Season evaluation The season summary is compiled using the information from what the marketing team had originally planned in this semester’s marketing plan. This information was compared to what was actually done and accomplished this semester. By comparing what we planned to what we accomplished, the team can measure progress. This is also helpful for next season’s marketing team in determining what worked and what didn’t the previous semester. This will help future Studio One marketing teams to have better goals, events and processes and constantly improve from the previous season.

Classroom presentations and booths This season the marketing team presented information about Studio One in 30 classrooms and at six booths around campus. Students who signed up for more information were e-mailed information and an invitation to attend a live show. At some of the booths students were able to spin the prize wheel for a chance to sign up to be part of a raffle for Studio One promotional items. Students who signed up from the prize wheel were invited to attend a live show. A number of these students ended up applying for positions at Studio One.

Seven students applied for internships this season from information they received during the fall 2012 season at booths and classroom presentations. If we include this information it would raise the total number of students who applied from classroom presentations and booths to 16. This would result in an 18% application rate from presentations and booths.

E-News There are three electronic newsletters each semester. They feature studio updates and alumni highlights. Two marketing interns write these pieces.

March 2012 E-News stories Heaven’s highway By: Phillippi Sparks

Studio One alumna, Amber Gray, says that after graduation, her high aspirations lead to a career in the skies.

Amber Gray stayed close to the Midwest while working toward her undergraduate degree. But shortly before commencement, her travel habits changed. For an early graduation gift, she toured Thailand with her closest friends. She says after her trip she wondered, “How can I travel and see more of the world like this?” Soon after returning to the states, something sparked her interest. It was an ad for an international flight attendant position. This University of North Dakota graduate applied and soon after was riding heaven’s highway across the world.

Gray said she’s always been eager for new adventures. “The more things you try, the more you know what you were meant to do,” she explains. In her years at Studio One, Gray dabbled in a little bit of everything. She worked on both the marketing and production side of the project. She says she wanted to understand what she liked and what she was good at. Gray’s pursuit of success pushed her forward to take advantage of every opportunity. So when she saw the chance to grow wings, she took it. “When I saw that ad [for the flight attendant position] I realized I didn’t go searching for it, the job found me,” she says. This was her ticket to see the world. Now, you can find this ambitious alumna working with airline passengers and adding stamps to her passport. However, most everything loved comes with a cost. Her schedule is filled with numerous long distance flights and time changes. She says family and friends are what she yearns for the most. “I miss going to the movies on a Friday night, hanging out with my friends and being able to relax whenever I want,” she explains. Gray has found that not everything in life goes according to plan. She remembers one journey very well. She had over 30 hours of travel time and stopped in three continents, which resulted in a severe case of jet lag. While stopping in Korea, she walked into a men’s bathroom. “I was so exhausted from all the flying, the sign kind of just blurred together,” Gray says. Now she has some useful tips for combating airplane exhaustion. “Drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Also, you should stay up a whole 24 hours before departure to adapt to the time zone difference,” she says.

Gray shows that successful employees in this fast paced field, need to easily adapt to an out-of-the-box workday. She says that her internship experience helped her prepare for an accelerated career. “Studio One has helped me develop…skills on how to handle change,” she explains. Gray says to get as much out of life as you can and take opportunities when they fly your way.

Getting into the green scene By: Jenna Hamann

From gardening products to saving the environment, former Studio One alumna, Kari Gagner, is getting into the green scene.

Fresh out of college, Gagner was hired to write for a Minneapolis area horticulture publication. In addition to writing for print, Gagner grew some new skills in writing for online media. After a couple of years in the cities, Gagner and her husband decided to plant roots in Grand Forks, N.D. where she got a job as an online consultant for the Grand Forks Herald. She put all her previous work experience into use working on

digital media. While working at the newspaper, “[I learned how to use]…Web analytics and create complete marketing campaigns for advertisers,” she explains. Gagner is now developing new skills in her current position at the Energy and Environment Research Center. She is responsible for the development and maintenance of the EERC’s Web sites, including the design, organization and content. She is in charge of promoting the EERC through e-mail marketing campaigns and social media sites. Her job is to take the technical and scientific jargon and make it easy for the average person to understand. Some topics she has had to explain was turning turkey waste, spilled feed and feathers into energy. She also worked to explain how it is possible to create energy from things like forest residues, railroad tie chips, and even coffee plant waste. Another exciting advancement she has been able to be a part of is the promotion of a 100% renewable jet fuel from canola and soybeans. Gagner holds another set of responsibilities at the EERC. She plans events and works with hotels around the country to organize meeting packages for conferences. “I have been here almost three years and am still learning new things each day and I don’t see that changing

anytime soon…It’s safe to say there is never a dull moment!” She has some evergreen insight for fresh college grads. “Go out of your comfort zone a tad. Apply for positions you wouldn’t normally apply for,” she says.

