As my own parents age, I am conscious of the preciousness of the time they spend with my children and it warms my heart when I see their involvement in their lives. For many of our children, their grandparents are living overseas and are not seen or spoken to very often. Having significant adults and elderly friends to talk with and be around, I believe is a blessing that provides children the joy of experiencing the wisdom and insights that comes with age and helps build unique relationships of mutual respect and admiration. Yesterday was a time of joy and celebration as we paid tribute to our elders; the grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbours and special friends. It was a lovely day with many in attendance and many who contributed in a variety of ways. Words taken from yesterday’s liturgy: “Some people we call grandparents because they are our parents' parents they are blood relations. Some people we call elders, and some we call Special Friends. Our endearment for all these people is because of the compassion, concern, wisdom, and generosity that they demonstrate toward us. (Today) we pay tribute to our older generation. Our Grandparents, special friends and elders of our community are our greatest treasure, the founders of a loving legacy, the greatest storytellers, the keepers of traditions that linger on in cherished memory and the primary source of our recent histories. Their very special love sets them apart. Through happiness and sorrow, through their special love and care, they keep us close at heart. They inspire us and encourage us to be shining lights and to be the very best we can be and we sincerely thank you.RECONCILIATION INFORMATION NIGHT for all Year 3 students who are enrolled for this Sacrament TONIGHT 27 th JULY 7:00pm In the Glassroom GRANDPARENTS LUNCHEON & PRAYER ASSEMBLY A very sincere thanks is extended to all who contributed to our Grandparents & Special friends Day yesterday. From the Acting Principal I was fortunate to have had my Grandfather part of my life well into my adult years and very blessed that he was a part of my children’s lives when they were young. As my own parents age, I am conscious of the preciousness of the time they spend with my children and it warms my heart when I see their involvement in their lives. VALE MONICA DEBNEY Monica Debney belonged to the Debney family who operated the Debney Tannery from 1877 to 1935. The area bounded by Mt Alexander Road, Racecourse Road and the Moonee Ponds Creek was prone to flooding and was acquired by the Melbourne City Council in 1923 later to be the site of the current Flemington High Rise Monica was one of a group of ladies (including Maisie Norden, Joan Bergin, Margaret Chapman and Betty Herrick), who worked in the St Brendan's Tuck shop for over 60 years - a monumental effort! Initially the tuck shop was open every day but as the ladies progressed in age they reduced the days but continued to open the tuckshop at least one day a week right up until their mid 90’s. To Monica, manners were very important and you can be assured that nothing was sold at the tuckshop without a clear please and thank you. Monica knew every child's name in the school. It was not unusual for parents to get a call if the students regular order was missing, advising the parent that their child was not at school, "was he ok". Monica passed away last Sunday 23rd July. Her funeral will be held at St Brendan's Church on Tuesday 1st August at 10:30 am. We offer our deepest sympathies to her family and friends at this sad time and give our thanks to God for the life, friendship and generosity of a much loved member of our community. Yours sincerely
