  • To help bring parishioners together in a spiritual activity and promote devotion to Mary, the Knights of Columbus Supreme council announced a new church activity, the 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Knights, their families and all parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. Members of Our Mary Queen of Knights Council will lead us in the Rosary after 8 AM Mass on Sunday, November 29th in the church. All are invited to join us in this prayer. ——————————————————————————————————————

    WHY PRAY TO THE SAINTS?

Sport figures, comic-book heroes, and celebrities do things most of us can’t and wish we could. What’s even better about saints is that they do things the rest of us could and would be doing—if only we made the singular decision to join their ranks. Technically, you make the register of saints by undergoing a process called canonization, which includes a thorough examination of the life and circumstances of the person under con-sideration. But for every saint who makes the official canon (list), there are many other holy people in each generation who live and die in equally astonishing measures of grace. What it comes down to is that canonized saints are held up as examples of virtuous living for the whole church, but the saints of God are more numerous still. Catholics don’t worship saints. Worship and adoration are reserved for God alone. What we offer saints is veneration: due honors for their achievements. We also seek the intercession of saints: their spiritual assistance. Saint Dominic consoled his Dominican brothers at his death by reminding them: “Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death and I shall help you then more effectively than during my life.” (www.preparetheword.com)

Join us as we journey deep into who we are as Catholics. We will use the award winning multi-media Catholicism Series produced by Father Robert Barron. This study series travels around the world and back in time to show us the truth about Catholicism. If you are a stranger to Catholicism or have been a Catholic your entire life—join us as we capture the beauty and logic found in our treasure of Catholicism. Tuesday Evenings at 7 PM in the Social Hall

  • OK, that’s it for now, I’ll see you again next year

National Bible Week NOVEMBER 15 TO 21

    TURKEY SHOOT

Our turkey is very short on feathers. He usually has a total of fourteen by the date of the Turkey Shoot drawing. The weather is getting colder and he needs to be feathered completely this week if he is to survive. Please do whatever you can for our only Parish-wide fundraiser. The drawing will be held in the Social Hall, next Sunday, November 22nd after the 10:00 Mass. Refreshments will be served. If you need extra tickets or did not receive yours in the mail, please contact Eileen or Karen, Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 am to 2:30 pm at 758-5098. This is a good time to get even with friends and family who are con-sistently approaching you for donations or to purchase items to help their individual charities. This is the only Parish-wide fundraiser we have and our goal is $15,000.00 which will give BUBBA his full array of feathers. Please do whatever you can to help dress up this desperate turkey. Thanks for your help! Tickets are $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00 or 6 for $50.00. The winners will be notified by phone after the drawing on Sunday, November 22nd. Thank you for supporting our only parish fundraiser. First Prize $1,000.00 Second Prize $500.00 Third Prize $250.00 Five Prizes of $100.00

  • Dear St. John Women’s Club and Parish Family, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your generous donations supporting the women and children of the Crisis Center for South Suburbia. Your kindness and charity is unbelievable! From school supplies, so that the children at the shelter can get a good education to infant clothes to warm coats and shoes and every-thing in between speaks to the compassion St. John Church has for others less fortunate. Your kind-heartedness means so much to me and to the families that the Crisis Center serves every day. You are mak-ing a difference in the lives of so many! Peace, Karen Leluga & Crisis Center for South Suburbia

    GETTING THROUGH THE

TOUGH TIMES “It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s read-ings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Christians developed very different traditions for confessing sin. They see the priest as a witness to God’s action, a physician, if you will, rather than a judge. A person confesses sin to God while standing in front of an icon of Jesus, face to face. Without a grill, in the full light of day, near a table with an open Gospel book, the penitent asks the Lord for mercy. A priest standing to the side might offer counsel and confirm God’s gift of forgiveness. Rather than list sins and offenses, an East-ern Christian is more likely to speak of a disposition of heart toward God and neighbor, and the desire to forgive those who have wronged them. Remarkably, although only a priest can pronounce the prayers of forgiveness, lay people, includ-ing married men and women, single Christians, monks, and nuns, may witness the confession. This is akin to the ancient Celtic practice of a “soul friend” as a spiritual mentor. Bishops may bless anyone with sufficient theological knowledge and discretion to do this. Eastern Catholics in the United States have largely drifted away from this tradition and toward Latin Rite customs such as confessional screens, set formulas and prayers, and penances. Today, in the interest of preserving the authentic tra-dition of the Eastern Church, there is a move to restore the older form. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J.
