Our 2015-2016 school year has come to a close and it was a truly remarkable year for our SS.

Simon & Jude community.

Mercy, Peace and Love was our theme for the year

and it permeated throughout our school. The Pope’s

visit to the United States in September didn’t include

Phoenix, but the enthusiasm of his visit was certainly

felt here at SSJ! The Pope’s Hope Challenge was

sincerely met with numerous wonderful ways to honor

the Pope’s visit which encouraged service to others.

The entire school participated in preparing Pope’s

Hope “blessing bags” for the homeless. Every student

filled a Ziploc bag with water, snacks, and assorted

toiletries for delivery to a person in need. It was a time

of reflection for our students and an excellent way to

put our faith into action and to do our part here at SSJ

to participate in the Pope’s declaration of this church year being the year of mercy.

Fall also brought our youngest students a new climbing structure and soccer nets for their

playground area. The students enjoyed their new space and are looking forward to a few

more items coming soon, including a sport court and the removal of all the sand as well as a

new solid surface installation. This project was the result of our Call to the Heart that is part of

our auction event each year. The auction has raised in excess of $1,000,000 for our school

since its inception and the Call to the Heart is a critical component of the event, with over

$50,000 raised in the past two years. The monies are used for special projects at our school

such as this new primary playground for our wee Irish ones!

Our fundraising efforts are extremely important to our school, and we continue to

be blessed with strong support from our parents who chair our fundraisers. Susan

Larkin and Laura Graves were the chairs of this year’s Jog-a-Thon which

brought in nearly $25,000 and Shelly Chang Williamson and Christy

Farley, our auction chairs, did a fabulous job of celebrating community

and raising $159,000 for this event. We appreciate the dozens of

volunteers who help with our fundraisers and hope to continue to see

new families become involved in the coming year.

In February we added another Honeywell Aerospace

Challenge victory for our school. A strong team of five

talented 7th graders took home to win, making it back to

back wins for the Irish. This challenge is the largest

extracurricular STEM program for grade school and junior

high students in the state. This contest allows fifth through

eighth grade students the opportunity to enhance their

knowledge of space technology through the

development of an International Lunar Base complete

7th Grade S.T.E.M. Field Trip to Tonto Creek

During the second week of November, the 7th

Graders from Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral School

attended Camp Tontozona, which is located in

Payson, AZ. Camp Tontozona is a STEM camp,

which is a camp dedicated to teaching how Sci-

ence, Technology, Engineering, and Math apply to

everyday life. One of the highlights of our trip was

taking a wilderness survival hike! During this hike, we

learned how to make water with plastic bags, how

to make S.O.S. signals, and how to make a warm

shelter out of plastic bags and leaves. Another one

of our amazing activities was being able to watch

the stars in the night sky, in total darkness. Our guide

pointed out all of the different galaxies and we saw

many shooting stars. It was the most beautiful sky

I've ever seen. To wrap up our camp experience,

we saw a bit of snow and sat around a campfire. At

the campfire, everyone ate s'mores and told scary

stories. Overall, it was a great bonding experience

for our class. I can't wait for next year's 7th Graders

to enjoy all of the wonderful experiences offered.

Blessed Mother Teresa will be canonized a Saint in September this year,

and in her honor, our school’s theme is a quote attributed to her.

“I can do things you cannot; you can do things I cannot.

Together we can do great things.”

Please join us for Mass on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., to

commemorate the Canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta.

“Wednesday T-Shirts” with this year’s theme will be available

in the Development Office for $8.00 each.

We are so happy to let you know that our own Lori Irwin Sellers, SSJ

Class of ‘73, is this year’s President of the SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral

Conference of St. Vincent de Paul. Our Cathedral Conference SVdP

Pantry is located on Maryland Avenue, near the school baseball fields,

and is maintained for assisting those in need of food. St. Vincent de

Paul can sometimes assist with travel vouchers or bus transport, as well

as assess requests for rent or utilities assistance.

