14th CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

This year the Parish Council donated the Christmas Tree in the church yard,

and the Youth club provided the star on the top of the tree to recognise the

Youth Club’s 20 years since it first began.

Thank you to both groups for always supporting the church’s celebrations.

The Festival itself was a great success again, thank you to everyone who got

the church ready for the trees, decorated a tree, helped to steward the

event, or just turned up to enjoy it. And we learned a new carol at the “Songs

of Christmas Praise” which finished the weekend off with some joyful singing.

The final verse of the new carol is worth a quote (although Christmas may

well be gone when you read this):

There’s a world still needing to hear good news,

More than presents and Christmas food,

May you find the love that God has for you,

MOTHERING SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEA GIFT VOUCHERS

Hathern Parish Church

Mothering Sunday is the 4th Sunday in Lent and is always three weeks before Easter Sunday in the

UK. This year it is on March 11th and traditionally it was the day when children, mainly daughters,

who had gone away to work ‘in service’ were given the day off to return home to visit their

mothers. On the way the daughters would often gather wild flowers to give to their mothers as a

token of love and appreciation. These days it is more usual for both sons and daughters to give

bouquets of flowers and often chocolates too.

If you are wondering what other small token you could give to your Mum this Mothering Sunday,

then maybe Hathern Parish Church might just have the answer in the form of a Gift Voucher. This

voucher will enable your Mum to take afternoon tea in the Church on Saturday 17th March between

2.00pm and 5.00pm.

LETTER FROM THE CLERGY TEAM

I’ve just realised that I’m completely out of generosity. I also want to take back the self-satisfaction

which I picked up recently. Maybe I can swap it for some humility, I hear it wears better. In the New

Year, I’ll throw out the self-indulgence I’ve had for far too long and replace it with some kindness. I

believe it’s much better for you. Oh, and patience. I saw some on a friend recently and it was really

very becoming. While I’m out, I’ll take my sense of humour to be repaired. Ah yes, I must also

remember to pick up some goodness; it’s amazing how quickly you can run out of it. I’ll keep an

eye open for special offers on charity, optimism and love. You can never have too much of these

things.

The turning of the old year to the new is often an opportunity for folk to review, reflect, replace,

restore and to consider the places of personal hope and responsibility as we face the unknown

future. Often our resolve can focus on our bad points which we feel that we ought to work on and

strive to improve: more patience or humility, less weight or less anger. A bit like my shopping list

above.

A website I sometimes use (sacredspace.ie) gave me quite a different perspective a few years

ago, which I now use every few months or so. Rather than focusing on the stuff I’m not so good at

and trying to improve, it suggested this:

“Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life?

By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and

occasions have produced rich fruit. If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those

areas both time and space in the future.”

I commend it to you in these early days of the New Year. Find those things which most give you life

and which are of greatest value. Dare to sit down with God and make a list of those situations

which allow you to flourish. Let the list also be a prayer: a prayer to be our best. If we can define

our lives by what is good and ask God’s help to develop that goodness, then I suspect that our bad

qualities will diminish too. I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to be defined by what is life-

giving and life-changing.

May 2018 be for you a year of deepening character and joy, whatever your responsibilities and

opportunities.

PS And on the subject of change….. A Buddhist monk strode into a Zen pizza restaurant and said,

"Make me one with everything." The proprietor appreciated the Zen humour and, when the monk

paid with £20 note, he put it in the till and closed the drawer.

"Hold on," asked the monk, "where's my change?"

"Ah, change," replied the owner inscrutably, "must come from within." (Here! I do the jokes! Editor)

My neighbour said my lawn looked a bit sad. “Yes” I said “It’s those two lines of bushes that block

out all the sunshine. They look nice, but I’d really like a good lawn, too! I can’t seem to have both”.

“See what you mean” said my neighbour “My lawn really is a bit of a two-hedged sward!”
