Principal’s News

Welcome

I warmly welcome you all back to Term 2. It is lovely to chat to the children about their holidays. It will be another very busy term. The calendar on the next page indicates how busy. Please take note of important dates. I am very excited about beginning another school term and working with you all. Please contact me if I can help you with anything at all. I am always happy to help and listen. I hope that you all have a very happy and rewarding Term 2 and that you feel welcome at St. Anthony’s. I certainly feel welcomed and enriched by the people who make up this vibrant community.

ELC Grand Opening

On Monday morning I had the great privilege of welcoming the officials in opening the Alfred Street ELC. The honourable Martin Pakula and Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, Youhorn Chea joined other dignitaries and our very own Year 5/6 leaders in cutting the ribbon. A special thank you to Fr. Brian and the team of wonderful staff who assisted me in planning this event.

Welcome to Marnie Newbound

I am very happy to welcome Marnie Newbound to the St Anthony’s staff. Marnie is around for the next 2 weeks transitioning into her new role as class teacher in 5/6PL. We look forward to working with Marnie for the duration of 2018.

I am very excited to announce the appointment of Ashlee Doyle to the role of Strategic Pedagogical Educational leader in the 5/6 team. Ashlee will transition into the role as Kirsty leaves to have her baby. Anisah Furness will teach the 5/6DO class every Thursday. Anisah is already very familiar with the routines in the senior area.

Farewell to Kirsty Platon

We farewell Kirsty next week and wish her every happiness as she prepares to welcome her new baby with her husband. Kirsty has been a well loved teacher at St Anthony’s for many years and we will miss her. Thank you Kirsty and we look forward to meeting your little person in the coming weeks. Fees and Payments

Thank you to many of our parents for your commitment to paying your school fees and levies. If you have chosen to pay term by term please ensure that you have factored this into your Term budget. Assemblies in Term 2

We warmly welcome all of our parents to our assemblies. Please see the Term dates for your child’s class. In term 2 each class will have the opportunity to lead assembly and present a small celebration of their learning. Stay tuned for a change of day and time to make assembly more accessible to parents.

Congratulations! We congratulate the Perera (Mario 1/2SC) and Sumal (Mehakpreet 1/2KO) families on the births of their baby daughters/sisters!

SCHOOL NEWS Naplan

Please assist us in supporting your child to be ready for 2018 Naplan by reminding them that their hard work and energy that they have applied to their learning since Prep is the best preparation that they need for Naplan. Being calm and feeling ready during Naplan week is important. Our teachers will ensure that they know the structure of the test and will give them the same care and support that they do every day at school. Naplan tips for Parents

1. Encourage your student with their home learning, short sessions of classwork revision during the year. 2. Encourage confidence - Encourage your child to ‘give it a go’ and ‘try their best’, ‘do what you can’; reinforce that your expectations are to do your best. 3. Discuss Feelings/Concerns - Let your child know that feeling anxious is normal; show empathy and listen to their fears, concerns and worries; reassure them of your expectations. 4. Maintaining a caring, positive attitude - Be approachable; encourage interest activities as well as school work; your child needs to feel safe and secure at this anxious time. 5. Prepare your child - Have your child go to bed early, have breakfast, have their water bottle and nutritional lunch prepared; make sure they have their materials ready beforehand; try to keep minimal stress at home; arrive at school on time. 6. Keep perspective - This is just a test in time; just one form of assessment; success is not just determined by a test.

Parent Emails

This week we sent home a slip for you to provide your primary email address. We need these in order to send you the newsletter each fortnight. The newsletter goes out through flexibuzz, through the website and soon it will go out through a bulk email. If you need assistance please see me any time. School Closure Day - No Students

Please note that Friday June 1st will be a school closure day. This means no school for students. After school care will be available if there are enough numbers to run the whole day. If you have a Prep child starting school next year in 2019 please come in and take an enrolment form from the office. If I could have enrolment forms by Friday May 11th please. We have an open day coming up for new families but you are welcome to come along to see us in action. In praise of: Christelle Lim and her 3/4's this week for their outstanding very first Celebration of Learning at Assembly this week. I was so proud of them, they spoke beautifully and shared their achievements confidently. Well done!

