HAROLD LIEBMAN BY PEGGY O'BRIEN
Imagination and movement are '1:
two key words which bring I tc>ge,th.er the many arts of versatile, Harold Liebman whose exhibit opened last weekend in the Delmar Public Library.
As a dancer, he and his wife, Lolita, have performed their famous Snake Dance all over the world: in London, in the Revue Folies Bergere in Paris, in the Latin Quarter and The Waldorf Astoria in New York, the supper clubs of Les Vegas, and throughout South America. More recently, they have been on the TV shows of Milton Berle, Ken Murray, and Ed Sullivan to mention a few.
Mr. Liebman said that in creating this dance, he first worked it out with drawings, as the fight between Man and Woman, the woman, as the snake, and the man, as the snake charmer. Then, it was developed into the movement,

which remained vital and exciting through over 1000 performances over a period of 25 years.
"Painting is my profession, dancing my hobby, " said Harold Liebman in a recent interview in his studio. "I danced to get the money to pay for my tubes and canvasses. " ,
The work at the Delmar Li-brary gives some idea of the versatility of a man to whom every material holds possibilities for creative design.. There are watercolors and oilso Besides that, he has developed beautiful effects with copper on wax and ceramic and plastic on wax with stones in dramatic designs in cement where he let "nature and the shape of the stones lead him. ·~ He works in ceramics and often uses a method of folding a flattened piece of clay into shapes, which carry through his constant love of movement.,
Imagination allows him to search constantly and to find amazing effects. Mr. Liebman's famous "TinCanMarionettes'' are also represented in the Library. In loOking at his collection, one

sees a great deal of kitchen material and realizes why his wife trembles every time he comes into the kitchen with a gleam in his eye. A coffee pot for a head with the spout as a nose; half-opened sardine cans for feet; spatulas for fins of a fish give a slight ide a of the imaginative capabilities of Mr. Uebman. The effect is singularly good. These marionettes have been shown in a number of plays many, many times and they have been made into a movie. They will have another work-out in East Greenbush next month.
Movement is always in Mr. Liebman's work; in the effect of his paint brush, in the stones on cement that are fashioned for fireplaces, in his murals, one of which is the decor in Herbert's Restaurant, on Madison Avenue in Albany, even in the mosaic designs of his tables. He says it is the love of movement that brings together for him all the variety of art forms, in which he is constantly im-mersed.
The Liebmans live in Hannacroix, just south of Ravena, on a farm whose out-buildings have proven themselves effective for his arts and for his classes, which are attended by students from considerable distances away. Mrs. Liebman, whose training is Russian Ballet, teaches her own method with ballet as a base and a nod to Modern Dance movements in a lovely studio made from the food storage building, built with thick walls which keep it warm in winter and cold in summer.
Mr. Liebmap. has shown his paintings at the Nathaniel Academy, the American Artists Professional League and has had shows in Miami, Los Angeles, and in our own Albany Institute of History and, Art.

This is the busiest month! There are more things going on -worthwhile too, drives to sp-.:msor, programs to attend, and foremost is the Lenten period. There are approximately forty-six days, between Ash Wednesday and Easter. During these days, the Church is challenging us with opportunities to increase our spiritual resources.. What shall we do to observe Lent? To make this Lent a new time of growth and discernment.
Surely the churches in our commwtity offer many varied programs of interest and worship .. Let us all make the most of this privilege.