April 2012 E-News stories Calm, cool and Kayati By: Phillippi Sparks

Studio One alumnus Jason Kayati used his college internship experience to land career in a non-stop profession. He is employed at the third largest shopping network, ShopNBC in Eden Prairie, Minn. He says viewers only see the peaceful part of the program. “You really don’t realize how much work is put into these [shows] until you get [hired] in,” he says. He is a floor manager in charge of making sure all studio equipment is in the right place for show time.

This alumnus attributes his production knowledge to Studio One. “I wouldn’t have this job without Studio One…under my belt,” he adds. At Studio One, Kayati directed and helped produce the live show. Kayati’s current role at this world-wide shopping channel involves working in the control room, running on-air graphics and operating the switcher. “Floor manager is a great entry level position, but that’s not where my [story] ends… there is much more I would like to do here [at ShopNBC]! Who knows where it will take me,” he explains. Kayati says he is working on gaining more responsibility within the company. “I’m just absorbing everything around me, learning as much as I can…This is the real world and

there are no more days off,” he adds. Kayati says the most shocking aspect of his position is the amount of behind the scenes work it takes to sell the products at the best prices and have a polished live show. “All the teamwork, communicators, and chaos it takes to put together a calm, cool and collected production.... it’s amazing the magic you can make with television,” he explains. Networking can ease the stress of applying for the first job after college. There were five Studio One

alumni at ShopNBC before Kayati submitted an application. “I was hesitant to apply for ShopNBC at first, but I took the opportunity and it’s taking me far,” Kayati explains. Now, there are six alumni that walk the halls of this shopping studio. He illustrates that work experience and building connections before commencement has its benefits in keeping graduates calm in the job hunt. “Enjoy yourself every day and be a sponge … you can never learn too much.”

Social media is like a party By: Jenna Hamann

“Engaging in a conversation on a social media site should be treated like a conversation at a party,” Studio One alumnus Derek Walters explained to the Studio One marketing team. “At a party, listening to the conversation is essential, but it’s also equally as important to actively engage in it. It is impossible to have a good conversation with anyone if the receiver fails to listen and then not respond. You would never go to a party, shout your news to the crowd and then leave,” Walters says. He explained his career story, seasoned with advice for some challenges with instant communication media.

Walters was an intern at Studio One from 1997-1998. He began his career in television and after a few years moved into a position at the Energy & Environmental Research Center in Grand Forks, N.D. He started working at the EERC in media relations. Now, 11 years later, he is the Manager, Marketing, Communications, and Outreach at the EERC.

This alumnus explained documenting published media coverage for a group or organization is vital in seeing the effectiveness of events, promotion and advertising. Web analytics and services that search for published online content are also important tools for measuring goals.

Advances in technology have pros and cons. Instant communication is possible, but Walters explains that it’s important to double check before sending out the latest news. He adds that today everything is recorded. He stresses one pivotal aspect when developing content. “No mistakes,” he says. The communication field is a place where even the slightest mistake can ruin the credibility of an organization. This manager of connections emphasizes the importance of perfecting writing skills, learning AP style and how every EERC email blast, tweet and news release receives several edits before being released to the public.

Social media is like a party. It is good practice to stay engaged while maintaining poise and professionalism. Marketers can help survey and develop content while editors moderate the conversation to prevent unnecessary and embarrassing mistakes.

May 2012 E-News stories Valuable Resources By: Phillippi Sparks

Oil was once a cheap commodity. Today, “Texas Tea” is the highly valued liquid that keeps the world moving. Studio One alumna Katie Haarsager works with a company that specializes in transporting this product. She is the Community Relations Advisor for Enbridge’s North Dakota offices.