Have a wonderful Term 2 everyone. God Bless, Patrika Rowley

SCHOOL NEWS

A Message from Fr. Brian

Happy Easter

I hope you enjoyed your Easter holidays and I hope you continue to enjoy our Easter season where we are reminded that God loves us so much that he gave his Son Jesus into the hands of the world. Like Jesus we will have our good days. We will share days where we to are popular. We will bring healing to the people and to situations. We will share in people’s lives. We will be hurt by others. We will carry many crosses that cause us pain and heart ache, sickness, broken relationship, loss of meaning. We look to Jesus who endured the cross, and God his Father called him through the cross to resurrection and the fullness of new life. May we recognise that God is always with us, bring us New Life, Hope, Joy and Peace. God Bless, Fr. Brian Collins

Learning and Teaching Update

Welcome back to term 2. This term promises to be one that is full of new learnings as well as the opportunity to pause and reflect on the growth we have made since the beginning of the year. While teachers have been busy planning rich and deep learning experiences for our students, we are also always monitoring progress and assessing students as we begin to write the Semester 1 reports. This term our year 3 and 5 students will do the NAPLAN tests in May. While our students will get to do some practice tests before NAPLAN, we remind parents and carers that it is only one of the many assessments we do to measure a child’s growth. Throughout the term, our students will continue to engage deeply with the concept of ‘Problem Solving’ in all areas of the curriculum. Some levels will look at the Commonwealth Games, some will be exploring the problems of the local community and what changes have taken place, some will be looking at sustainability within the school and leadership to drive change. Our focus on building Student Voice will continue this term as we provide opportunities for students to have a say about things that affect them, to make decisions about their learning and its context, and to improve their wellbeing, sense of self and connection to learning. As always, we look forward to working in partnership with families and the community.

Update

Spotlight on:

Foundation

Foundation students have been very

busy getting back into the rhythm of

school. This week we have been

practising 'visualising' what we have

heard. We listened to a story about a

Magic Carpet and then drawn where

it took us. There were lots of

interesting places we visited. You can

see some of these ideas in the

School Foyer. Later, we created a

magic carpet from a variety of items

and had to work out how to make it

go through a maze - without us

touching our magic carpet. There

were lots of great ideas and

creations invented to make it

through the maze. We also went out

to the Community Garden for the

first time this week. We met the

chickens: Bolt, Diamond and

Sparkles. We know how to tell them

apart with the coloured bands and

we fed them. Then we planted some

carrot seeds, which are really tiny,

and toured our lovely garden. What

a great way to start the term.

students are making in Visual Arts. In time

for Anzac Day, these will be displayed at the

front of the school, so look out for this

next week! Also, for a future idea, we're

planning on making a few more bright and

colourful panels to liven up a few of our

spaces, and you'll see invitations from the

teachers for parents and families to help

out and join in the creative fun of painting

these.

RELIGIOUS NEWS Fourth Sunday in Easter

Gospel

Jn 10:11-18

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.

In Jesus’ time shepherds wandered the countryside with

their sheep in search

of pasture and guided

them away from dan-

gers. Jesus, the Good

Shepherd, knows us

well and takes care of

all our needs. He

watches over us at all

times. When we are

lost or confused He

will seek us out until

He finds us. He

guides and protects

us. He knows each

one of us by name

and calls us to follow

Him.

Jesus is full of kindness and love and leads us with patience

and understanding and forgives us when we stray or lose

our way. He loves us so much He was willing to suffer and

die on the cross for us.

In considering Jesus as the Good Shepherd, we look at

what this means for us in our lives. We are called to be

shepherds too. By our Baptism we are called, chosen and

sent to carry on the mission of Jesus. We are entrusted with

the very special role of shepherding too. If we are to follow

Jesus and be united with Him we too need to show the

same qualities as Jesus has shown. Therefore, we need to

ask ourselves ... Who do you care for and how? How do we

come to know others? Do we listen to each other in our

family? Are we prepared to give our time and energy to

our family, friends and those in need? We are called to

guide, encourage and nurture those in our care.

FIRST EUCHARIST

Congratulations to: Sanjay Karthesan and Patrick Murphy who recently received their First Eucharist. Please keep in your prayers the following students who will be receiving their First Eucharist on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of April: Jennifer Huynh, Cassidy Lopez, Anna Nguyen, Vivian Nguyen, Helen Nguyen, Li-Rina Passi and Danielle Scoles.

FAMILY PRAYER God, you bless us with the gift of Jesus who cares

for us as a Good Shepherd. By our Baptism we are

anointed and sent to continue the mission of Jesus.

Guide your people to prayerfully choose a way of

life that best serves You with their gifts. Empower

us by Your Holy Spirit to live dedicated lives as

married and single people, as deacons, priests and

religious. United with Jesus, our Shepherd we are

one with You now and forever. Amen. (NCCV 2005)

Jesus You are the Good Shepherd and we are Your

flock. Help us to know Your voice and always follow

You.

Lord, You are always with us. You care for each

one of us. You are there in times of joy and in times

of sadness. Thank You for being the Good Shep-

herd. May we always follow You. Amen

On Wednesday the students of

St. Anthony’s John Burland.

John Burland writes childrens’ songs

for church. The students have been

familiar with John Burland’s music and

enjoyed an interactive concert with

him.