Lori loves her work with St. Vincent de Paul, and she is such a blessing

to the organization. We would love to encourage you, our SSJ com-

munity, to consider donating to the Pantry. Things they could use are:

Canned goods - fruits, vegetables, beans, soups, tuna

Peanut Butter Toiletries Diapers Rice Bread

Treats for the kids (cookies, cereal bars, etc.) Cereal

As we are getting ready for back-to-school season, SVdP would also

be very grateful for gift cards to Walmart or Target, which could be

used to purchase school supplies/necessities for the clients of SVdP.

God bless you Lori, and your fellow Vincentians, for the good work you

do, and thank you, to the SSJ community, for any help you can give!!

Congratulations SSJ Class of 2016

Remember, no matter where you go, or how far you travel,

you will always have a home at SS. Simon & Jude!

finals on Saturday, February 27th at Wells Fargo Center and SS. Simon & Jude's 7th grade team, Team

Genesis, emerged as the winner of this year's challenge! This is the 5th win for SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral

School. We are the only school to have won this competition more than once which we are very proud

of!

Another wonderful good news story for SSJ was a big win for Emily Nguyen, who was 1

of 5,000 to win a nationwide “Design a Tie” contest sponsored by Southwest Airlines.

Southwest Airlines sponsors an annual nationwide Tie Design Contest in conjunction

with its Adopt-a-Pilot program. The Adopt-a-Pilot program instructs fifth-grade

students in more than 1,500 classes across the country in a 4 week science,

geography, math, writing and aviation-related curriculum. A likeness of Emily’s

winning design was made in to a necktie for over 900 Pilots to wear throughout the

coming year which is indeed an honor for this 6th grader. If you fly Southwest this

summer, please look for Emily’s tie!

Our annual spring play, now in its 6th year, was another smashing success. The

reinstatement of our spring play has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to

showcase their acting skills, or participate behind the scenes as a part of the tech

crew, an integral piece of a successful play. Along with the play, our 2nd annual Fine

Arts Nights, which showcases art projects the students have done throughout the year,

have created a greater awareness for the arts at our school, and given opportunities

for students to shine who have gifts in these areas.

Graduation saw 55 students receive their diplomas and head off to high school. 84% of the graduates will

be attending Catholic high schools, primarily Brophy & Xavier, with 16% attending public schools. We wish

this fine group of young men and women good luck in high school and beyond, and hope that they stay

connected with us and share what will undoubtedly be many successes in the years ahead.

The final phase of our capital campaign for campus improvements continues. This last phase will relocate

our school offices to the front of the campus and provide additional classroom space. The school

administrative offices will be on the ground level with religion, art, foreign language and small group

instruction spaces on the second level. The cost of this project is 2.3 million dollars and to date we have

raised nearly 1.0 million dollars, so are almost at the half way point. Please see pg. 19 of this newsletter for

a snapshot of our progress with the campaign. We hope that all of our school families will help us to the

finish line with this last project for our school. $6 million dollars in improvements over the past six years and

we’re not done yet! We look forward to keeping you posted on the progress of this final phase of

construction.

I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying a restful summer

with your family and friends. Thank you for another

wonderful year at SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral School. It will

be August 10th – and our first day of school – before you

know it!

SSJ Spirit Award: Gail Simpson Caretto, ‘65 The alumni spirit award recognizes the

accomplishments, and commitment of

an individual whose actions and

activities strive to carry on the spirit and

generosity which were a vital part of

the training and spirituality received

here at SS. Simon & Jude School. Gail

Caretto, from the Class of 1965, is this

y e a r ’ s A l u m n i S p i r i t Aw a r d

recipient. She is a friend to everyone;

she is both loyal and caring and has

generously shared her gifts with the SS.

Simon and Jude community for over

half her life. Gail has a gentle spirit, a

deep faith, and unwavering dedication for this

community. When it came time for Gail and her husband Mark

(also a graduate of SSJ!) to send their own children to school

they chose SSJ and just a couple of years ago, their first

grandchild began her journey here at our school and the

Caretto story continues on now for a THIRD generation. Gail

has been a student, a parent, a grandparent, and even an

employee of our school, serving recently as our School Librarian

for a few years. She is also an active IBVM Associate with our

beloved Loreto Sisters.

