Bahrain committed to remain part of ‘global battle against terrorism’

Kingdom’s Bahrain envoy to US stresses the importance of global security co-operation

• The ambassador talked about the diversity of the security challenges posed by some terrorist and extremist groups that were supported by Iranian regime.

• He added that the operations of terrorist groups have witnessed a qualitative shift involving the use of drones.

Washington

Ambassador of the King-dom to the United States of America, Shaikh Ab-

dullah bin Rashed Al Khalifa, gave a lecture on the security challenges facing the Kingdom at the John F Kennedy School

of Government at Harvard Uni-versity, which is considered the most prominent intellectual cen-tre in the world.

The ambassador stressed the importance of security co-oper-ation between the Kingdom and its international allies, led by the United States of America, to tackle the scourge of terrorism

and extremism on national, re-gional and international levels, and that such security co-oper-ation is no less important than defence co-operation between countries.

As for the security challenges facing the Kingdom, the ambas-sador talked about the diversity of the security challenges posed

by some terrorist and extremist groups that were trained and supported by money and equip-ment by the Iranian regime, as evidenced by the quality of the confiscated weapons as well as the methods followed by such groups, as it is sometimes iden-tical to the same terrorist organ-isations supported by the Iranian regime in the region.

He explained that the attacks carried out by such terrorist and extremist groups, ranging from the use of Molotov cocktails, im-provised explosive devices which is considered more complex,

and the Kingdom witnessed the worst terrorist attack in its histo-ry using such explosive devices in 2014, which led to the death of four of martyrs of duty.

He added that the operations of such terrorist groups have wit-nessed a qualitative shift involv-ing the use of drones, such as in the process of storming a prison in the southern area, which led to the death of one policeman and the escape of ten terrorists.

In conclusion, the ambassa-dor affirmed that the reform approach of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has been a safety valve for the Bah-raini society against extremism and terrorism, and in light of this approach, the Ministry of Interi-or adopted 90 initiatives within the national plan to promote Na-tionalism and the consolidation of the values of citizenship in order to face foreign attempts exotic to the Kingdom, which seeks to consecrate sectarianism by preserving the inherent val-ues of Bahraini society.

Bahraini convicts in Qatar spy case lose their appeals

The pair have now exhausted all legal options and will serve their prison terms

• Court files show that a total of undeclared BD12,500 was found in the suspects’ possession upon their arrival to the Kingdom.

• A judicial permission was previously issued to record telephone calls between the suspects, which confirmed the results of the investigations.

TDT | Manama

The Cassation Court, Bah-rain’s highest court, up-held the verdicts previ-

ously issued against two Bahraini

men who were found guilty of re-ceiving funds from a Qatari min-ister to disrupt the parliamentary elections here last November.

With this, the pair exhaust-ed all the judicial options to avoid jail and now will serve their pris-on terms.

The first defendant was earlier ordered to be imprisoned to five years and was fined BD2,000, while the second defendant was sentenced to three years of im-prisonment and fined BD1,000.

As reported earlier by Trib-une, the first defendant was a candidate in the parliamentary elections here.

Court files show that a total of undeclared BD12,500 was found in the suspects’ possession upon their arrival to the Kingdom, coming from Qatar through Ku-wait last October.

Investigations revealed that both suspects often received

money from the former Qatari In-terior Minister Abdullah bin Khalid Al Thani through their bank accounts or by frequently travelling to Qatar to receive the cash in person, a similar scenario to the trip they have made when they were arrested.

It was also shown in the court that the first defendant received sums of money from the Qatari official to support his electoral campaign for the 2018

parliamentary elections. The man received the mon-

ey with the aim of winning the polls and serve the malicious Qa-tari agenda to harm the King-dom’s interests by affecting the work of the legislative institu-tions in Bahrain from inside the parliament.

Both defendants were arrested at Bahrain International Airport, where the Customs Department employees searched them and found the money in their pos-session.

There, the first defendant de-nied that he was attempting to hide the BD12,000 that was found in his possession, claiming that he “forgot” to declare it.

He also denied that he received the money from the Qatari of-ficial to support his electoral campaign, claiming that it was given to him “to fix rainwater insolation equipment”.

A judicial permission was previously issued to record telephone calls between the suspects, which confirmed the results of the investigations and led to their arrest.

Further probe and interroga-tion of the suspects also showed that both of them, in the period between the years 2013-2018, re-ceived a total of BD235,804 from the same Qatari official, who’s listed in an international terror-ism list issued by the Anti-Terror Arab Quartet, which consists of Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Both suspects were found guilty for the charges of exchang-ing intelligence information with someone working for a foreign country to undermine the na-tional interests, in addition to illegally receiving money with-out claiming it at the Customs Department.

235,804Bahraini dinars

were received by the defendants in bribes to exchange information.

Man jailed for sheltering fugitiveTDT | Manama

A young Bahraini man ac-cused of hiding his fu-

The fugitive, 26, implicat-ed his cousin in a case after he hid in their house, although he was convicted in four se-curity cases and had to serve 26.5 years in prison, accord-ing to court files.

The pair are said to have been friends, but the 26-year-old man was involved in an-ti-government activities and was an outlaw.

He resorted to his cousin,

aged 20, to give him shelter as cops were in the hunt for him, according to Prosecutors.

“And he did it, offering him food and beverages as well as helping him in his move-ments.”

