County final day represents a special occasion for all involved, and particular thanks has to go to the club officers, mentors and coaches at all grades, for their contribution to the players’ development over the years. This is the culmination of those efforts, and you should be rightly proud of your achievement in promoting the game in your clubs.
Congratulations to our Senior and Intermediate Championship winners from 2019, Corofin and Oughterard, on winning their All Ireland titles, with Corofin completing a record three in-a-row. A fantastic achievement.
This year’s Senior final is a novel pairing with Mountbellew-Moylough looking to win the Frank Fox Cup for the first time since 1986, and Maigh Cuilinn hoping to achieve success for the first time ever, with their last appearance in the final being in 1977.
The Intermediate final will be keenly contested with two clubs representing strong footballing traditions, North Galway neighbours Cortoon Shamrocks and Kilkerrin-Clonberne, competing to return to the senior grade.
Our Junior finalists, North GPC winners St Brendan’s and West GPC winners Naomh Feichín, Clifden also represent footballing strongholds as they battle to gain promotion to the Intermediate grade for 2020. The young men of St James’ and
Tuam Stars meet in the County Minor B final, and we wish them the best in their efforts.
This weekend’s finals are unique, in that we are now living in a vastly changed world with limits on the numbers permitted to attend our games. On behalf of all involved, thanks to our media partners who bring the games to the public - Galway Bay Fm, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, TG4, The Tuam Herald and Connacht Tribune, and also to our streaming partner Nemeton TV for their contribution.
2020 will be remembered as the year that Covid-19 unfortunately has brought about huge and unwelcome changes in all our lives. The response of the GAA clubs in our county has been phenomenal. Every player, mentor, officer, and member have demonstrated extraordinary determination, resilience, and empathy towards others from the onset of this virus which ensured the games could be played competitively and to the highest standard whilst adhering to all public health guidelines. These efforts have been complimented and supported by the team of volunteers who host and organise our games.
Thanks to all involved for their voluntary work in organising and running the championships, gatemen, grounds staff, referees, umpires and linesmen, along with various officers supporting the playing of 250 adult championship games over the last two months.

Paddy Talty was born in Kilkee in 1929 and arrived in Tuam in 1947 and quickly got involved in the fledgling Tuam Stadium committee and became Hon. Secretary in 1954, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. It was a labour of love and he made the short walk from his home in Church View to ‘The Farm’, as he called it, to make sure everything was ready for the next match. He oversaw many developments in the Stadium including the covered stand in the 60s, the relocation of the dressing-rooms, improvements to turnstile entrances and terracing. He served as President of the Stadium from 2010 and was thrilled with the progress being made in the last few years due to the DAFTS Committee. He continued to visit the Stadium up to the last few weeks of his life in March.

THe inter-county Gaa season is now just two weeks away with the Galway senior footballers returning to competitive action against mayo on Sunday, october 18 at Tuam Stadium.
It will be the first of two fixtures televised live by TG4 that afternoon (throw-in: 2pm) and will be followed by the clash of Donegal and Tyrone from Ballybofey (4pm). The two remaining Division 1 matches will take place a day earlier on October 17
when Monaghan host Kerry in Inniskeen (2pm) and Dublin welcome the already-relegated Meath to Parnell Park (7pm).
Under new boss Padraic Joyce, Galway enjoyed a very positive spring, winning four of their five National League matches against Monaghan, Donegal, Tyrone and Meath, and will resume their challenge for a first Division 1 title since 1981. Kerry handed the Tribesmen their only defeat before the campaign was postponed in mid-March amid the Coronavirus pandemic. Three points currently separate the counties at the top with Galway (8) ahead of Kerry (7), Dublin and Tyrone (6 each), Donegal and Monaghan (5 each) in the table.
Galway will face reigning five in-a-row All-Ireland champions Dublin in the final regulation round at Pearse Stadium on Sunday, October 25 (2pm). Details have yet to be revealed on the Round 7 matches that will be televised, a weekend that also sees the start of both the Leinster and Munster Senior
Hurling Championships.
Meanwhile, the dates, times and venues for the Connacht Senior Football Championship have also been released. London and New York will not compete this year and the competition will get underway with a quarter-final clash between Leitrim and Mayo at Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada on Sunday, November 1 (1.15pm).
Galway will commence their quest to regain the JJ Nestor Cup with a semi-final against Sligo at Pearse Stadium on Saturday, November 7 (1.15pm). Dr Hyde Park will host the second semi-final between Roscommon and the winner between Mayo and Leitrim a day later on Sunday, November 8 (1.30pm). The Connacht final has been confirmed for Sunday, November 15 (1.30pm). This year’s provincial and All-Ireland Senior Football Championships will operate on a straight knockout basis.
Meanwhile, TG4 will also televise Galway’s All-Ireland U-20 football semi-final against Kerry at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick on Saturday, October 17 (4.30pm). The U-20 final has been pencilled in for a week later on Saturday, October 24 with Dublin and Tyrone on the opposite side of the draw.
Details of the restructured Connacht Minor (U-17) Football Championship have also been confirmed. Galway, under new manager Alan Glynn, take on Leitrim in the preliminary round on Friday, October 23. A date with Roscommon is the prize for the winner a week later on Friday, October 30. Mayo and Sligo have been drawn in the second semi-final with the provincial decider slated for Friday, November 6. All matches will be played on grass surfaces at the Connacht GAA Centre in Bekan.

