2016 Spring & Summer Visitor’s Guide 3

If you’re a new arrival to western North Dakota, chances are decent you overcame some trepidation of its reputation to get this far.

The night before I got on a plane to come here nearly a year ago, I wondered what I was getting into.

Media accounts had me ex-pecting a frozen, ugly, violent place that you’d think people suffer more than they enjoy.

Pretty quickly, though, I re-alized it was an aspersion that was mostly undeserved, and it grows more and more unde-served every day.

In fact, western North Dakota can be quite a delightful place, especially in the spring and summer months, which are the focal point of this special supplement to the Williston Herald.

The most immediate and striking thing you’ll discover in these part is just how fast the days get long. By the first day of spring, daylight stretches to nearly 9 p.m. and by June, it’s light well past 10.

The next thing you’ll notice is an ebullience and verve that washes over the land and its people. If you come from points of south of Williston — and chances are you do — it’s like nothing you ever seen before.

Couple that with perhaps the warmest and mildest winter in recorded history, and western North Dakota is looking at one of the earliest and longest golf

seasons in all the Midwest. In Williston proper, there

are two outstanding golfing options.

The Williston Municipal Golf Course, located at 3401 42nd St. West, near the site of the new high school set to open in the fall, and a number of commer-cial and residential develop-ments, gives you the nuts and bolts of ‘muni.’ With greens fees going for $17 for adults for nine holes with a second go-round for just seven dollars more, it scratches that golfing itch pret-ty well.

For a little more of the coun-try club feel, and a true 18 holes, Eagle Ridge Golf Course, north and east of town at 6401 3rd Ave. East, gives you that and more.

Greens fees there run $62 for 18 holes with a cart, $47 for nine, though before noon, those rates drop to $50 for 18 and $36 for nine.

If you don’t mind a little drive from Williston, the best golfing experience in the area might be The Links of North Dakota, a course which was named the No. 1 course in North Dakota by Golfweek and Golf Digest from 2009 to 2013, and listed as the second most affordable golf course on the magazine’s Top 100 list, according to the course website. Twenty-eight miles from Downtown Williston, The Links of North Dakota boasts no water hazards, but 85 sand traps and sitting on edge of the enormous Lake Sakakawea, it

delivers on that true Scottish links feel.

If you’re looking for some indoor golf, Williston’s got you covered on that front, too. The Williston Area Recreation Center has a luxurious expanse for a virtual golfing experience that allows you to play the likes of Pebble Beach, Augusta Na-tional or St. Andrews without

ever leaving the confines of a large air conditioned room with comfortable couches.

If you want to prove wrong the stereotype of North Dakota as a desolate tundra — and I know you do — there’s no bet-ter way than to golf until you can’t golf anymore, or until the sun goes down — whichever comes first.

The smooth, rolling landscape of western North Dakota belies its potential as a rock climbing destination.

Dakota Walz, from Fargo, has spent years developing rock climbing routes and discovering new destinations in his home state. He firmly believes in the potential of what the region has to offer to residents. “It’s the best rock climbing experience you will find within a couple hours from your front door,” Walz said.

Active in the sport for just over five years, he dedicates 80 to 90 percent of his time to it. His love of climbing began when he took a class at the local YMCA while going to col-lege in Moorehead. From that day forward he was hooked. “I moved away from Fargo five or six years ago,” Walz said. “Since then, I’ve been traveling the country for the sole pur-pose of rock climbing.”

From living out of his car to traveling to Mexico and Puerto Rico, Walz finds that climbing in his home state still brings him great excitement. “North Dakota is known for having nothing but oil and greed at the moment,” Walz said. “To travel the better part of the country, and going to world famous destinations, and just to find out we have something to climb… That makes the experience very special.”

Walz is looking to share that experience with whoever is interested. He stated there are less than ten people develop-ing climbing in the state — but it’s a start. A dedicated few can bring plenty of knowledge to a great amount of people.

To develop a route involves looking at several different aspects and isn’t quite as simple as finding a tall rock. For in-stance, there are different types of climbing. Bouldering does not always require using a harness and ropes. It’s generally done closer to the ground and can involve tackling a prob-lem where the wall or rock face comes out directly overhead. The technique, and the shoes, are different from a strictly vertical climb. “There’s some surprisingly good bouldering out there,” Walz said.

If you desire to get higher, there is indeed a place that

reaches to the sky. Square Butte can reach 80 to 90 feet in some places. Walz mentions that it can be difficult to find, but he ranks it high on his list of good climbs in Western North Dako-ta. “Specifically because it’s the most recently discovered,” Walz said. “It’s got some of the tallest walls and the strongest rock. It’s safe and astonishingly tall.”

Finding these destinations take time and diligence on the behalf of rock climbers like Walz. “North Dakota is one of those states known for being completely developed, but not well documented,” he said.

This is why he is putting together a guide book to be released in the Spring of 2017 which will include information on how to get there, where to camp, and where to buy sup-plies. “When people discover rock climbing in North Dako-

ta,” Walz said.” They won’t have to go on a wild goose chase.” He is hoping to promote the sport in his home state so others can experience the won-der and beauty the area has to offer.

But beauty can also be deadly. While he believes that places like Square Butte can be a saf-er climb than most, there are no guarantees when climbing outdoors. When the weather

warms up, there still certain conditions to be aware of. For Walz, his climbing season generally begins in early April. Following this time of the year, rain can pose a hazard to climbs. “After rains, the water soaks into the stone and makes it very soft,” Walz explains. “You have to be careful about humidity.”