They deliver oil in its 970 miles [and counting] of pipeline system. The company says that concept helps decrease the use of liquid gold carrying truck traffic. “You cannot just work hard, you have to work smart,” says Haarsager. In this role,

Haarsager uses her talents to present the company’s objective to numerous people while keeping business flowing.

At first, Haarsager says she was nervous coming into a major communications role at Enbridge. She points out that as a new graduate, students should never feel under qualified for a certain task or position. “This job has allowed me to grow personally and professionally,” she says.

She says that past lessons helped prepare her for her future career. During her time at Studio One, she worked on the marketing team as a Web designer and audience development team member. She also worked in the green room. “My position on the marketing team enabled me to become more comfortable doing classroom presentations and sharing information with people…conversations with guests in the green room helped spark confidence with my public speaking as well.” She often is required to speak in front of large audiences in her current position. “I’m still pulling little tips and tricks that I learned while at Studio One for my presentations.” Although television and the oil industry are very different, Haarsager says they share some similar values. She notes that Studio One and Enbridge focus on fostering a professional and positive workplace.

Haarsager says her past experiences were important in landing her current job. She encourages others to always take opportunities and look for new ones and that in the business world, it's not what you know, it's who you know. This alumna leaves a tip for new graduates. “Connections are important. It’s a small world so get to know everyone in it.” Networking and experience worked for landing this alumna a career in the industry.

Numbers are this girl’s best friend By: Jenna Hamann Check it once, check it twice, number don’t lie. Studio One alumna, Chelsey Moe, works closely with numbers as a Senior External Auditor at the global company, Deloitte.

“I perform audits in accordance with specific laws or rules on the financial statements of a company, government entity, [and] other legal entity,” she says. Deloitte acts as a financial advisor. It works with client’s toughest problems in audit, financial advisory, tax and consulting. As an external auditor in Deloitte’s Minneapolis, Minn. office, Moe’s number crunching time peaks from January through April. “We end up spending some late nights and eating a lot of candy,” she says.

Moe was an intern at Studio One for two semesters, both of which she was a member of the marketing team as a greeter and tour guide. “[From Studio One] I took away the basic skills of learning to communicate with external contacts as well as your internal team to stay on top of projects,” she says. While in school at the University of North Dakota, Moe attended a career fair on campus. “I interviewed through career services…from there I entered into a summer program with Deloitte and ultimately got a job offer,” she says.

Moe’s favorite part of her position is “… the teams I work on- a lot of my coworkers have become very close friends,” she says. It’s also important to be flexible. “We have various travel schedules and client demands that need to be met,” she says. Moe’s frequent flyer miles are accumulated from her trips to California or North Dakota. Traveling isn’t always so glamorous but Moe and her co-workers try to find all the positives. They took advantage of the increase in

ticket prices to and from California by “Go[ing] to Hawaii for the weekend instead!” she says.

New job positions can be difficult. When Moe started her job at Deloitte, she needed to become skilled at being “…unbiased and independent,” when giving reports of financial information to its clients. Eventually, she became comfortable in her new role. “It’s a wonderful thing when you are placed into a team that takes the time to ensure that you have the resources you need and your questions answered so you can grow in your position,” she says. It all adds up to a positive career.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON A FLIGHT NURSE AND WINNING

COACHES

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Hear what it is like to help in a lifesaving mission and what sets

some of the most successful college coaches apart from the rest on the next edition of Studio

One.

Many say saving someone’s life is an adrenaline rush. Ben Dorman, Flight Nurse for Valley Med

Flight, experiences this type of natural high every day. He has been a flight nurse for 15 years

and recently took his career to new heights. He started Valley Med Flight and is the owner,

president, and chief flight nurse. “I was always looking for more and more challenges. A job that

allowed me to reach the ultimate level you can get as a nurse and have the most [independence]

is what I wanted,” Dorman says. Watch Studio One to hear how he impacts critical care patients

and their families’ lives.

The idea is simple. Win more games than you lose. In a competitive industry, college coaches

find a way to get ahead. “You have a long-term picture and plan but you focus on getting things

done the right way on a daily basis,” says Dave Hakstol, head coach of the University of North

Dakota Men’s Hockey Team. Many have tried and failed to become consistent champions.