SSJ Visionary Award: Isabelle Wijangco, ‘06 The Visionary Award acknowledges the

accomplishments, dedication and

leadership of an individual who strives to

share their commitment and passion to

serve with those around them. Our visionary

award recipient this year, Isabelle Wijangco

is from the Class of 2004. She attended

Xavier College Preparatory and then was

off to Stanford University where she

received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in

Biology in 2012. While at Stanford, she

served as Class President for two years,

researched political determinants of health

foreign aid at the Stanford Freeman Spogli

Institute, and worked on global health operations at the Office

of the Surgeon General. After graduating from Stanford, she

served as a Stanford Tom Ford Fellow in Philanthropy at the

United Nations Foundation in New York. There, she worked with

the UN Every Women Every Child movement focused on

strengthening global action around women's and children's

health and worked on global health engagement in the

formation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Isabelle is

dedicated to women’s health and empowerment and she is

very committed to pushing strong public health science and

delivery of quality medical care forward; to that end, she will

begin medical school at Harvard University in the Fall.

SSJ Celebrates Pope Francis’ Visit to the United States

SSJ Participates in the Sunnyslope Collection

Project for Christmas

In one of the most special days of the year

here at SSJ, our school comes together to

donate toiletries to the families in need in

the Sunnyslope area. Each grade is

assigned an item, and students bring in their

donations the morning of the assembly.

Everything from laundry detergent, to

toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo,

diapers & wipes, pillows and blankets are

donated, and when they are all combined,

it's a beautiful witness of love for our

neighbors in need. Special thanks to Greg

and Mary Heiland, SSJ alumni parents, who

head up this worthwhile project, for sharing

this opportunity and for allowing us to show

God's mercy and love!

Jog-a-Thon 11/21/15

Our Jog-a-thon this year

was another great success,

with our students getting

pledges and then jogging

their hearts out to earn

money for our school.

Special thanks to our Jog-a-

Thon Chairs, Susan Larkin

and Laura Graves for their

hard work in making this

day such a success.

Pope Francis’ historic visit to America in September of this year was such a

blessing to all of us as Catholics - and it had a profound affect on the

students of SS. Simon & Jude School.

SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral School happily took part in

the #PopesHopeChallenge, which was suggested by Catholic Charities in

Phoenix, AZ. For the entire week that Pope Francis was in America, SSJ

collected items for "Blessing Bags" - ziploc bags to fill with water bottles,

snacks, toiletries, and even socks! Students also wrote little notes of love

and encouragement to include in the bags. Bright and early the morning

of September 25th, our student council laid out all of the

donations in the cafeteria, and throughout the day, our

students came in and assembled "Blessing Bags". The students

took the bags with them, and when they see someone in

need, at the freeway overpasses or on street corners, they

can hand them a Blessing Bag, thereby spreading love and

hope, just as Pope Francis has asked of us. Thank you so much

to Catholic Charities for challenging all of us to LIVE the

Gospel through the #PopesHopeChallenge. It is our sincere

hope that this will plant a seed in every one of our students to

help those less fortunate throughout their lives.

Adam DeGuire, ‘98: Adam has worked as Rep. Matt Salmon’s

chief of staff since 2013, commuting between Washington,

D.C. and his Mesa, AZ home. He has decided to leave Capitol

Hill and has taken a position to lead campaign operations as a

partner at Axiom Public Affairs. Adam has also worked on

federal and state campaigns across the country, including for

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, two state Republican Party

committees, and the Republican National Committee and

College Republican National Committee.

Robert Lanphear, ‘98: Robert is currently working at the

Goddard Space Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Jonathon Hill, ‘03: Jonathan traveled to Houston this year for

NASA’s “First Exploration Zone Workshop for Human Missions to

the Surface of Mars.” NASA was specifically looking for

locations where we could study some of the major

outstanding science questions about Mars and that meet all

the engineering requirements necessary for a safe landing.

Jonathan proposed a landing site in a region called Noachis

Terra, which is centered around three salt deposits that are

roughly similar to salt flats in the Western United States.