A TRIBUTE TO ABSENT FRIENDSThey will be remembered with respect and affection: francis Stockwell, Jimmy Glynn, Kieran o’Sullivan, Seán Burke and Brendan Coffey went to their eternal reward this year.
Most recently, there was great sadness in Galway sporting circles on hearing the news from london of the death of Seán Burke, a native of Mullaghmore, Moylough. Born on September 2nd 1943, Seán died two days before his 77th birthday. He was particularly well known as a driving force behind the Galway Association in london for the past 40 years.
Seán and his brother Bob funded, for many years, a coaching programme, known as the Bobbyjo scheme, for Galway under-age football. They continued to be generous patrons of Galway GAA in many ways, helping quietly and without seeking public credit.
Francis Stockwell, Tullinadaly Hill, Tuam, died on August 26th after an illness bravely borne. Following in the famous footsteps of his father Frank, a hero of Galway’s All-Ireland SFC Final victory in 1956, Francis was also a brilliant forward and he starred for St Jarlath’s in their All-Ireland Colleges Championship victory of 1978.
In 2002, while a member of the non-teaching staff at St Jarlath’s, Francis was in the management team as the late Fr Oliver Hughes guided the Tuam school to their 12th Hogan Cup title.
With Tuam Stars, Francis won county minor championship medals in 1978 and ‘79, U-21 titles in 1980 and ‘81; and his two county senior championship medals were won in 1984 (the Centenary Year of the GAA) and in 1989.
He also played county minor football, and in 1985 he won an All-Ireland junior championship medal with Galway.
A Corofin club stalwart who also played in four grades for Galway in the 1960s, Jimmy Glynn from Tavanagh, Cummer, died on June 24th. Having formed a powerful midfield partnership with his clubmate Frank Canavan, Jimmy helped Corofin to win the 1962 county minor title; and he went on to win a county junior championship medal in ‘63, the year he also played for the Galway minor team. In 1964 he won a Connacht U-21 championship medal; and he helped Corofin reach the county senior final, which they lost to a star-studded Mountbellew team.
With Galway seniors, he played at midfield for the 1965 National League winning team and was in the panel for the All-Ireland final against Kerry, the second leg of the historic three-in-a-row. Earlier in that season, he won an All-Ireland junior medal.
In 1967, Galway defeated Dublin in the National League ‘home’ final at Croke Park, 0-12 to 1-7, with Pat Donnellan and Jimmy Glynn at midfield for the

winners. Next time out, New York won the League title at Gaelic Park (over two Sundays), with Galway looking a tired team after their Three-in-a-Row and National League exertions.
A winner of Connacht and All-Ireland minor football championship medals with Galway in 1976, Kieran O’Sullivan from Oughterard died on May 5th, peacefully, at his home after a long illness.
In late January of this year, Kieran’s son Eddie proudly led his parish club to All-Ireland intermediate championship glory at Croke Park. Eddie was named after his grandfather, one of four O’Sullivan brothers - Edward, Denis, Tom and Charlie - who
helped Cumann Peile Séamus Ó Máille Uachtar Árd to win the 1938 County SFC final against Ballinasloe at Parkmore, Tuam.
In 1976, Kieran honoured that proud family tradition with his very fast, skilful displays for the Johnny Geraghty-coached Galway minor team, including four points against Mayo from right full-forward in the Connacht championship semi-final: 0-18 to 2-7. Next time out he hit 2-4 in a 5-16 to 3-3 win over Sligo in the Connacht final. In the All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin at Croke Park, Kieran scored one point in a thrilling contest, won by Galway 2-8 to 2-7, and in the final against Cork he top-scored with 1-2; his goal, just before half-time, came at the end of blistering run through the Cork defence. It set up a glorious victory for Galway, 1-10 to 0-6.
Tributes came from all over Ireland and from many Galway Gaels abroad following the death, on June 14th, of Brendan Coffey, affectionately known as ‘The Boss.’ Brendan was so well known and well liked that TG4 reported on his funeral in their main evening news.
Galway GAA secretary Séamus O’Grady, quoted by the Tuam Herald, said Brendan was synonymous with football in the county for the past five decades, adding: “He was closely associated with all our county teams, often travelling on
team buses with the players. He got on well with everybody; he was a great character, a very friendly person. He supported Galway teams playing games all over Ireland and several times in London, and he had a great relationship with all our team managers.”
Herald sports editor Billy Coss gave a special mention to Brendan’s great work fund-raising for many good causes.