However, a police tip-off revealed his wrongdoing and cops immediately headed to the house and arrested both of them.

“He was only sleeping in our home at night. In the morning, I didn’t know any-thing about him,” the 20-year-old told prosecutors.

“The fugitive was charged with escaping justice, while his co-defendant was accused on the grounds of sheltering him.”

99 per cent of individuals in Kingdom use Internet: TRA

The Kingdom leads the global ranking of the percentage of Internet users

• The results of the survey showed that 16pc of the households surveyed have a fixed telephone line.

• 85pc of respondents expressed their satisfaction with telecommunications services in Bahrain.

TDT | Manama

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the Kingdom of

Bahrain has recently published its latest Telecommunications Services Residential Market Survey report.

According to the results of the survey, Internet users have reached 99 per cent, which is a clear indication of the increas-ing affordability of Internet ser-vices in Bahrain.

The Kingdom leads the global ranking of the percentage of In-ternet users, according to data released by the International Telecommunication Union.

The results of the survey show that Internet applica-tions represent most Internet activities such as social media applications. For instance, 99pc of respondents said they use WhatsApp and YouTube, 95pc

use Instagram and Facebook and 90pc use Snapchat.

With regard to mobile te-lephony services, almost all re-spondents have a mobile phone service. However, the survey shows that the percentage of us-ers having two or more mobile SIM cards is in decline, reaching 16pc in 2018 compared to 38pc in 2017.

This reflects the develop-ments in mobile telephony packages such as the introduc-tion of new and comprehensive

packages as well as the signifi-cantly increasing use of mobile

data. The survey also indicates that

the main reason put forward by respondents for having more than one SIM card was to have separate SIMs for business and personal use.

As for the fixed line service, the results of the survey showed that 16pc of the households sur-veyed have a fixed telephone line due to the high dependence on mobile phone services.

Regarding telecommunica-tions services users’ satisfac-

tion, the survey results showed that 85pc of respondents ex-pressed their satisfaction with telecommunications services in Bahrain.

Moreover, users’ proposals were focused on lowering prices and increasing the quality of services.

“The results of this survey show significant developments in the nature by which telecom-munications services are used and required by users,” said Act-ing General Director Sh. Nasser bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.

“The high number of Internet users in Bahrain and the volume of internet usage that require high speeds and large amounts of data, in addition to the desire of users to obtain services at lower prices and better quality, all illustrate the importance of the deployment of the Nation-al Broadband Network using fibre-optic cables, which was achieved through the Batelco’s separation process.

“The network will enable the provision of high-speed broad-band services to individual and business users,” Shaikh Nasser added.

The survey included a sample of 1,548 individuals in the age group of 15 years and above, who were surveyed on the availability and use of various telecommunication services as well as their satisfaction with telecommunication and online services.

Bahrain Television has made the wish of a young cancer patient to appear

live on TV come true.A group of young cancer pa-

tients from Deena Kanoo mi-cro-school in Salmaniya Med-ical Complex were visiting the studios of the TV channel in Isa Town to gain insights into me-dia facilities and careers when one of them, Riyadh, said that he wanted to appear live on national TV.

The young boy was so confi-dent that the staff alerted Ab-dullah Khalid Al Dossari, the Assistant Undersecretary for Radio and Television.

Abdullah spoke with Ri-yadh and the other patients, Zainab, 11, Maria, 10, Rabab, 11, who voiced support for the television appearance and he pledged to make their wish come true.

He allowed them inside the studio that was broadcasting

live “Bahrain’s Sun”, a daily programme on events unfold-ing in the Kingdom with the participation of several Bah-raini figures.

The children sat on the sofa and answered questions asked by the presenters, who were seemingly pleased with the

spontaneous responses and enthusiastic reactions.

Ethiopia PM Abiy wins Nobel Peace Prize

• This year’s prize will be presented at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10

• The award consists of a gold medal, a diploma, and nine million Swedish kronor (around $912,000 or 828,000 euros)

Oslo| AFP

Hailed as a visionary and reformer, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy

Ahmed won the Nobel Peace Prize yesterday for his efforts to resolve the long-running conflict with neighbouring foe Eritrea.

Abiy was honoured “for his efforts to achieve peace and in-ternational cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initi-ative to resolve the border con-flict with neighbouring Eritrea,”

the Nobel Committee said. The award is seen as a wel-

come boost for Africa’s youngest leader as he faces worrying in-ter-community violence ahead of a parliamentary election in May 2020.

“I was so humbled and thrilled when I just heard the news,” Abiy told the Nobel Committee in a phone call posted online on the Nobel Prize website.

“It is a prize given to Africa, given to Ethiopia.”

Abiy also said he hoped it would inspire other African leaders to “think it possible to work on peace-building process-es”.

Since taking office in April 2018, the 43-year-old has aggres-sively pursued policies that have the potential to upend society in the Horn of Africa nation and re-shape dynamics beyond its bor-ders, after years of civil unrest.

On July 9, 2018, following a historic meeting in Eritrea’s cap-ital Asmara, Abiy and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki formal-ly ended a 20-year-old stalemate between the countries in the wake of the 1998-2000 border conflict.

Abiy swiftly released dissi-dents from jail, apologised for state brutality, and welcomed home exiled armed groups.

‘Winds of hope’His actions have sparked

optimism in a region of Africa marred by violence.