John Heiland, ’07 & Cooper Nagaki, ‘07: Teaching at Brophy

College Prep in connection with the Alumni Service Corps. The

Alumni Service Corps is a post-college service program for

Brophy graduates, and graduates of other Jesuit high schools.

Through their work as Brophy faculty members, ASC volunteers

gain an important experience of Ignatian service. The ASC

volunteers also grow in their understanding through their

community life and regular meetings with members of the

Brophy faculty and the Phoenix Jesuit Community.

Morgan Kelley, ‘08: Morgan has graduated from ASU Barrett

Honors College, and has been selected not only as the 2016

Outstanding Graduate in Chemical Engineering, but the

overall Outstanding Engineering Graduate from ASU’s Ira A.

Fulton School of Engineering. Morgan hopes to pursue a career

in the energy industry, seeking to help create a more

sustainable world by optimizing either energy harvesting or

storage, and hoping to use sustainable energy technologies to

reduce our carbon footprint. Morgan plans to pursue her

doctoral degree in chemical engineering at the University of

Texas at Austin.

Brianne Sanford, ‘08: Graduated this past may from the

University of Mississippi. Brie worked in Catholic Campus

Ministry, Co-founded the Ole Miss Rebels for Life, taught

religious education and was the director of a philanthropy

event for her sorority, Delta Gamma. Brie will be serving this

year as a Catholic missionary with FOCUS (The Fellowship of

Catholic University Students) at the University of Southern

California. Brie is passionate about this mission in bringing the

joy and light of Christ's love to students who are desperately

searching for love, purpose, and most of all Jesus

Christ. Please pray for her and the students she will be working

with on her mission!! The SSJ community is always in her prayers

and heart.

Cate Pharris, ‘09: Cate Pharris is an incoming senior at the

University of Notre Dame majoring in Architecture and minoring

in European Studies. As a part of the classical emphasis of the

Notre Dame architecture program, she spent the 2015/16

academic year studying abroad in Rome and traveling

extensively throughout Europe with her fellow classmates. This

summer she spent two months interning with a small Notre

Dame sponsored team as a research assistant in Dresden,

Germany working on the documentation of various UNESCO

World Heritage sites including the Belvedere Courtyard in the

Vatican and the Taj Mahal. She is excited for her 4th year at

ND and GO IRISH!!!

Kaitlin Coltin, ‘11: Continuing in the Coltin Family Tradition,

Kaitlin is a National Merit Scholar, as were her brothers, Kevin

(’05) and Jeffrey (’07). Kaitlin was the graduation speaker at

Xavier and she was named the AIA (Arizona Interscholastic

Association) Female Scholar-Activity Student of the Year.

Cecilia Granillo, ‘12: Cecilia had the opportunity to travel to

Poland with the Gilbert Mesquite girls volleyball program, to

represent the US at the 2014 FIVB World Championships in

Poland. She and her team of 12 players and three coaches

made the trip in conjunction with the Special Olympics. In the

competition, three Special Olympic athletes were paired up

with three non-disabled partners on the court, a way to make

the action smoother and more enjoyable in a difficult hand-

eye coordination sport. It was a once in a lifetime trip and

opportunity, with memories that will be carried for years to

come.

Nsomma Alilonu, ‘13: Nsomma was awarded the St. Lawrence

Book Award. This is a scholarship awarded to high school

juniors who are nominated by a school registered with their

program. Nsomma was nominated by Xavier for the award

because of her significant commitment to community service,

and was awarded $1,000 dollars for every year she attends St.

Lawrence University as an undergraduate; overall, $4,000. This

award is given to one high school Junior in each school that is

registered with the program.

SSJ Alumni - Where Are We Now? page 10

Did you know that currently 1 out of every 8 students at SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral School is the child of an alumni?

When we speak to prospective families about the school, we always like to brag about our alums! The problem is that

sometimes we don’t always know about the great things that you all do! We’d love to share the accomplishments of our

past students. Prospective parents are much more savvy these days and look for unique differences between our school

and another catholic school. Certainly the longevity of Sr. Raphael and our highly qualified teaching staff, coupled with our

beautiful facilities and our commitment to technology are also reasons why SSJ is such a special place!

