The Easter Season is like a smorgasbord spread for us. Now one, now another aspect of the Resurrection feast is sampled Sunday by Sunday.

The readings of the entire Easter season are a mystagogical catechesis for the newly baptised and a reflection on what it means to be baptised for the entire assembly.

The first reading and the gospel are the first and last chapter of the Resurrection story. The fearful disciples behind closed doors become a confident community, living together, owning everything in common and sharing everything. What made the difference? The experience of meeting the risen Jesus.

What difference has the experience of meeting the risen Jesus made to your community?

What have the newly baptised brought to your worship assembly?

Revised Roman MissalHave you had a chance to look at the Archdiocese's 'Revised Roman Missal' website? It's well worth a look. Everything you need to know about the new Mass texts and new musical settings is there, plus lots more. It's featured on the front page of the Archdiocese's website where you just hit the red logo: or go to www.evangelisation.org/missal

The New English Translation of the Roman Missal

+ How will we know the new responses? There will be pew cards produced throughout Australia to assist the people with responses. Some Churches have data projectors that may also assist with the people's responses.

+ Will it sound very different?Yes, it will. Not only will the people's responses change but the prayers said by the priest will also change. The Eucharistic Prayers will sound different. Remember, it is not the original Latin Missal that has changed only the translation. So it will be the same Mass that we have had since Vatican II but it will sound different.

+ Will the readings change? At this stage the readings will remain the same. In a few years time the Lectionary will be revised and the translation of the readings will change then.

+ When will the new translation be introduced at Sunday Masses in Australia? In Australia the new texts for the people's responses will be introduced gradually between Pentecost Sunday 12 June 2011 and November 2011.

+ Will there be many changes? For the people the changes are minor ones. For the priest, however, the changes involve all the Prayers and the Eucharistic Prayers and are quite extensive.

+ How will we sing the parts of the Mass when there are new words?New Mass settings have been written by Australian and international composers. There is also a chant setting in the Missal. The Australian Bishops Conference has recommended six Australian settings of the Mass. Parishes are free to sing the new Mass settings from but the spoken texts will not be used before 12 June.

+ Will Communion of the Sick change?Yes, wherever parts of the Mass are used the words will change. Texts used at Weddings and Funerals will also change.

KAYEM PRAYER GROUP will meet every 1st Wednesday of the month. Next meeting 4th May at 11am. If interested, contact Kathryn 9548 4809.

Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate the beatification Mass in St Peter's Square 1 May. Because no tickets are being handed out for the liturgy, no one really knows how many people to expect. Estimates range from 300,000 to 1.5 million, and crowd control barriers will be set up for blocks around the Vatican.

Immediately after Mass, the faithful can pray before Pope John Paul's unopened casket, which will be set in front of the main altar in St Peter's Basilica. The veneration is expected to continue most of the day.

A large crowd is also expected for the prayer vigil on 30 April at the site of Rome's ancient Circus Maximus racetrack, where Pope Benedict will make a video appearance. Rome church officials have organised that event to underline the strong connection between the Polish pope and the Diocese of Rome.

The French nun whose healing was accepted as the miracle needed for Pope John Paul's beatification will share her story with pilgrims at the prayer vigil. Sister Marie-Simon-Pierre, a member of the Little Sisters of the Catholic Motherhood, had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and believes she was cured in 2005 through the intercession of the late pope.

The morning after the beatification, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving in St. Peter's Square. That liturgy, too, is expected to attract tens of thousands of people.

ABOUT THE BEATIFICATION OF JOHN PAUL II

  • LITURGY OF THE WORDLITURGY OF THE WORD

    First Reading: Acts 2:42-47

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

The whole community remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the brotherhood, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers. The many miracles and signs worked through the apostles made a deep impression on everyone. The faithful all lived together and owned everything in common; they sold their goods and possessions and shared out the proceeds among themselves according to what each one needed. They went as a body to the Temple every day but met in their houses for the breaking of bread; they shared their food gladly and generously; they praised God and were looked up to by everyone. Day by day the Lord added to their community those destined to be saved.

This is the word of the Lord.

    Responsorial Psalm: Ps 117:2-4. 13-15. 22-24

    R. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.

Let the sons of Israel say: ‘His love has no end.’ Let the sons of Aaron say: ‘His love has no end.’ Let those who fear the Lord say: ‘His love has no end.’ R.

I was thrust, thrust down and falling but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song; he was my saviour. There are shouts of joy and victory in the tents of the just. R.

The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord; we rejoice and are glad. R.

    Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9

A reading from the first letter of St Peter

Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy has given us a new birth as his sons, by raising Jesus Christ from the dead, so that we have a sure hope and the promise of an inheritance that can never be spoilt or soiled and never fade away, because it is being kept for you in the heavens. Through your faith, God’s power will guard you until the salvation which had been prepared is revealed at the end of time. This is a cause of great joy for you, even though you may for a short time have to bear being plagued by all sorts of trials; so that,

when Jesus Christ is revealed, your faith will have been tested and proved like gold - only it is more precious than gold, which is corruptible even though it bears testing by fire - and then you will have praise and glory and honour. You did not see him, yet you love him; and still without seeing him, you are already filled with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described, because you believe; and you are sure of the end to which your faith looks forward, that is, the salvation of your souls.

This is the word of the Lord.

    Gospel Acclamation: John 20:29

Alleluia, alleluia! You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me; happy those who have not seen me, but still believe! Alleluia!

    Gospel: John 20:19-31

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you,’ and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, :’Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’ After saying this he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.’ Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord,’ he answered, ‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you,’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me,Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’There were many other signs that Jesus worked and the disciples saw, but they are not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his name.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