“I have said often that winds of hope are blowing ever strong-er across Africa. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is one of the main reasons why,” UN Secretary Gen-eral Antonio Guterres said.

The peace agreement with Er-itrea has “opened up new oppor-tunities for the region to enjoy security and stability,” and Abiy’s

“leadership has set a wonderful example for others in and be-yond Africa looking to overcome resistance from the past and put people first.”

The Nobel jury stressed that the Peace Prize was “also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconcili-ation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions.”

It singled out the Eritrean leader for praise, noting that “peace does not arise from the actions of one party alone.”

“When Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reached out his hand, President Afwerki grabbed it, and helped to formalise the peace process between the two countries.”

However analysts believe there is still some way to go be-fore a lasting peace, and the en-thusiasm has been mixed with frustration.

The border between the two countries has once again been closed, the countries still lack trade agreements and Ethiopia -- a land-locked country -- still has no access to Eritrean ports.

And last June, Abiy faced the greatest threat yet to his hold on power when gunmen assas-sinated high-ranking officials including a prominent regional president and the army chief.

Amnesty International said the prize should spur Abiy to en-hance reforms on human rights.

“This award should push and motivate him to tackle the out-standing human rights challeng-es that threaten to reverse the gains made so far,” the group said, pointing to “ongoing ethnic tensions that threaten instabil-ity and further human rights abuses”.

Ethnic violence has been on the rise in recent years, causing Ethiopia to record more inter-nally displaced people last year than any other country.

Push in the right directionRecognising that some would

consider the prize premature, the Nobel Committee said that while much remained to be done, the award should serve as encouragement, and pointed to the criteria set by prize creator

Alfred Nobel -- namely that the award should go to one “who has made the most significant contribution to peace within the past year”.

“We are confident that by far this is Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and we are also hope-ful that the peace prize could perhaps be a push on the peace initiatives in the right direction,” Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Commit-tee, said.

The committee had to choose

from more than 300 nomina-tions this year.

Online betting sites had put Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg -- who has already received Amnesty’s top honour and the Right Livelihood Award, sometimes dubbed the “alterna-tive Nobel” -- as the one to beat.

This year’s prize will be pre-sented at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of Alfred Nobel, who was a Swedish philanthro-pist and scientist.

Trump joins Amazon’s TwitchParis | AFP

US President Donald Trump who uses Twitter for many

policy announcements has now also joined Twitch, owned by Amazon, as he goes on the campaign trail for re-election.

Trump on Thursday opened his account on Twitch just be-fore a campaign rally in Min-neapolis which then streamed live.

Twitch, which has gained a following for livestreaming gaming, was acquired in 2014 by Amazon for $970 million, and has an estimated 15 million daily active users.

By Friday, Trump’s account had around 37,000 followers and the video of the rally at-tracted more than 165,000 views.

While mostly a site for gam-ers, allowing them to share recordings of their perfor-mances, Twitch also lets users upload and share non-gaming videos.

The platform received un-welcome attention this week when a video of a deadly shooting in the German city of Halle was posted there and seen more than 2,000 times before it was taken down.

Japan braces for what could be worst typhoon in 60 yearsReuters | Tokyo

A powerful typhoon ap-proached Japan yester-

day threatening to batter its capital with the heaviest rain and winds in 60 years, shutting down stores, factories and sub-way systems and disrupting a Formula One Grand Prix and rugby’s World Cup.

Typhoon Hagibis, which means “speed” in the Philip-pine language Tagalog, is due to make landfall on the main island of Honshu on Satur-day, a month after one of the strongest typhoons to hit Ja-pan in recent years destroyed or damaged 30,000 houses and caused extensive power outages.

The storm could be the strongest to hit Tokyo since 1958 and people should also prepare for high waves and storm surges, the Japan Mete-orological Agency said.

“The typhoon could bring record-level rainfall and winds,” an official at the agen-cy told a news conference.

First man to conduct spacewalk, Alexei Leonov, diesMoscow

Alexei Leonov, a Soviet-era cosmonaut who was the

first man to conduct a space-walk in 1965, died in Moscow yesterday aged 85 after a long illness.

The Russian space agency Roscosmos said it was sad-dened to announce the death of “cosmonaut No 11” who was twice decorated with the country’s top honour, the Hero of the Soviet Union.

Leonov was a close friend of Yury Gagarin, who became the first human to go to outer space in 1961.

Four years later Leonov made history when he left a spacecraft during the Vosk-

hod 2 mission for a spacewalk that lasted 12 minutes and nine seconds.

His return to Earth nearly ended in tragedy when Leonov and another cosmonaut, Pavel Belyayev, crash-landed in Sibe-rian woods.

His assistant Natalia Filimo-nova said that Leonov died at Moscow’s Burdenko hospital after a long illness.

Toyota unveils revamped hydrogen sedan to take on TeslaReuters | Tokyo

Toyota Motor Corp unveiled a completely redesigned hy-

drogen-powered fuel cell sedan on Friday in its latest attempt to revive demand for the niche technology that it hopes will become mainstream.

Japan’s biggest automaker has been developing fuel-cell vehicles for more than two dec-ades, but the technology has been eclipsed by the rapid rise of rival battery-powered electric vehicles promoted by the likes of

Tesla Inc.Ahead of the Tokyo Motor

Show starting on Oct. 24, Toy-ota unveiled a prototype of the new hydrogen sedan built on the same platform as its luxury Lex-us brand’s LS coupe. The new Mirai model boasts longer driv-ing range than its predecessor and completely redesigned fuel cell stack and hydrogen tanks, the company said.