Please take a few moments and bring us up to date on engagements, marriages, new babies, graduations, new jobs, or

community service that you are involved with. Send pictures!! We’d love to hear from you and we’d love to share your good news in this

newsletter and with prospective families who are considering sending their children to SSJ. You can email us at [email protected].

Were you a Flinn Scholar? National Merit Scholar? Other prestigious scholarship or athletic scholarship winner? We like to keep

track of these types of accomplishments so PLEASE let us know about yours so we can put you in our database.

At SSJ ... we try harder ... to be the best. Thank you for sharing your best with us!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! WE’D LOVE TO BRAG ABOUT YOU!!

Many people know the Boy Scout motto: “Be prepared.” For more than 50 years, Ss. Simon & Jude’s Troop 148 has prepared boys

to become leaders committed to serving others, all while enjoying great adventures along the way.

Boys are eligible to join Scouts at age 11 or upon entering 6th grade. Most of Troop 148’s scouts are SSJ students, but many others

attend nearby public or charter schools or are home-schooled. One of the greatest aspects of the troop is the cooperation and

friendship among boys of different ages. High school-aged scouts mentor the younger scouts, helping them learn skills and advance

through their leadership ranks while setting an example for the younger boys to emulate.

Scoutmaster Jim Petersen, the father of a young scout and two Eagle Scouts, said the greatest learning occurs during hikes and

backpacking trips. “The outdoors is a classroom that is tough to beat,“ Petersen said. “The older boys lead and the younger boys

learn to lead by following. By facing adversity they learn they can overcome problems that seem impossible. They learn they can

depend on themselves.”

Thus far, Troop 148 has produced 118 Eagle Scouts, and with more than 50 scouts currently in the troop, that number will continue to

grow for many years to come. The journey to Eagle takes five or six years, with most earning this prestigious honor by their sophomore

or junior year. The boys must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and advance through five leadership ranks. Required badges

include First Aid, Environmental Science, Personal Management, Personal Fitness, and Citizenship in the Community, Nation, and

World, all of which help build healthy, well-rounded, and responsible young men. The final requirement is the Eagle Project, through

which the scout must plan, develop and provide leadership to others through a service project that helps a religious institution,

school, community, or non-profit organization. Agencies that have benefited from Troop 148 Eagle Projects include Andre House,

Life Choices Women’s Clinic, Ben Avery Shooting Range, Refugee Resettlement Program, Wise Owl Senior Center and Boyd Ranch in

Wickenburg, and SSJ’s Life House, baseball fields and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Service is truly the heart of Troop 148. On the first Saturday of each month, the scouts help stock the SSJ St. Vincent de Paul pantry.

And each fall and spring, they conduct a “Scouting for Food” drive in a nearby neighborhood, collecting dozens of bags of food to

ensure the pantry remains stocked at all times.

But if you were to ask any scout what they like best about Troop 148, the answer would undoubtedly be adventure. Approximately

six times per school year, the troop backpacks to some of the most beautiful spots in Arizona, including the Grand Canyon,

Havasupai Falls, Aravaipa Canyon, Bullpen Ranch, Horton Creek, Seven Springs, and Picacho Peak. Scouts prepare for larger treks,

including the grueling 24-mile Rim-to-Rim, with Saturday morning hikes up Shaw Butte and North Mountain. Dads, mom and siblings

are always welcome and encouraged to join the fun!

Adventure also comes in the form of off-campus events sprinkled throughout the weekly Tuesday evening meetings. Favorites

include rock climbing, archery, shooting, and laser tag. And the troop is far from dormant during the summer – many boys attend

adventure-filled week-long sessions at Camp Geronimo near Payson, as well as Emerald Bay on Catalina Island.

Perhaps the best time to witness Troop 148 putting their Scout Law into action is during the ever-popular pancake breakfast, joyfully

prepared and served in Smith Hall each March. There, you’ll see that scouts truly are “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous,

kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, clean and reverent!”

It is with a heavy heart that we say “good-bye” to some of our wonderful SSJ staff members.

May God bless them, watch over them, and provide for their every need. We will miss them, one and all!

