SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION

Today we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Easter traditionally known as the ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’. That is, because each year on this particular Sunday, we have readings coming from the 10th chapter of John’s Gospel. In our present liturgical year we hear only the first part of this chapter, verses 1-10. These verses actually emphasize the image of Jesus as the ‘gate’. The theme of the ‘Good Shepherd’ is developed in the later parts of that chapter.

So, what does Jesus mean when He calls himself the ‘sheep gate?’ To understand Jesus’ metaphor, the enclosed image might help.

In ancient times, each village would have a common walled-in pen where every evening the different shepherds from the village would bring all their sheep. There was one entrance to the pen, which often was just an opening. The gatekeeper, often risking his own life, would guard the opening by lying across it, making sure that wild animals or robbers would not enter to harm or steal the sheep. The gatekeeper was literally ‘the gate’. In the morning the shepherds would return and the gatekeeper would allow the shepherds to call their sheep out and lead them to pasture during the day.

In seeking the answer to the above question it is worthy to note what Saint John Paul II had once said when referring to this passage: In Jesus Christ, the Father expresses the whole truth concerning creation. We believe that in the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus the Father reveals all his love for humanity. That is why Christ calls himself 'the sheep gate' (John 10:7). As the gate, he stands guard over the creatures entrusted to him. He leads them to the good pastures: 'I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be safe. He will go in and out, and find pasture' (10:9).

To find a pasture is to find life. In the hustle and bustle of today's times let us remember to always choose Jesus. May He be our ‘Gate’. Have a Blessed Sunday—Krystyna Maciorowski

Dzisiaj świętujemy IV Niedzielę Wielkanocną tradycyjnie nazywaną ‘Niedzielą Dobrego Pasterza” z uwagi na to, że każdego roku w tę właśnie niedzielę czytany jest urywek z 10-go rozdziału Janowej Ewangelii zatytułowanego ‘Dobry Pasterz’. W obecnym roku liturgicznym czytana jest pierwsza część tego rozdziału. Są to wersety 1 do 10, które pod-kreślają wizerunek Jezusa nie jako dobrego pasterza lecz jako "bramy". Temat "Dobrego Pasterza" jest rozwinięty w późniejszych częściach tego rozdziału. Co to znaczy, gdy Jezus nazywa siebie "bramą owiec"?

Może widoczny powyżej obraz starożytnej zagrody pomoże nam lepiej zrozumieć Jezusową metaforę. W starożytnych czasach każda wioska miała wspólną owczarnię ogrodzoną płotem, gdzie każdego wieczoru miejscowi pasterze przyprowadzali swoje owce. Owczarnia za wejście miała tylko zwykły otwór. Wyznaczony pasterz-dozorca, często ryzykując własnym życiem, strzegł otworu barykadując go swoim ciałem. W ten sposób zamykał dostęp złodziejom i dzikim zwierzętom. Rankiem dozorca pozwalał powracającym po swoje owce pasterzom wywoływać je na zewnątrz i prowadzić na pastwiska.

Poszukując odpowiedzi na powyżej postawione pytanie warto, przypomnieć, co powiedział kiedyś św. Jan Paweł II, odnosząc się do tego fragmentu: „W Jezusie Chrystusie Ojciec wyraża całą prawdę o stworzeniu. Wierzymy, że w życiu, w śmierci i zmartwychwstaniu Jezusa Ojciec obnaża całą swoją miłość do ludzkości. Dlatego Chrystus nazywa się "bramą owiec" (Jan 10: 7). Jako brama stoi na straży, broniąc powierzonych Mu przez Ojca stworzeń, a jako Pasterz prowadzi je na żyzne pastwiska: "Ja jestem bramą. Jeżeli kto wejdzie przez mnie, będzie zbawiony - wejdzie i wyjdzie, i znajdzie pokarm." (10: 9).

Znalezienie pokarmu jest znalezieniem życia. W zgiełku dzisiejszych czasów pamiętajmy, aby zawsze wybierać Jezusa. Niech On będzie naszą Bramą. Krystyna Maciorowski

Delicious homemade goodies will be sold after each Mass on the weekend of May 13/14. This a parish fundraiser so please buy a plate or two for mom or just for yourself!!!

Plates will be available in various sizes at $4, $6, $8. Baked donations will be accepted on Friday, May 12th from 5:30- 8pm and on Saturday, May 13th from 4- 7pm in the parish hall. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

Regular scheduled Hospitality in May will be cancelled due to this fundraiser.

This is a special year for the Archdiocese of Chicago as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities’ centennial year is truly a celebration for all of us because its great tradition of charitable care has included the support of volunteers and donors from every parish in the archdiocese. For 100 years, through every era of war, peace, poverty and prosperity, Catholic Charities has worked together with the faithful to fulfill the Gospel mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, welcome the stranger, comfort the afflicted, and bring hope to the hopeless.

Each year on Mother’s Day, we have an opportunity to make a financial contribution to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. This year, as we face increasing violence in our communities, it is a critical time for us to come together to sup-port Catholic Charities. the need for deacons. It is something I am considering.

How do I know if I have a vocation?

What steps should I take next?

Answer: Any and all gifts that the Holy

Spirit gives to the church are for the good of the community. As members of the body of Christ,

what one member does affects all; what the body does also affects each member. A vocation or call to ministry is tested and verified by the church. Through prayer,

instruction, and service, a vocation is tested, and then

acknowledged by the official call to orders or to service. If you are considering becoming a deacon, the first step would be to talk to

your pastor. He will be able to give you more specific information on

the program in your diocese, what is expected of you, and how you

apply. You might also begin to see a spiritual director, someone who

can help you with your faith journey and vocation

discernment. They do so by focusing on prayer, your

relationship with God, and spiritual practices. Finally, you'll

need to see the diocesan vocation director in charge of deacons to