“We wanted to make a car that people really want to buy, not just because it’s an eco car,” Yo-

shikazu Tanaka, chief engineer of the new Mirai, said at the un-veiling. “We wanted something that’s fun to drive.”

Its sporty redesign with longer wheelbase and lower-slung chassis is a marked departure from the first-generation Mirai, which looks like a bulked-up Prius hybrid.

The new car also has a 30 per cent improvement in driving range over the previous itera-tion’s approximately 700 kilo-meters (435 miles), according to

the company.Tanaka said the latest Mirai

would cost less to make than its predecessor, because of a shift to mass production. The current model is mostly assembled by hand.

Costing consumers about 5 million yen ($46,500) after subsidies in Japan, the origi-nal Mirai is one of three fuel cell cars available to consum-ers. Hyundai Motor Co sells the Nexo, while Honda Motor Co Ltd leases out the Clarity.

Hyundai, Kia earmark $760m to settle US lawsuits over engine firesReuters | Seoul

Hyundai Motor Co and af-filiate Kia Motors Corp

have earmarked 900 billion won ($758 million) to settle U.S. class action litigation and address engine-related issues in the United States and South Korea.

The move marks the South Korean auto giant’s first ma-jor effort to resolve years of trouble over engine defects that have also sparked probes by the U.S. safety regulator and prosecutors.

Hyundai Motor will make a provision of about 600 billion won in its July to September earnings while Kia will book one for about 300 billion won, they said on Friday.

Hyundai and Kia said in a

statement that under the U.S. settlement they would install software to monitor for symp-toms of engine failure and take other steps, including offering compensation options and life-time warranties.

A total of 4.17 million Hyun-dai and Kia models equipped with Theta II gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines will be affected by the U.S. settlement.

Total loses bid for palm oil tax breakParis

France’s constitutional court rejected yesterday a bid by

oil firm Total to secure a tax break for using controversial palm oil to create biofuel.

French legislators in 2018 excluded palm oil from biofuel inputs eligible for tax breaks, which threw a spanner in the financial works for a Total re-finery under construction.

Environmentalists say palm oil drives deforestation, with vast areas of Southeast Asian

rainforest having been logged or set ablaze to make way for plantations. In additional to releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gas carbon diox-ide, this has threatened the habitat of orangutans and oth-er endangered species.

EU, Britain to hold ‘intense’ negotiations on Brexit deal Reuters | Brussels

The 27 countries staying in the European Union after Britain leaves gave

the go-ahead yesterday for their chief negotiator to hold anoth-er round of intense and secret negotiations with London in a bid to secure a deal, two senior diplomatic sources said.

Michel Barnier and his British counterpart Stephen Barclay had earlier held what both sides called a “constructive” meeting in Brussels as Britain’s sched-uled departure date of Oct. 31 grew closer.

Their meeting followed a burst of optimism after the British and Irish prime minis-ters said on Thursday they had found “a pathway” to a possible deal.

The United Kingdom is due to leave the world’s biggest trad-ing bloc on Oct. 31 and despite the flurry of activity, it remains uncertain on what terms it will leave, when, and even whether it will do so at all.

“It’s a tunnel with a very small light at the end of it,” one of the diplomats said, indicating there was not too much hope on the EU side that a divorce deal could be sealed before the end of the month.

The “tunnel” - EU jargon for intense and secret talks - will go through the weekend and possi-bly as long as until Tuesday next week, the sources said.

EU ministers convene in Lux-

embourg on Tuesday for a last preparatory meeting before an EU summit next Thursday and Friday.

The diplomatic sources said Barnier disclosed little detail of the latest EU-UK exchanges to the member states but that Britain was “more open” to ad-dress Irish concerns over ar-rangements for its border with the British province of Northern Ireland.

“There is movement on the UK side on both customs and consent that bode well for chances for progress,” said a senior EU diplomat, explaining the rationale Barnier presented to the national envoys to justify going into more intense talks.

No other details from the meeting between Barnier and Barclay were immediately dis-closed.

“Be patient,” Barnier told re-porters as he left the meeting and went on to brief the 27 EU states. “Brexit is like climbing a mountain. We need vigilance, determination and patience.”

Earlier on Friday, in the Cyp-riot capital Nicosia, European Council President Donald Tusk said he had received “promising signals” from Irish Prime Minis-ter Leo Varadkar that a deal was still possible.

But Tusk tempered this by saying: “Of course, there is no guarantee of success and the time is practically up. But even the slightest chance must be used.”

Artificial meat coming to a supermarket near youNew York

Creating meat from cells is no longer the realm of science

fiction: a Russian cosmonaut did it aboard the Internation-al Space Station, and it is just a matter of time before these products arrive in supermar-kets.

Tests carried out in space in September led to the production of beef, rabbit and fish tissue using a 3D printer.

This new technology “could make long-term travel possible and renew space exploration,” to Mars for example, said Didier Toubia, the head of the Israe-li startup Aleph Farms, which provided cells for the tests.

“But our goal is to sell meat on Earth,” he said

The idea “is not to replace traditional agriculture,” he said. “It’s about being a better alter-native to factory farming.”

