OUR PARISH PRAYER

4th Sunday of Advent

Christmas anticipation is in the air. Family reunions and Christmas gatherings are in full swing. There is the possibility of change as the world glimpses peace. The innate goodness of human life is celebrated as God becomes one of us. But how strange are the ways of our God!

Mary is a Jew, a woman, pregnant, unmarried and poor. Yet of her it is said, 'Blessed are you among women'. Because she received the word of God in a spirit of openness and obedience, God could do great things in her. How strange are the ways of God!

Today's readings combine the major Advent themes - promise, change, renewal, hope - as they look towards Christmas.

We are on the edge looking in. A sense of anticipation is everywhere.

From Break Open the Word

We Wish You A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year!

EVANGELIUM SUMMER SCHOOL25-28 January 2013 * Melbourne

www.evangeliumsummerschool.comSet in the heart of Melbourne, the Evangelium Summer School is an initiative for the Year of Faith. Designed specifically for young people 18-30yo, this Summer School will help you explore some key teachings of the Catholic faith as found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. These are the Accommodation Options for the Evangelium Summer School: Single Room $180 and Twin Share $150 (Single Gender Only). First five receive a discount of $30. Brochure available on notice board. Please see Fr Richard for more information.

With his Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a "Year of Faith" on October 11, 2012 and conclude on November 24, 2013.

October 11, 2012, the first day of the Year of Faith, is the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith. In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that God has opened the door of faith for the early Church. But did you know that God has opened the door of faith for each one us and he invites us to step through the threshold into a deeper relationship with him. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for every Catholic to turn towards Jesus Christ, encounter him in the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and rediscover the Faith and Church. Copies are available at the church doors.

First Reading: Micah 5:1- 4

A reading from the prophet Micah

The Lord says this:You, Bethlehem Ephrathah, the least of the clans of Judah, out of you will be born for methe one who is to rule over Israel;his origin goes back to the distant past,to the days of old.The Lord is therefore going to abandon themtill the time when she who is to give birth gives birth. Then the remnant of his brothers will come backto the sons of Israel. He will stand and feed his flockwith the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his God.They will live secure, for from then on he will extend his powerto the ends of the land.He himself will be peace.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 79:2-3. 15-16. 18-19

R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

O shepherd of Israel, hear us,shine forth from your cherubim throne.O Lord, rouse up your might,O Lord, come to our help. R.

God of hosts, turn again, we implore, look down from heaven and see.Visit this vine and protect it,the vine your right hand has planted. R.

May your hand be on the man you have chosen, the man you have given your strength. And we shall never forsake you again:give us life that we may call upon your name. R.

Second Reading: Hebrews 10:5-10

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews

This is what Christ said, on coming into the world:You who wanted no sacrifice or oblation, prepared a body for me.You took no pleasure in holocausts or sacrifices for sin;then I said,

just as I was commanded in the scroll of the book,‘God, here I am! I am coming to obey your will.’Notice that he says first: You did not want what the Law lays down as the things to be offered, that is: the sacrifices, the oblations, the holocausts and the sacrifices for sin, and you took no pleasure in them; and then he says: Here I am! I am coming to obey your will. He is abolishing the first sort to replace it with the second. And this will was for us to be made holy by the offering of his body made once and for all by Jesus Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: Luke 1:38

Alleluia, alleluia!I am the servant of the Lord:may his will for me be done.Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 1:39-44

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
