PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Celebration of Learning Night What a wonderful community experience our Arts Showcase was last Thursday night! I hope that you enjoyed the presentations of visual arts, digital technologies, performing arts and a hint of language immersion all tied into our BIG question that we have been studying this term throughout our History Inquiry - “Why have some things changed and others stayed the same?” The Arts Showcase was an example of enacting the first element of our school Vision: “To lead students to the understanding that there is genuine value in themselves and every living thing, and for us to empower students in realising their full potential” Thank you to the staff who tirelessly keep contributing to make learning fun and interesting for our students! We are very blessed to have such a committed staff who work so well together as a team, and this was evident in last weeks event. Thank you also to those who have offered feedback on the success of the night. Next week sees another busy week with a Year 3 & 4 Faith night being held in the library on Tuesday night at 7pm (see further details in this edition) and Footy day scheduled for next Friday 21st, along with a Hot dog lunch. Staffing Next week I am taking a week of long service leave to spend some extra time with my family, Mrs Lake will be Acting Principal. Upon returning for term 4, Signora Mazzone will be taking long service leave for two weeks. At present we also have Mrs Corelli and Mrs Angelovski on personal leave. Thank you Mrs Wallis for covering extra hours in the front office. R U OK?

So tomorrow (and not just tomorrow!) as you drop off and pick up at school, don't be afraid to say ‘hi’ to a new or familiar face, and ask how they are… human connections are so important and we should never underestimate the impact that the school yard interactions for adults can have on those around us. God Bless, Anita Kelliher

This week on closing, I draw your attention to tomorrow (13th September) being R U OK? Day “It's a national day of action which aims to prevent suicide by encouraging Australians to connect with someone they care about and help stop little problems turning into big ones.”

EXTRA CURRICULAR NEWS Basketball Program Our Aussie Hoops Basketball program is drawing to a close with the final two sessions. They will be held on Friday this week and on Thursday next week (due to Footy Day on Friday). All students are asked to come prepared, in their sport uniform and with their own basketball, if possible. Thank you and we hope the children have enjoyed the program! Hooptime Basketball - Monday 10th September Our Year 5 / 6 students had a fabulous day at The Rings, Ringwood on Monday for the District Hooptime Basketball competition. This day involved all of our Year 5 / 6 students and we entered seven teams. Our sincere thanks to Rebecca who organised matching uniforms for every team and to our wonderful coaches who each guided their team safely through the day! Thank you from all of us - Sam, Luke, Joseph, Declan, Marcus, Nancy and Frederika! Thanks also to Cheryl for your help and all parents who came to support the children on Monday. It was a wonderful show of collaboration within our school community. Please enjoy the photos and the blog comments from the children!

Hot Shots Tennis On Thursday we will be having trials at lunchtime for our senior Hot Shots tennis teams. Interested Year 5 / 6 students have been asked to bring their racquets (if possible) on this day. The district Hot Shots Tennis event will be held on Monday 15th October (Week 2) at the Nunawading Tennis Club. Many thanks, Helen Kalac and Stephanie D’Astoli - Ss Peter & Paul’s Sport

I really enjoyed Hooptime yesterday because everyone had a chance to participate no matter what their ability. We had amazing and experienced coaches. I am really grateful for Coach T and Miss D’Astoli for building our skills, Mrs Kalac and Mr Lynch for keeping us safe and on schedule and also Mrs Lake for scoring our games. I am very proud of my team and I was very happy when we worked together and showed resilience, courage and persistence. I am really looking forward to next year! Sophia

I really thought that Hooptime was much better this year because we had more experience with coach T in our term 3 basketball focus. I thought all of the Year 5/6s showed all of our dispositions on Monday but everyone especially showed resilience because other teams may have beaten us in finals but we bounced back! A special thanks to all the teachers and coaches that helped especially Mrs Lake who scored for majority of the day and Mrs Kalac who prepared the day wonderfully! Jacob

I think Hooptime was a great idea even though it took ages to prepare, I think it’s really fun! I’m really looking forward to next year and doing it again!. I am really grateful that we had coach T to help us about the basics of basketball to prepare for Hooptime, Mrs Lake for scoring, Mrs Kalac for making it all run smoothly and Miss D’Astoli for organising the teams. Nathan

I thought Hooptime was a blast of fun I enjoyed it so much and I am sure everyone else did too! It was really fun preparing for this event because we had the amazing coach T come and train us. I was really proud of my team, I think we did so well and most importantly showed a lot of resilience and collaboration. But we couldn’t have done it without the teachers who prepared this memorable day for us. The team coaches did an amazing job too. I can’t wait for next year!!! Michelle

FROM THE RE DESK Mark 7:31-37 Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!”(which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Reflection: 1. Have we ignored someone with a disability because we feel uncomfortable around them? 2. Have we extended a hand in friendship to someone who is finding life hard? 3. Have we extended tenderness to someone else? 4. How can we model empathy, in front of our children, to those who are marginalised?