The first burger designed with cow stem cells was made by Mark Post, a Dutch scien-

tist from Maastricht University, and presented in 2013. Several startups have since taken to the niche market.

The cost of production is still very high, and none of the prod-

ucts are available for sale. The name for the meat prod-

ucts is still up for debate: lab-oratory, artificial, cell-based, cultivated.

But tastings have already

taken place, and industry play-ers are banking on small-scale commercialization taking place fairly quickly.

“It is likely to be this year,” Josh Tetrick, the head of Cali-fornia’s JUST company, which is growing meat from cells, said at a conference in San Francisco.

“Not on the market in four thousand Walmarts or in all McDonald’s, but in a handful of restaurants,” Tetrick said.

“The question is what do you want to put out at what cost,” said Niya Gupta, founder and CEO of Fork & Goode, which is growing meat from cells in New York.

“As an industry, we are finally making progress on the science. The next step is really making progress on the engineering challenges.”

The arrival of laborato-ry-grown meat on supermar-ket shelves at reasonable prices could happen in five to 20 years, according to estimates.

bit

RODDIE HASAN

Tesla comes when called, but can fray nervesAFP | San Francisco

Roddie Hasan loves his Tesla, but after a fright using a fea-

ture that lets him summon the car as he might a dog, he says he will be walking to get it.

The electric vehicle maker, a contender in the technology race to fully self-driving cars, last month issued a software update that included a “Smart Summon” feature for having Te-slas go to owners instead of the other way around.

A smartphone app acts as a re-mote control, and Tesla advised owners to keep their cars in sight the whole time.

Stepping from a pizzeria into a quiet parking lot, Hasan decided to “summon” his Tesla Model 3.

He watched as the car eased out of its stall and headed in his direction.

As his Tesla neared an inter-section, Hasan noticed a car coming quickly from another direction on what appeared to be a collision course.

Hasan jerked his finger from a button on the Tesla smartphone app. The vehicle halted, which he credits to either his action or onboard autopilot capabilities.

“In the end, I do not know if my car stopped by itself or if it’s me who stopped it,” Hasan said.

“I don’t want to try that kind of scenario again, so

I ’ m j u st g o i n g t o wa i t a little bit.”

He shared video of his Sum-mon feature experiment on Twitter, triggering a flood of comments from Tesla critics and fans, along with some who wondered why didn’t simply walk to his car.

Other manufacturers have added features that allow a ve-hicle to park itself and return to the owner, but Tesla’s broad rollout may be one of the most ambitious to date.

Rain and childrenEdmunds.com director of ve-

hicle testing Dan Edmunds was troubled by what he saw in video clips shared online by Hasan and others even though count-less cases of Summon working just fine have probably not been similarly put on display.

“I don’t like using members of the public as development engineers,” Hasan said of Tesla owners being de facto testers of the new feature.

“Doing it this way might be fine for a phone app, but for a vehicle that’s going to be coex-isting with cars on the highway and pedestrians... it’s unimagi-nable to me.”

Tesla did not respond to a re-quest for comment.

Tesla co-founder and chief ex-ecutive Elon Musk tweeted last week that Smart Summon had been used more than 550,000 times within days of becoming available.

Musk has expressed confi-dence that next year Tesla would launch a “robo-taxi” platform that would let self-driving ve-hicles provide people rides on demand.

Smart Summon is considered a step toward Teslas being able to operate without need of hu-man drivers.

“I have kids, so to be able to call the car, when it’s raining outside or you have a bunch of bags, it’s nice to get the car com-ing to you,” said John Stringer, president of Silicon Valley’s Te-sla Owners Club.

“It’s the next closest thing before full self-driving, the car being to make its way through the parking lot.”

The California-based com-pany’s vehicles boast “autopi-lot” capabilities, but at a level for use on highways only and

with someone in the driv-er’s seat to take control if needed.

“If I had to choose between the two features, I prefer auto-pilot; it changed my life on daily basis,” Stringer said.

“When you get home, you’re tired of long day at work, and you still need to unwind after driving for an hour -- but now I unwind from day of work in my car.”

Race against timeA plan to deploy fully auton-

omous vehicles on the road next year “does not leave much time, especially given that caution has replaced early op-timism for the technology, ac-cording to BCG consulting firm automotive specialist Xavier Mosquet.

Major car companies along with firms such as Uber and Google-owned Waymo have been in a race to field self-driv-ing cars, but it is looking as though the finish line could take a few more years to reach than first thought.

Mosquet said challenges in the way included dealing with foul weather and bringing down the cost.

And, autonomous cars must also win the trust of regulators and society.

Renault ousts CEO Bollore

Paris

French automaker Renault sacked its chief executive

Thierry Bollore yesterday, the latest turbulence to rock the company since the arrest of his previous boss Carlos Ghosn on financial misconduct charges just under a year ago.

In a terse statement, Renault gave no reason for Bollore’s ouster, nine months after he was named to follow Ghosn, who had been preparing to hand him the reins of the com-pany.

But the move comes just days after its Japanese alliance partner Nissan named a new CEO after the resignation of his predecessor, who stepped down last month.

In an exceptional board meeting Friday, “the board of directors decided to end the mandate of Mr Thierry Bol-lore as chief executive officer of Renault... with immediate effect,” the company said.

Speculation of Bollore’s de-parture increased after French daily Le Figaro reported on its website late Tuesday that he had a difficult relation-ship with board chairman Jean-Dominique Senard.

