Page 3: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Apirl 14, 2010 Spring semester was another great season for Studio One. Our teams worked very hard to create a

quality show and a strong marketing campaign. Once again, I am very proud of our students.

Our reporters and producers created exceptional content this semester. All of our shows included

strong interviews, outstanding packages, great photography and detailed weather reports. Strong

content does not happen by accident. It is the result of hard work, meeting deadlines,

investigating every aspect of a story and remaining positive when challenges arise. Bravo to

everyone who produced strong content this season!

The production crew made each show look very professional. Camera angles were creative,

sound was mixed well and when challenges came up, the crew handled them with skill and

professionalism. It was especially fun to see viewer questions integrated into interviews. Live

interviews included questions submitted through the Studio One Facebook page. Bravo to the

production crew!

Promoting and marketing Studio One is an important part of this project. Our marketing team

developed some very creative ways to promote the show. Studio One interns were “regulars” on

XL 93 radio, a successful open house helped recruit candidates for fall semester, and many

booths and events gave students a chance to learn more about our project. This season’s

marketing team developed new and innovative ways of promoting and recruiting. It resulted in a

a successful pool of applicants for fall. Bravo to the marketing team!

To those who are graduating, you now become a member of our alumni family. Remember our

four themes: “Quality, Teamwork Professionalism and Communication.” I hope you keep in

touch. You will be missed!

Sincerely,

Barry S. Brode Director of Television

STUDIO ONE FEATURES PAPER ARTIST, REBILDING LIMBS Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn about a prosthetic technician who makes life easier for others on the next edition of Studio One. It can be a challenge for someone who has lost a limb to adjust. Prosthetic Technician Ken Gaulke builds limbs that help get people return to normal functions. Because every case is unique, the limbs are customizable for each patient. “We design their prosthesis based on their weight, their age, their lifestyle - what their goals are to use the prosthesis, their living conditions, whether they're employed or retired,” explains Certified Prostheist Paul Edman. Gaulke does his best to make others whole and says the rewards from his job fall close to his heart.

Also on the show, while most art is done on paper, some art is just simply paper. One artist has left the ink behind as she creates masterpieces. Artist Wang Hongcuan, who left China and traveled to America, encourages students to explore their artistic side. Hongcuan and her translator Crystal Yang share ancient culture and art with students. Tune into Studio One this week to see how this designer replaces brush strokes with snippets. STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON AIRLINE SAFETY AND TRAFFIC-LIGHT SYNCHRONIZATION

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn about a study that found that 65,000 airplane flights took off over the past six years with insufficient maintenance and how cities are synching traffic lights to save gas and time for commuters on the next edition of Studio One. Millions of people fly on airplanes every day in the United States, and passengers expect that their aircraft is mechanically sound. However, a USA Today investigation has found that over the past six years at least 65,000 airplanes have taken off without proper maintenance. Some customers are concerned about maintenance procedures and what the FAA is doing to correct this problem. “The FAA is very stringent on safety, no matter what angle we are looking at,” says Airport Authority Manager, Rick Audette. Also on the show, driving across town is becoming more enjoyable for the citizens of Grand Forks, N.D. The town is undertaking a new project to synchronize stop lights. Computers which control each intersection are being upgraded in order to keep traffic flowing. There will be several advantages to the citizens of Grand Forks when this project is finished. This project will help keep gas in the car and money in the pocket. “Not only is it saving gas, it’s saving the environment, with fewer emissions that we emit and the time we spend en-route,” says Environmental Manager, Melanie Parvey. STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON THE 2010 CENSUS AND HUMOR IN THE WORKPLACE

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn why the census program can be confusing to college students and how humor can benefit the workplace on the next edition of Studio One. Every ten years, Uncle Sam tries to obtain a head count of everyone in the country. One demographic can find the process confusing. “What college students tend to think is that their address is where their parents live. According to the census, your address at the time is where you’re going to school,” says Grand Forks Public Information Officer Kevin Dean. Find out why their count matters. Also on the show, humor lecturer Sue Thompson will discuss how humor in the workplace can benefit a person’s overall health. Stress levels in the workplace can increase because of layoffs, pay cuts, and closures. Thompson explains that laughter helps lower these stress levels in the body. Lower stress levels can improve morale on the job and also helps to lower blood pressure. Thompson says that it is not necessary to be a comedian to enjoy a good laugh, and also that laughter in the workplace has its limits. Tune in to learn more about this laughing lecturer. STUDIO ONE FEATURES SPRING PLANTING AND A DOG SLED RACE Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how to maintain a growing a garden and about four-legged racers on the next edition of Studio One.