Sr. Mary Roche has many family

members back in Ireland, and has

decided to retire there. Sr. Mary worked

in the Christian Formation Office, helped

the school with sacrament preparation,

worked with small reading groups, and

was chaplain for the St. Vincent de Paul

Pantry. We will miss her tremendously.

Mrs. Ann Teslevich is retiring after

teaching at SSJ for 21 years. She

started out as our Girls’ PE teacher,

and moved on to the third grade

classroom. We wish her many years

of healthy and happy retirement.

Mrs. Patti Cookman has been driving

the school bus for 22 years at SSJ, and

has taken very good care of our

students while on the road. She is

retiring from bus driving, but you will

probably still see her at daily Mass and

helping out in the second and fifth

grades.

Mrs. Martha Womeldorph just completed

her third year at SSJ, but it feels like she

has been part of the community for

much longer. She is moving to Atlanta

where her husband has taken a new job.

She already has a job offer from a

Catholic school there, and they will be

very blessed to have her.

Mrs. Darbie Vicain has been working at

SSJ for 6½ years as an aide in the Library,

in 1st grade, and as an Advanced Math

teacher. She just completed her

credentials as a secondary level Math

teacher. Congratulations and good luck

to her as she takes a position as an 8th

grade Math teacher at Orangewood

Elementary School.

Mrs. Saundra Rice started as an aide at SSJ

in 2002, and she has been an integral part of

our support personnel ever since. Most

recently, Saundra has headed up our

security team and worked very hard to help

us put together a very detailed and well-

prepared emergency plan for our school.

She has trained us well, and she will be

sorely missed.

Mrs. Cindy Kelledy, Ms. Laurent Heidmann and

Ms. Sarah Barr have all been working part-time as

aides in PreK and in After Care. They have done

a marvelous job preparing some of our youngest

students for success in school here at SSJ. We wish

them all the best of God’s blessings as they

pursue new opportunities.

Through Catholic Education Arizona (CEA) we received over $340,000 in contributions in 2015 for

tuition assistance for our neediest of students. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the hundreds of families

who take the time to redirect their tax dollars! Your decision to give to Catholic Education Arizona

benefits our school by giving students who might otherwise be unable to attend, the chance to

receive a Catholic education.

How does the tax credit work?

Arizona law (ARS 43-1089) allows you to make individual charitable contributions to school tuition

organizations by redirecting your State of Arizona tax liability on a dollar for dollar basis.

How do I know if I can participate?

Any Arizona taxpayer, single or married, with an Arizona tax liability can participate.

How do I know if I have a tax liability?

Everyone pays state income taxes (unless you are taking a loss or don’t have earned income). Even if

you receive a refund you are paying state income taxes. Take a look at your last year’s tax return to

determine how much you pay in state income taxes. This will give you an idea of the amount you can

give this year. Any amount under the current maximums will receive a dollar for dollar state income tax

credit.

What are the current maximums?

You can redirect any portion of your tax liability (what the state collects from you or income taxes) up to

certain maximums:

Single Filer 2016: $1,087 Married Filer 2016: $2,173

There is no possible way I could redirect that much money – does that mean I cannot participate?

You CAN participate! You can redirect ANY portion of your tax liability. Look and see what you can

afford and contribute that amount.

Okay, then – I want to do my part. How do I contribute?

STEP ONE: Make a contribution to Catholic Education Arizona and designate SSJ to receive your

contribution! Write a check or use a credit card or make monthly payments – YOU HAVE CHOICES! Most people contribute online at www.catholiceducationarizona.org

STEP TWO: Catholic Education Arizona will send you a receipt There are two deadlines for your contribution. December 31, 2016 OR April 15, 2017

STEP THREE: You take the credit by indicating the amount you gave on AZ State tax forms 323 and 348 and submit them to the state when you file your return.

Help me decide which deadline to choose. Why would I pick one deadline over the other?

Most people contribute on or about April 15th because they do not want to be without their money for

too long and by that time they know exactly what their tax situation is. It is completely up to you which

deadline you choose. The most important thing is that you participate!

Educate yourself on the tax credit and then participate!!

More information can be found at www.catholiceducationarizona.org.