“This is how companies work. There are times when it is useful for a company to make a fresh start. It’s nothing

personal,” Senard told report-ers at a news conference after the board meeting.

“The revival of the alliance (with Nissan) was necessary,” he added.A source close to the company told AFP that Bollore was present at the board meet-ing and made his case.

“He was blamed for man-agement and performance fail-ings,” said the source.

“There was a vote. No board member opposed his dismiss-al, and there were very few abstentions,” the source said.

‘Always been loyal’But Bollore, a 56-year-old

with long experience in the auto industry, rejected the claims of performance failings, saying in an interview pub-lished ahead of the meeting that his only fault was being named deputy CEO by Ghosn in February 2018.

“The brutality and the total-ly unexpectedness of what is happening is stunning,” Bol-lore told financial daily Les Echos.

China’s Xi in India

• Xi and Modi will meet in the seaside temple town of Mamallapuram

AP | Mamallapuram, India

Chinese President Xi Jin-ping arrived in India yes-terday for meetings with

Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Xi was greeted at the Chen-

nai airport by Tamil Nadu state Gov. Patwarilal Purohit as a cultural group beat drums and blew horns.

India’s foreign ministry said Xi and Modi will meet in the seaside temple town of Mamal-lapuram later Friday and today.

Mamallapuram is decorat-ed with arches studded with fruits and green vegetables. Hundreds of young children in traditional dress carrying post-ers with photographs of Xi and Modi waited for hours to greet the Chinese leader.

The town was under tight surveillance, with thousands of security personnel. Mamal-

lapuram is 55 kilometers (35 miles) south of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

Xi arrived two days after hosting Pakistan Prime Minis-ter Imran Khan in Beijing.

Lalit Mansingh, a former In-dian ambassador to the Unit-ed States, said he expected an overview of relations by the two leaders and “instructions on how the relationship should proceed.”

Modi and Xi will also discuss India’s ballooning trade deficit with China and the question of allowing Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei into India’s 5G network.

“Xi will have an in-depth

communication with Modi on issues that have overall, long-term and strategic significance on bilateral relations, set the tune and guide the direction for future development of the ties,” Chinese state media quot-ed Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui as saying.

Xi will head to Nepal on Sat-urday, the first Chinese pres-ident to visit the buffer state between India and China in 22 years.

“We need to make greater efforts to develop a Multi-di-mensional Connectivity Net-work across the Himalayas,” he wrote in an article in three Nepali newspapers.

Bond movie filming causes terror scare at RAF base

London

The shooting for the 25th

James Bond mov-ie titled “No Time to Die” reportedly sparked a huge ter-ror scare while film-ing was underway at the largest Royal Air Force (RAF) air base in the UK.

The incident occurred at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire last week, after crew mem-bers left behind a van follow-ing days of filming, prompting 400 people to be evacuated from the base which was put on lockdown as bomb-sniffer dogs were brought in, reports thesun.co.uk.

Police cordoned off the large area after it emerged the van’s security passes had lapsed, among speculation the vehicle was full of pyrotechnic explo-sives. However, that was later disproved.

“Everything was packed up on Friday but amazingly one of the vans was left behind

outside the mess. I don’t know if it was the film company or the hire company, but some-one reported the van,” a source told sun.co.uk.

“Sniffer dogs from a bomb disposal unit were

sent in to investigate immediately. A 300

metre cordon was put in place while it was assessed by bomb dispos-al teams. It is an un-believ-a b l e b l u n -d e r t o have caused such a massive security risk.”

While the crew re-ceived a “slap on the wrist” for the incident, film com-panies will still be en-couraged to make mov-ies at the base because it “brings in a lot of money”.

Federer, Djokovic exit ShanghaiRoger Federer loses cool and follows Novak Djokovic out of Shanghai Masters

• Inspired Alexander Zverev defeats frustrated Roger Federer

• Stefanos Tsitsipas stuns Novak Djokovic in Shanghai quarter-finals

AFP | Shanghai

Roger Federer was given a point penalty as he fol-lowed Novak Djokovic

out of the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals in a bad-tempered defeat to Alexander Zverev yes-terday.

The 22-year-old German won 6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 6-3 as the Swiss legend was penalised after twice hitting the ball out of the court in anger and rowing with the umpire.

The sixth-ranked Zverev fac-es Austria’s Dominic Thiem or Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the semi-finals today.

Former number one Feder-

er evaded questions about the umpire afterwards, shrugging his shoulders and firing back at one reporter: “So you can write something on Twitter, yeah?

“Next question.”The 20-time Grand Slam

champion saved five match points to force a deciding set, but he then became engaged in a continual war of words with the chair umpire.

The 38-year-old’s trademark cool evaded him as the new gen-eration of men’s tennis stars took centre stage in Shanghai.

His point deduction came at 3-0 and 30-15 down in the third set, as he threatened to unravel.

He said that he “played al-right”, but was effusive about the rise of Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsit-sipas, all in the semi-finals in Shanghai.

“The young guys are knocking on the door big time, it’s exciting, it’s great,” he said.

Tsitsipas said that he scares the “Big Three” after the young Greek stunned world number

one Djokovic in their quarter-fi-nal.

The 21-year-old has now de-feated Djokovic, Federer and Rafael Nadal this year to burnish his fast-growing reputation.