Spring time means planting time for farmers, but it is also time for gardening. Horticulturalist Darlene Shea will discuss the preparation and planning that goes into a blooming garden. She says appropriate levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are needed to nurture plants. However, an even more important item can sometimes be overused. There is a misconception that flowers need a lot of water, but "wetness can actually drown your plant and cause it to die,” said Shea. Tune into Studio One for more tips on maintaining a healthy flower patch.

Also on the show, a dog sledding competition has come to the Red River Valley. The Red River Dog Sled Derby is a 164-mile trek for dogs and mushers. These furry racers are given rest and required checkups after the long journey down the river. Veterinarians examine these athletes for muscle injuries, strains and sprains that the dogs acquire while running. “To have a professional sled dog vet lay their hands on our dogs, feel them and check them over really gives you a sense of security,” said musher Harry Lambirth. Find out more about caring for these cold-weather canines.

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how one woman continues Easter traditions from the old country and how a program designed to help youth is also helping volunteers on the next edition of Studio One. STUDIO ONE FEATURES WRITING WILLS AND DODGEBALL GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn about the importance of writing a will on the next edition of Studio One. Attorney Mark Grainger explains the process of writing a will and says a phone call is usually the first step. After the initial call, ―We send out a questionnaire [to the client] asking what kind of assets they have to get a snapshot of their potential estate,‖ explains Grainger. He advises his clients to make a list of where they want their personal possessions to go and who might care for their children. If an adult dies without a will, their estate is dispersed according to state law. Learn more about preparing this document on the next edition of Studio One. Also on the show, most everyone remembers grade school games. One classic activity dodgeball has resurfaced on one college campus in North Dakota. Students are given the opportunity to play in leagues and take advantage of all this sport has to offer. Some students say this game is way to take a break from the stress that accompanies academia. ―When I have a game after a test I can just throw as hard as I can and forget all about the test,‖ says UND dodgeballer Scott Lepage. STUDIO ONE FEATURES STORIES ON MEDICAL SIMULATORS AND NATIVE AMERICAN TRADITIONS

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how new technologies are helping to train future doctors and the importance of powwows on the next edition of Studio One. New technology is making hands-on experience readily available for medical students. The University of North Dakota Medical School has recently started to train their students on lifelike simulators. Also on the show, dancing is an important part of many cultures. But for Native Americans, a powwow (Wacipi) is more than specific movements. STUDIO ONE FEATURES AN ALASKAN FISHING GUIDE AS A GUEST AND FEMALES FOR FIREARMS

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn about what goes into Alaska deep sea fishing and about one woman who says handling a handgun can boost confidence on the next edition of Studio One. When most people think about reeling in the “big one,” a five-pound walleye might be a dream come true. Tim Niccum would consider a five-pound fish a poor day on the water. Niccum will be on Studio On to talk about his job as a deep sea fishing guide in Alaska. He will talk about the largest fish he ever caught, which weighed in at 235 pounds. “When you reel in the big fish you need to be able to fight. It takes a lot of upper arm strength,” says Niccum. Learn more about the dangers, equipment and preparation that goes into Alaskan deep sea fishing. Also, firing ranges are commonly thought to be a man's domain, but one female student is shooting down that stereotype. Amy Stroh has been visiting the firing range with her dad since she was 10. She says that she has always had an interest in handguns. "It definitely boosts your confidence a little bit, it's really empowering, especially for first time members of the club who haven't shot before. The first-time they hit the target, you can see their faces light up, and that's really fun," explains Stroh. As part of her university's Females for Firearms club, her goal is to get more women out on the firing range. Hear more about this confidence-boosting hobby on the next edition of Studio One. Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Some unusual guests from the Red River Zoo will make an appearance on the show this week. Also, learn the importance of early childhood reading on the next edition of Studio One. Animals are usually found in a zoo, but this week some unique studio guests will be featured. deep sea fishing.