Learn the recipe for success from two seasoned collegiate mentors on this week’s show.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES SEGMENTS ON SAFE KIDS COORDINATOR AND HONOR GUARD DRILL TEAM

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Keeping kids safe is usually on a parent’s mind. A safe kids coordinator will talk about preventing unintentional injuries. Also, learn about the enjoyment that one branch of the U.S. Air Force gets when performing a drill on the next edition of Studio One. Accidental injuries cover a wide range of issues, including: motor vehicle crashes, drowning, falls, fires, burns, ATV accidents and farm injuries. Carma Hanson, Altru’s Safe Kids Coordinator, is spreading awareness about preventable harm. “Lack of supervision and failure to use safety devices that would prevent them from occurring... It’s not about fault, but about how we can prevent [injury] in the first place. The steps are really simple and cost effective, but society hasn’t shifted to that mentality yet,” Hanson says. Tune in to learn about keeping youngsters out of harm’s way. The Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team is a well-trained assembly that combines military skills and performance. They are a tight group who depend on each other. “I could call these guys in the middle of the night and ask them for something…they’re like my brothers,” says Airman First Class, Billy Degraffenreid, Jr. Learn how these airmen use the love of country and specialized skills to entertain. STUDIO ONE FEATURES INFORMATION ON MALE TEACHERS AND INTERNET MEDIA

SHARING Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. —The number of male elementary school teachers is declining. Learn how this could impact a child’s education. Also, one innovation allows people to legally share Internet media with a click of a button. Find out how on the next edition of Studio One. Many think of certain professions such as nurses and flight attendants as predominately female occupations. Statistics show elementary teachers are primarily women. “…Most of the teachers are female, so when they [students] come and have a male teacher, it’s something new,” says Paul Letvin an elementary school music teacher. Young men may not even consider teaching younger students when choosing a career. Learn what some are doing to increase interest among men in elementary education. One man has designed a way to legally share media. Eric E. Johnson, an associate professor at the University of North Dakota School of Law, developed an Internet sharing tool, Konomark. According to The Konomark Project Web site, “The konomark is a symbol – a circle with a pineapple in it – that lets visitors to your Web site know that you are generally willing to share your copyrighted content…The konomark is an invitation to e-mail you and ask you for permission.” Konomark uses the symbol of a pineapple because in Hawaiian, the word “kono” means to invite. This unique symbol allows users to share their content and track who uses it. “With konomark it is kind of like having pen pals. You can see where your works are going and what it is being used for,” Johnson explains. Tune into Studio One this week to hear about this new sharing tool. STUDIO ONE FEATURES MINIATURE FLOWER PATCHES AND A BLUES MUSICIAN

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how one woman makes her workplace look fresh year round. Also, one man continues to share his love for blues music through an organization that helps to resurrect soulful songs on the next edition of Studio One. Some consider one insurance office as a “whimsical fairy land.” Insurance broker and gardener Debra Hopkins brings her personal touch to the workplace. “Everything was cold and professional. I gradually brought in personal things to make it feel like my sacred place,” she adds. Hopkins has used her love of gardening to brighten her workday. “I can’t walk in [my office] without smiling; my heart just sings,” she says. Hopkins combines artwork and nature to create miniature gardens. “I make it spring in here all winter long. It’s a nice thing to come in from the outside.” Hopkins will demonstrate how she creates petite flower patches. Blues music generally tells the story of heartbreak and sorrow but for one man, playing the blues has a happy ending. “If you get ready to start your car in the morning and it won’t start and you have to be to work on time, then you really got the blues. Everybody gets the blues sometimes,” says Sammie Moore, a blues musician. Singing about hard times has taken Moore many places and in front of countless audiences. However, this genre is seeing less stage time. “Every 10 to 20 years, music changes. The whole style changes… some [blues] musicians have to stop making a living that way,” he says. Many melancholy artists are now looking for a way to make ends meet. The Music Maker Relief Foundation has made an impact on struggling performers by helping them with recording contracts, bookings and living expenses. Tune in to Studio One this week to learn about how dark tunes can have a bright future. STUDIO ONE HIGHLIGHTS MOVIE THEATER CHANGES AND A NASA

RESEARCHER

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how the digital age is changing movie theaters and why a

research jet is improving the future of climate predictions on the next edition of Studio One.