On Saturday though he faces the red-hot 23-year-old Medve-dev -- who he has never beaten.

Tsitsipas recovered from los-

ing the opening three games in just seven minutes to shock the reigning champion Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Calling it the best comeback of his nascent career, the sev-enth-ranked Tsitsipas said he had dreamt of beating the “Big Three”.

But rather than being intim-

idated by them, Tsitsipas said: “I honestly feel like they are more threatened than I am and that makes me more relaxed on court.

“I know I just have to hang in there and be able to be more aggressive.

“Once you get aggressive and they see you going for it, I might

even say they get scared.”It was a double celebration for

Tsitsipas, who also confirmed his place in the prestigious sea-son-ending ATP Finals.

Tsitsipas sealed the deal with a gleeful smash and held both arms aloft. Djokovic met his op-ponent with a warm embrace at the net.

Djokovic, who had looked im-perious up until now, had no complaints.

Asked if Tsitsipas has the po-tential to be number one, the 32-year-old Serbian replied: “He definitely has, yes.”

‘Really tight’Djokovic says that he is fully

recovered from a shoulder injury and he did not drop a set in win-ning the title in Tokyo last week.

He had carried that ominous form into Shanghai and threat-ened to blow Tsitsipas away in the first set.

But Tsitsipas found his feet in the second set, then went 3-1 up in the decider when Djokovic planted a forehand wide on the third break point.

Croatia thump Hungary to stay on course, Slovakia hold WalesReuters | Split, Croatia

Croatia remained firmly on course to reach Euro 2020

after two goals from striker Bruno Petkovic helped them to a 3-0 home win over Hunga-ry while Wales kept alive their hopes with a 1-1 draw at Slova-kia in qualifying Group E.

The Croatians top the group with 13 points from six matches and will secure a berth in next year’s finals with a match to spare if they beat Wales away on Sunday.

Slovakia are second on 10 points from six matches, one ahead of third-placed Hungary, while Wales are fourth with seven points from five games. Bottom team Azerbaijan have one point from five matches.

The Croatians dominated af-ter captain Luka Modric fired them into a fifth-minute lead when he picked up a loose ball

in midfield, raced down the middle and steered a shot past Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gu-lacsi.

Petkovic made it 2-0 with a delightful back-heel from close range after Ante Rebic left his marker for dead on the left

flank and squared the ball to the Dinamo Zagreb hitman.

A catalogue of defensive er-rors allowed Petkovic to bundle in the third late in the first half, as Tamas Kadar and Gulacsi misjudged Ivan Perisic’s low cross from the right.

In a statement issued to me-dia, Razeena said it was a rare honour to receive the honour.

“When I entered the world of fitness about a decade ago, it was totally unchartered terrain

for women. Now, its promising and pleasing to see so many women fitness coaches.

“The growing awareness

among Bahraini and expatriate women to maintain their fitness regime is highly interesting.”

Razeena said maintaining fitness is one of the easiest ways to tackle life style dis-orders such as diabetes and hypertension.

“Latest research says that proper exercising can even ar-rest the onset of serious diseas-es including cancer.”

The fitness guru said she is overwhelmed to see many youth taking up fitness as a se-rious option.

Bottas, Hamilton fastest in practiceQualifying for this year’s Grand Prix at Suzuka has been postponed until Sunday morning because of the huge typhoon

looming off the coast of Japan

• Valtteri Bottas topped the second practice session

• Bottas could only lap just under half a second down on Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton

• Max Verstappen finished third in the session, ahead of Charles Leclerc

AFP | Suzuka, Japan

Valtteri Bottas was quick-est yesterday in prac-tice before the Japa-

nese Grand Prix locked down ahead of an approaching super typhoon, finishing a tenth of a second ahead of teammate and world championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

The Mercedes pair, benefiting in Japan from an aerodynamic upgrade package to their W10 cars, were comfortably ahead of the third-fastest Red Bull of Max Verstappen in the second session of the condensed racing weekend at Suzuka.

“It was a very positive day,” said Bottas. “We tried the new bits with the car. It felt good

since the beginning.”Just before the first session be-

gan yesterday morning, race or-ganisers announced that the en-tire Saturday track programme, including qualifying, had been scrapped for safety reasons in the face of the approaching Su-per Typhoon Hagibis.

Qualifying was rescheduled to 10am (0100 GMT) Sunday, with the race still taking place at 2:10pm (0510 GMT) as originally planned, providing the weather

improves.“(We) still need to remember

it’s only practice, Sunday is still going to be close with qualifying and the race,” Bottas said.

The Ferraris of Charles Le-clerc and Sebastian Vettel, who had dominated practice and qualifying at the previous four grands prix since the summer break, could only trail in fourth and fifth after failing to record a clean lap on the fastest soft tyres.

The loss of Saturday’s timeta-

ble added extra spice with only yesterday’s two practice sessions available to prepare the cars for qualifying.

And should bad weather lin-ger on Sunday morning and prevent the qualifying session taking place, the governing body FIA confirmed that the timings from yesterday’s second practice will be used to determine the starting grid.

That would leave Mercedes sitting pretty with a front-row

lockout as they look to secure the one-two finish they need to clinch a record sixth successive constructors championship.

Finland’s Bottas recovered from a mid-session spin on the final bend to lap the 5.807-kilo-metre circuit in 1min 27.8785sec, 0.100sec ahead of Britain’s Ham-ilton.