His 1st semester of college was lackluster but he got a second chance by getting involved with “Pay it Forward.” The group is for people who wish to do something other than “the norm” over spring break. Instead of relaxing with family and friends or unwinding in a different state, the Students Today, Leaders Forever group goes to different cities during the break to serve other communities in need.

Show# 409 | Feb 18 | Ryan Carlson | University of North Dakota Aerobatic Team Coach The University of North Dakota Aerobatic Team Coach, Ryan Carlson has led his team of seven experienced aerobatic pilots to two national collegiate aerobatic championships in 2008 and 2009. Analysis: Goals & Strategies The marketing team has developed promotions to help increase awareness of the

internship and program to target audiences. The marketing team had 32 responses to a

survey sent out to all 40 students. The marketing team wanted to know specially what

encouraged applicants to apply for an internship the following in the results.

Why Students applied for an internship: From a friend 14 - 52%

XL 93 Countdown 0 - 0%

Poster 4 - 15%

Watching Studio One 2 - 7%

Dakota Student Ad 2 - 7%

Nomination form 8 - 30%

Classroom presentation 17 - 63%

Table Tent 4 – 15%

Booth 5 - 19%

Events 0 - 0%

Sticker 1 - 4%

Channel 3 &17 2 - 7%

Internship Coordinator 0 - 0%

Teacher Recommendation 7 - 26%

Other 1 - 4%

The marketing team sent out a survey right after the recruitment deadline to get feedback

on events and promotions throughout the semester. There were 23 responses out of the

40 surveys sent to Season 45 students. The marketing team worked to evaluate how their

goals at the beginning of the semester were accomplished through the planned strategies.

Goals, or specific numbers of events and promos determined at the beginning of the

semester are labeled in blue, strategies or the means of reaching these goals planed at the

beginning of the semester are in orange. The marketing also worked to accomplish four

main types of objectives. There are four main categories of events including internal

events, public awareness, recruitment and audience development.

Page 79: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

Type of event Internal What was planned

Goal: 1 Bowling Party event Strategy: The marketing team planned a bowling party after the dress rehearsal to start building team camaraderie right away in the semester.

What happened We had to reschedule because we tried to plan the event so close to the start of semester. So the team rescheduled the event.

Results The graph highlights how interns felt about the success of the blowing event. (1) is poor, (5) excellent. Interns that didn’t attend chose N/A.

Additional Comments: - Many people couldn’t come - About 15 people came to the event which was more than last

semester - It was an easy-going environment that allowed people from

different teams to meet each other and mingle - Good place to meet and bond outside the studio

Next year - Have prizes and food - Encourage all team participation - Maybe have the marketing student leader give a talk about

student involvement opportunities and how important that is for team cohesiveness

- Make something useful (like a bookmark) with event dates on it so interns can plan further in advance

Page 80: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

Type of event Internal What was planned:

Goal: 1 Studio One Picnic and 1 End of Season Party Strategy: Picnic would be when weather got warmer so to keep people excited to get together. The end of season party would be planned after the last show.

What happened: Because college students have a limited budget, the marketing team decided to combine both events and have a End of Season Party Picnic.

Results: The weather was poor so the event was head upstairs in Rm. 211. Jordan Simon brought a large grill to cook brats/hotdogs and food items were assigned two weeks before event (so people didn’t double up on food items). The picnic saved nearly 15 dollars per person, turnout was successful and interns had a chance to mingle and play games.

Next year: Always plan for a back-up meeting place. The picnic was originally scheduled for Lincoln park but it rained all day –the event was held in a last minute location.

Type of event Internal What was planned:

Goal: Have 3 internal marketing mentor days Strategy: Coordinate marketing professionals to come to marketing team meeting after recruitment deadline to engage students and give them some insight into the marketing/public relations industry.

What happened: (2) internal mentor day were planned Results: Studio One Alumni and Executive Director for Vessel Christian

Foundation Michelle Waters spoke about PR. Protech Vice President, Marketing Janet Lampert and Michelle Spizer,

Next year:

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned:

Goal: (1) Community Service - Big Event Strategy: Use this event as a way for teams to mingle while helping out in the community.