He is aware of the possible dangers, but he doesn’t let that affect him negatively. “As a responsible person, it’s some-thing that’s in the back of your mind, but nothing that gets in the way of the experience,” Walz said.

North Dakota offers plenty of activities for sports and recreation. If you are looking to rock climb in the area and have not done so before, make sure you go with an experi-enced climber or take a class on property safety procedures and equipment.

History comes alive on a daily basis at Fort Union, which fea-tures a number of extravaganzas regularly.

Among them is the Fort Union Rendezvous, which will go on for the 34th straight year in June.

The fort is located at 15550 Highway 1804. Admission to the event is free and includes a variety of living history opportu-nities, complete with re-enactors making it look and feel like 1833 all over again.

Author Jim Hardee said the role playing at Fort Union is so authentic, he considers them more re-creators than re-enac-tors. “They don’t just go out to have fun for a weekend,” he said. “They go out weeks at a time and live that life of the mountain man and survive. They’re hunt-ing and trapping and doing it in a primitive, historically correct manner.”

Each September, the fort winds the clock back to 1832 for the annual Last Bell Tour, a five-station re-enactment of life on the plains in 1832. It takes place as part of the fort’s Living History Weekend.

Participants in the Last Bell Tour experience the wild West as it really was out on the plains.

Fairview BridgeA hidden gem tucked away

There are of course lots of nice places for a picnic in the MonDak, but one of the more unique is the Fairview Lift Bridge and Cartwright Tun-nel. There are a lot of things to recommend this spot, includ-ing baskets for frisbee golf, riverside fishing, picnic tables and old trees to shelter them.

It’s easy with 21st Century eyes to look at this bridge and see a boondoggle. But see as well the grand vision. Great Northern Railroad had conceived a huge new service area in west central North Dakota and the west plains of Montana. They had all the en-gineering down to a science. A tunnel here, a lift bridge there, and 550 miles of track were all that was needed to open up a new and needed service area in the MonDak and, if they’d completed that line, there’d be tracks running straight from Sidney to Watford. A grand vision indeed.

The old Fairview Bridge is lo-cated about 3.5 Miles east of Fairview on Highway 200.

Fireworks are shot off from the Old Fairview Bridge on its 100th birthday back in 2013.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s top of-ficial believes 2016 is a big year for the west-ern North Dakota people’s playground.

This year marks the National Park Ser-vice’s yearlong centennial celebration, and Park Superintendent Wendy Ross said TRNP is anticipating a sizable boost in visitors thanks to both centennial events and North Dakota Tourism’s nationwide marketing push that highlights the park.

Ross’ goal is to capture a larger audience and get visitors to the park who may never have been there, or even heard of it, before.

TRNP’s 2015 attendance figures show it had more than 586,000 counted visitors— an increase of about 26,000 people from 2014. However, Ross said those numbers may not be entirely accurate after park officials dis-covered some of its people counters hadn’t been working for weeks at a time. That glitch has been fixed, she said.

Ross said the park is noticing a small de-mographic shift in who frequents the area.

“We’re just seeing more foreign visitors,” she said. “... We see people who don’t tradi-tionally go to national parks. They’re curious about what it’s all about.”

Ross said she’s looking for opportunities for the park to become relevant to what she calls a “curious generation” beginning to travel more

“The generation that didn’t travel to na-tional parks as children,” she said. “That’s really our opportunity now with all this pro-motion.”

Being ranked as the No. 5 place in the world to see in 2016 by The New York Times may play into that too, she said.

Ross said park officials worked with the Times’ staff for the piece, so they knew it was coming. But they didn’t realize the park would rank so high on the list, or be men-tioned alongside some more exotic locations. “It’s been great positive press,” she said. “You couldn’t ask for anything better than to be on that list.”

Oil and tourismRoss said summer tourism now hops back

into the front seat of North Dakota’s econo-my after low oil prices hurt the state’s energy industry. However, the byproduct of low oil prices is lower gas prices low, which benefits the park with both in-state and out-of-state visitors.

“When that starts decreasing, in terms of

price, tourism comes up and we see that ev-erywhere, in all national parks,” Ross said.

She said the park’s North Unit, about 15 miles south of still-booming Oil Patch hub Watford City -- where the population has in-creased from 1,600 to around 7,000 in the past five years -- has become the park’s “new front door.”

“There are all these countries represented in Watford City that were never there be-fore,” Ross said. “It’s our chance to be rele-vant to a new generation and a new group of people, to think about that.”

There are challenges up north, however. The park is working to replace its North

Unit Visitors Center, which is currently a collection of portable buildings. But a re-placement may be a couple years away from reality, Ross said, because of budgetary con-cerns. Still, she’s trying to make the North Unit more of a priority

The 2015 North Dakota paddle-fishing season was one for the record books.

North Star is the not-for-profit company that runs the paddle-fish-cleaning operation at the Confluence.

The 2014 caviar catch for North Star was considered un-usually high at 2,000 pounds, but this year’s catch was 2,500 pounds.

Paddlefish eat microscopic plants and animals and are among the largest freshwater fish in the world. The fish may

also be the oldest big game ani-mal surviving in North Amer-ica, at 60 to 65 million years, according to fossil remains.

Paddlefish are present in 22 states along the Missouri, 17 of which have sport fisheries.

The only other river in the world with paddlefish is the Yangtze River drainage in Chi-na, where the fish have a more conically shaped paddle, and food habits also differ.

North Dakota’s paddlefish snagging season opens May 1 and is scheduled to continue through the end of the month.

For more information, call North Dakota Game and Fish at (701) 328-6300.
