave mercy on Your people and prepare them for the marriage feast in heaven. Amen.

M Husbands

The Lord calls wives to submit to their husbands out of love and respect.

Eph 5:22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, bas to the Lord.

1 Peter 3:5-6 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

• Pray: Lord, if the husband is the

head of the household, may we not also say that the wife is the heart of the household. Grant that husbands and wives love and respect one another according to Your calling.

Fill all minds with the kindest thoughts and all hearts with sincerity, that we may love one another as You love Your church. Amen.

T Wives

The Lord calls parents to nurture the children through training and instruction in God's Word. Although the church and government may assist in teaching the Law and Gospel to children, parents bear this responsibility before God first.

Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

• Lord, almighty God, Father of mercies,

among other gifts of Your grace You have put children in my life, for which blessing I heartily praise and magnify You. However, I regard these children as precious pledges, which You have entrusted to me and will require at my hand. I regard them as souls that Jesus has purchased with His holy blood, the Holy Spirit has sanctified in Holy Baptism, and You have adopted as Your children. O Father of all grace, I come to You and in heartfelt prayer commend to You these

children. I will do what I can: I will bring them up for Your honor, admonish them, correct them, instruct them, and pray for them. But, O Lord, Lord, in all my efforts You must perform the important part. Bless these children. Attend them at their going out and coming in. Give them a believing, humble, obedient, and godly heart, that, like the child Jesus, they may increase in stature, wisdom, and favor with God and men. Imprint upon their hearts the image of Jesus, in order that they may ever keep, until their blessed end, a gracious God and an unstained conscience. Amen. (Johann Friedrich Starck, 1680-1756).

W Parents

Children should hear and obey their parents according to the Lord's commands.

Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land

• Pray: Give me an obedient heart, O

heavenly Father, that I may not offend my parents, or knowingly and willfully grieve them. Grant that I may at all times place before my eyes the example of my Jesus, who not only was obedient to You, His heavenly Father, but also to His foster father Joseph and to His mother Mary. I

humbly ask pardon now, O God, of You and of my parents, and promise that by Your grace I will strive to rejoice their heart with my obedience and Christian conduct. Grant me Your Holy Spirit that I may walk as a child of God in faith, godliness, chastity, and the fear of God, so that on the Last Day I may with my parents stand at Your right hand and enter with them into Your glory. Amen. (Starck).

Th Children