What happened: Most of the marketing team was able to make the event but only one person from the programming team came to the event.

Next year: Try to have team leaders stress the importance of volunteer and work and how events, like The Big Event are good resume builders.

Page 81: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goals: put 1000 Studio One stickers on coffee sleeves Strategy: this event was planned the semester before to ensure to get a slot for coffee sleeves

What happened What we did: had stickers on sleeves for a week before recruitment. We need to coordinate this early because this opportunity is filled up quickly – Hope Anderson was the contact – she needs to be contacted early.

Results Someone from another organization called about trying to do this same idea because they liked it

Next year - Maybe to get this for two weeks - It is a cost effective promotion and can be a good reminder to

potential applicants - Visible promotion because students take their coffee with them

across campus

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goals: Two weeks of table tents in all UND dining centers Strategy: Create creative promotions so students will want to read them. Promote internship on one side and promote attending a show on the other.

What happened 6 days of table tents in dining halls Results - Courtney & Bethany were harassed slightly by students when

they went to pick them up - Climbed over peoples food to get the table tents

Next year Avoid picking up table tents during supper

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Design (2) Dakota Student Ads Strategy: Create a simple but effective advertisement that looked good in black and white.

What happened 2 ads on March 2 and March 9 Results Survey feedback:

- Current interns do not read ads in the Dakota Students - Amazing job! - Nomination letters are more effective, students aren’t really

compelled to apply from a DS ad. Next year Take out one ad because they were so expensive. Try to request an

ad over the Sudoku puzzle. Maybe allocate funds toward a facebook ad

Page 82: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Night Life Event Strategy: Create a fun and bright design, invite dorms This Nightlife event was coordinated with the help of Backspin productions. They brought in Rock Band equipment. This event will be a fun and constructive way to promote Studio One to freshman-sophomores on campus.

What happened The team created an 80’s style posters that were hung in the dorms. Flyers were also given to all interns and current interns were encouraged to invite their nominees.

Results - Get promos out to more people if possible and try to have more time before the events/recruitment deadline

- Make more versions and produce a higher quantity of posters - The promotions are good, but most people don't even look at

posters anymore, and if they do they are a lot less memorable. They are good to get the thought in the back of their minds though.

- Make something to put on the canvas stands in the union I feel like I don't see any promotional info about Studio One. I actually found out what it was through my roommate.

- I would say put up more posters, especially near nightlife poster (I always read those).

Next year - Do not host event on the hockey weekend - Schedule the event right away so prime spots are available - Although this event has not been a success, it is free - be more proactive at getting people to the event once they are

there - Move table outside the Loading Dock with food - Move to the crowd and check to see if there are people hanging

out in areas of the union

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goals: create an apply now poster to hang the week of the application deadline Strategy: Have the marketing team develop promotion early in the semester

What happened Posters were developed from the table tent design. Results Several applicants were aware of the internship through posters. Next year Budget for 120 posters for the dorms instead of only 20

Page 83: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goals: make at least 3 interactions with nominees Strategy: #1 – Nominee letter, #2 – phone call in invite to show, #3 – follow up phone call to see in potential applicant has any questions

What happened - The TV Center sent letters to all nominees - The marketing team followed up with a phone call to see if potential

intern had any questions about internship opportunities Results Some people were called multiple times with the same information Next year - Keep a record about what was talked about on nomination card so

you can have an engaging follow-up - Keep all nominee information in a folder with a information card

with date and space to write what nominee talked about - Make sure the call is personal and you can read your audience

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Studio One Open House At this event, faculty at the UND campus and communication students will be invited to tour the facility between 3-5pm on March 2, 2010 Current inters will be encouraged to bring their nominee to check out the studio during school hours This will be a low pressure event where if a student is strapped for time they may be more inclined to come to the studio if they can stay for 20 minutes instead of an hour and a half

What happened We planned a Monday and Tuesday event so more people could come depending on their class schedule

Results We had several people attend the event. No faculty attended the event. Next year This event could have been marketed better. Inform people at the

booths about event and hand out 1/4th sheet flyer. Mention it in classroom presentations. Make sure tour is different than the show-day tour. Have more students help with explaining equipment so we can actually see what happens in the Studio. Try to make the event personal. Try to send out a survey to people that are interested to see what types of positions they are interested in. Plan that people may come early – the food choices should be able to be out on a counter top for a while and easy to have on hand.