Local heroVerstappen of the Netherlands

was third on 1:28.066 in his Red Bull, 0.281sec slower than Bot-tas, with Monaco’s Leclerc was fourth on 1:28.141 and Vettel fifth on 1:28.376.

“Mercedes are looking very strong, which is no surprise on this track,” Verstappen told re-

porters. “But we made a good recovery from this morning.

“I’m not worried about do-ing qualifying and the race on Sunday as it won’t affect my approach. We can’t change the weather and it’s out of our con-trol, so now we just have to see what happens on Sunday.”

It was a timely riposte by Mercedes to the resurgent Fer-rari team who had dominated practice and qualifying since the summer break.

A win for Hamilton on Sunday would leave only Bottas, who lies 73 points behind, able to catch him in the drivers’ standings with just four races to come after Japan.

It would also put the English-man in line to wrap up a sixth drivers’ title, a feat only previ-ously achieved by Michael Schu-macher, and third world title in a row at Mexico later this month.

The fanatical Japanese spec-tators, left reeling from the news of a blank Saturday, were given something to cheer yesterday morning as local hero Naoki Yamamoto made his Formu-la One debut, replacing Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso for the practice session.

The 31-year-old reigning champion in Japan’s Super For-mula and Super GT series com-pleted 30 laps -- more than any other driver in the session -- and finished 17th fastest.

Bradmanesque Kohli puts India on topKing Kohli strikes double ton as India soar against South Africa on record

breaking Day twoAFP | Pune

Virat Kohli hit a ca-reer-best 254 to overtake batting great Don Brad-

man’s Test tally of 6,996 runs and put India in command of the second Test against South Africa yesterday.

Kohli recorded his seventh double century before he de-clared India’s first innings on 601 for five in Pune.

His 225-run fifth-wicket stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who made 91, shattered South Africa’s bowlers after the hosts elected to bat first.

The tourists were precari-ously placed at 36 for three at stumps with paceman Umesh Yadav claiming the two openers.

Ya d a v t r a p p e d A i d e n Markram lbw without scoring and then bowled Dean Elgar for six.

Mohammed Shami sent back Temba Bavuma caught behind for eight as South Africa slipped for 33 for three.

Theunis de Bruyn on 22 and fast bowler Anrich Nortje, on two, were batting at the close with South Africa needing an-other 366 runs to avoid a fol-low-on.

“We were thinking of 500-plus, not 600 but the manner in which Virat and Jadeja batted made it look very easy. It was

not a 600 wicket,” said vice-cap-tain Ajinkya Rahane.

“I think the fast bowlers still have good assistance if you can bowl in the right areas. But the ball is turning too,” he added.

Kohli took the day’s honours with a marathon innings that extended India’s domination after they resumed on 273

for three.

Run blitzPlaying his 50th Test as cap-

tain, Kohli surpassed Bradman’s total and then swept spinner Senuran Muthusamy for two to reach 200 and get the stadium crowd to its feet.

The benchmark puts him in the top 50 Test run-scorers led by Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar with 15,921 runs in 200 matches.

Muthuswamy had Kohli caught at slip on 208 with his left-arm spin but TV replays showed he had overstepped the bowling line and the delivery was a no-ball.

Kohli and Jadeja attacked the opposition bowlers with a string of fours and sixes.

Kohli smashed Muthusamy

for a boundary to go past his previous-best Test score of 243. He ended the day unconquered with 33 fours and two sixes.

Jadeja hit eight fours and two sixes in his 104-ball blitz.

The skipper started the day on 63, surviving hostile fast bowling from Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander.

He brought up his hundred before lunch with a delightful straight drive for a boundary off Philander.

He put on 178 with overnight partner Rahane, who made 58 before becoming spinner Kes-hav Maharaj’s 100th Test victim and the only Indian wicket to fall on the day.

“We enjoy each others compa-ny,” Rahane, who was involved in his 10th century stand with Kohli, said. “It was important to communicate well and that’s what we did.”

Maharaj went off the field with an injured shoulder and the team management were waiting to see how bad it was.

India had already been boost-ed by opener Mayank Agarwal’s second successive hundred on Thursday.

A series victory for India, who won the first of the three Tests on Sunday, will see them beat the record of 10 straight home series wins they share with Aus-tralia.

Nine-star Belgium book Euro placeAFP | Brussels

Belgium became the first team to qualify for the

2020 European Champion-ship finals as Romelu Lukaku scored twice in a 9-0 thrashing of San Marino in Brussels on Thursday.

Lukaku took his record Bel-gium international tally past 50 goals as Roberto Martin-ez’s Group I leaders opened up an unassailable 11-point lead over third-placed Cyprus with three games remaining.

“(For our next games) the approach will be identical, we have the responsibility to maintain our standards,” said Spanish coach Martinez. “The next step is to finish first in the group.”

The world-number-one ranked side booked their spot at next year’s tournament, which will be played at 12 ven-ues across Europe, after seven straight qualifying wins.

Russia appear set to take the second automatic slot from the group, after a 4-0 win over Scotland moved them eight points ahead of Cyprus.

Belgium will be one of the favourites as they look to lift a first major international title when the Euros get underway on June 12.

“In my eyes, nine countries have the talent to win the Euro,” added Martinez. “What will make the difference is how you face adversity. It’s neces-sary to sacrifice yourself for your teammates.”