Many people enjoy going to the movies. However, advances in silver screen technology are

making it hard for some communities to keep up with changes. In the past, movies have been

stored on a mile-long reel of film, then projected to audiences. The National Association of

Theatre Owners says the future of motion pictures will exist in an all-digital format by 2013.

Find out how small town movie theaters are affected by this change.

Also on the show, one man shares how he is working to improve accuracy of weather forecasts.

Tony Grainger, an Atmospheric Sciences professor at the University of North Dakota, will talk

about his research with NASA. Grainger was a crew member and flight scientist on the Cessna

Citation II Research Jet. He says he works to, “get cloud droplet size and liquid water content.”

This information allows NASA to gain insight about precipitation measurements. Tune in to

learn how a highly trained team collects and evaluates rain and snow data.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES PULITZER PRIZE WINNERS AND AN ONLINE

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how two writers used investigative journalism to uncover

corrupt police officers and how one local newspaper sees the digital age as a new opportunity on

the next edition of Studio One.

Many look to police to protect and serve. Two women found out what happens when law

enforcement is tainted. Barbara Laker and Wendy Ruderman, journalists for the Philadelphia

Daily News, investigated suspicious search warrants and drug busts. What the women found was

scandalous. Officers were committing sexual crimes, tampering with surveillance cameras and

filing fake warrants. Find out how their persistent journalistic efforts led to justice and a Pulitzer

Prize on this week’s show.

Also, changes in technology are impacting the look of the traditional newspaper. Most papers

have moved to an online format. “This isn’t saying that people are just not reading the news

anymore. While some people may not be reading the newspaper, they are going to the Internet

for their news,” says Mike Brue, Grand Forks Herald online editor. Tune into the next edition

of Studio One to find out how moving online can provide a new direction for local newspapers.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES PORTRAITS IN COURAGE RECIPIENT AND STUDENT

INVESTOR

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Find out how one U.S. soldier received a prestigious award from the

Air Force and how a young investor gains real-world experience by leading a student business on

the next edition of Studio One.

Cliff Monroe, Master Sargent in the United States Air Force, is a structural craftsman who

repairs bridges and helps build schools. He has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. In his

most recent deployment, combat skills saved his and fellow comrades’ lives and he earned the

rare Portraits in Courage award. “Life is precious. Take advantage of it,” says Monroe. Learn

how he was one of just 18 soldiers to receive this honor in the history of the Air Force.

Also, many hope to strike it rich by investing in the market. One group of university students is

learning the venture trade by deciding which new businesses would be profitable. This group

then uses their own cash to invest. “Companies don’t treat us different, because we are students.

We are investing real money we are treated with the same level of respect, I think, because of

that reason,” says Alex Naastad, President of the Dakota Venture Group. This is the first

completely student run venture capital fund in the United States. “There are very few groups

where students get to make the decisions from beginning to end like we do at DVG,” she adds.

Naastad will share how this unique team works to turn a profit.

STUDIO ONE FEATURES VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS AND A NORWEGIAN KING’S GUARD

Award-winning news show airs on Channel 3 in Grand Forks GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Learn how one man turned his visual impairment into an opportunity to become a mentor for those faced with similar challenges. Also, one man will talk about about guarding the King of Norway, on the next edition of Studio One. A virus left Ken Dockter partially blind. The School for the Blind coordinator uses his experience to help others who are visually impaired. Dockter who teaches daily living skills to students, develops strategies to help students who are partially or fully blind learn how to live on their own. “When the parents call and say ‘my son or daughter made a meal for us with no help,’ that is the most rewarding…This school is a great opportunity for kids to [meet] other kids very similar to themselves and form great friendships,” he says. Hear how Dockter overcame his obstacles to help others overcome theirs on this week’s show. Many are familiar with the image of stoic London soldiers standing guard at Buckingham Palace. However, many other nations practice the tradition of noble sentries. Bjorn Nybru was a member of the King’s Guard of Norway. This select group protects the residences of the king and his family. These specially trained soldiers are expected to remain serious even as tourists attempt to distract them. “There are a lot of pictures of [royal guards] in different photo albums around the world,” he says.