Page 84: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: increase social media interaction Strategy: have contests on the Studio One facebook page

What happened Developed facebook comments section into the live show Results - Twitter is pretty much a flop

- Developed a youtube channel -

Next year - Develop a contest to see what fans has the most interesting summer story could be a guest on the program.

- Make sure people tag themselves in promo videos - Try to have the marketing team invite friends to “like” the page

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Have the Memorial Union display case for 2 weeks before recruitment Strategy: develop interesting props that would increase viewers knowledge of the products that Studio One has to offer

What happened Interesting props were not generated Next year Improve display case items include some larger posters or replicas of

awards of make fake studio equipment to draw attention and capture what s1 is all about :) Find the small camera

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Present to 35 classes, have marketing team members present to at least two classes Strategy: try to get into lower level classes with larger class sizes to generate more applicants

What happened Attended: Comm 200 (2 sections) Comm 352 Com 103 (3 sections) Comm 212 (8 sections) Comm 354 Mrkt 201 Comm 303 Com 102 Mrkt 311 Thea 110 Thea 161 (2 sections) Engl 225 Engl 110 (2 sections) Engl 226 (2 sections) Tech 422 Scoc 110 Aero 210 (3 sections) Badm 101 (3 sections) Total: 35

Results 17 students applied because of a classroom presentation Next year Survey feedback:

- Include the recruitment video in the email announcements. And send it to nominees and people who sign up in classrooms

- I think this is the most effective way to advertise our internships. - Although a lot of people don't sign up right away, when they see us

during the semester(s) they need an internship they will be

Page 85: Spring 2010 Season Summary

Season 45 Season Summary Spring 2010

reminded about us. - Keep presentations engaging. - A lot of good information to get people excited and enthusiastic

about joining Studio One. - It’s convenient to have a captive audience but maintain enthusiasm

to keep audience engaged. - Continue to attend large classes filled with lower level students. - Variety in classroom presentations are effective (video/calling on

Studio One-ers/enthusiasm)

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Develop 1 new different promotional item Strategy: Chip Clips were selected

What happened 300 chip clips were purchased under price allotment Results All were given away at booths and at live shows Next year - This was something that most people seemed to need and use

- Since everyone hands out pens it was nice to have something different

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Order at least 200 pens Strategy: Too low of quality of pens are frustrating and can give people a bad impression of the program

What happened 300 pens were ordered under cost allotment Results All were given away within several weeks Next year - Order more than 300 pens and give some pens to local businesses

- plan to sponsor the SCOMM spring banquet (150 pens for this event)

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: 1 weekly press releases Strategy: Press releases will be sent to all markets

What happened - Some reports scripts were not in by the deadline which limited topics to promote.

- Releases were written/sent out on time Results - The press releases from this year were entered into a contest and

would of placed if there were documents indicating that the press releases were published/reprinted.

Next year Diversify from the standard format

What happened 7 booths were set up, promo items were distributed, root beer floats were made and we occasionally used the prize wheel to engage students

Results - most communication classes are not held in O’Kelly due to classroom changes

- many communication classes are now held in Merrifield - Root beer float handouts were a generally a huge success especially

in the afternoons at Merrifield Next year Survey results:

Gamble 15 - 68% Okelly 4 - 18% Merrifield 6 - 27% Memorial Union 21 - 95% Other 3 14%

Type of event Public Awareness What was planned

Goal: Have 4 radio days Strategy: marketing team will help host the Countdown at 9 on XL93 a way to help generate recognition for the show and internship this event is fun and encourages other teams to get involved with the marketing team

What happened The team was invited to come every week. There is a lot of team participation between the teams.

Results - The radio events were fun and we have gotten a lot of feedback from people in the community

- Some interns at the end needed more training on what to talk about since we were past the recruitment deadline

- Have the students marketing director take notes of show content and help the next radio team prepare to pitch upcoming story content

Next year - Continue to invite people on other teams to come on the radio - Give a Studio One promo items to XL93 so when the countdown

caller comes to get their prize they will also get an S1 pizza cutter or chip clips

- Spend more time training team
