NextSTEP-2Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) is developing a Lunar Orbital Platform - Gateway architecture under NASA’s Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships-2 (NextSTEP-2) Habitat Systems program. Our design supports both crewed and autonomous lunar orbit activities and surface operations.
Lunar Orbital Platform - Gateway Highlights: • Significant volume, power & data to support long-duration human habitation • Compatibility with both Space Launch System (SLS) or 5-meter commercial launch vehicles with five-meter fairing provides flexible launch options • Supports missions like lunar sample return to Earth • Utilizes SNC’s Dream Chaser® spacecraft cargo module design to reduce schedule & cost
NextSTEP-2 Ground PrototypeSNC is developing a full-scale ground prototype including major elements of the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway to evaluate how crew members will perform mission tasks in the habitat. Core technologies demonstrated include: • Full-scale Vectran habitat inflation & testing • Air circulation & environmental monitoring • Habitat health monitoring system demonstration • LED interior lighting • Crew equipment mockups for human factors evaluation
NextSTEP-2 Key Design ElementsPower & Propulsion Element (PPE) • Aerojet Rocketdyne 50 kW Solar Electric Propulsion Module featuring four 13 kW Advanced Electric Propulsion System thrusters • Logistics & Control Module, derived from SNC’s Cargo Module used under our Commercial Resupply Services 2 Contract (CRS-2) with NASA, provides avionics, Guidance, Navigation & Control, pressurized volume for cargo delivery & habitable volume • Two PPE included in architecture to increase power and propulsion capabilities, & for redundancy
Extended Logistics & Control Module (ELCM) • Evolved from LCM to increase cargo carrying capabilities • Ports with International Docking System Standard (IDSS) compatible interfaces for visiting vehicles • Airlock for extravehicular activities (EVA)
Large Inflatable Fabric Environment (LIFE) • Inflatable habitat provides significant pressurized volume for long duration human activity • Minimal mass & volume for e�cient packaging in 5-m fairing on commercial launch vehicle • Inner core contains life support systems & provides passage through element

The Lunar Orbital Platform - Gateway concept complements SNC’s extensive space portfolio which includes the Dream Chaser spacecraft. SNC’s work under the NextSTEP-2 architecture leverages technology developed for the Dream Chaser vehicle including proximity operations systems for in-space vehicle docking, environmental control and life support systems, as well as other essential subsystems for on-orbit operation and control.
