ABOUT THE ALAMEDAN The Alamedan was launched in February 2012 to provide Island residents with the knowledge they need to engage in critical conversations about the

future of our community – and to offer a local voice in an era of corporate-controlled media.

We provide fresh breaking and in-depth news every weekday and on weekends as events occur, along with breaking updates through our active

Facebook and Twitter pages.

As a nonprofit dedicated to providing news in the public interest, we put in the long hours needed to make sure our fellow citizens have an

authoritative record of what’s going on at City Hall and the decisions being made about their local schools. We also go beyond the traditional crime-

and-City Hall coverage by getting into corners of the community other media rarely examine, and by offering explanatory pieces aimed at enhancing

our neighbors’ understanding of their community and of the decisions being made on their behalf.

In the less than two years the site has been live, we’ve become the authoritative source for news on Alameda Point, local schools and more; received

professional recognition* for our high quality, nonpartisan schools coverage; and blazed trails with our use of web-only graphics and social media

tools that other media and government agencies have been quick to follow. We’ve also built a devoted following of readers for the reporting and data

we’ve provided on the site and through our print media partner, the Alameda Sun.

Now, we’re prepared to offer businesses an opportunity to demonstrate their support for this critical public service.

*Honorable mention, 2013 John Swett Awards for Media Excellence

MISSION The Alamedan’s mission is to promote civic engagement and transparency by providing high quality, nonpartisan news coverage, and

to create a local institution that supports and is accountable to our Island community. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and reliable

record of Alameda's civic life, serving as a watchdog over Alameda's major civic institutions and a local voice in Alameda’s affairs. The Alamedan is a

publication of the Alameda Community News Project, a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, a San Francisco-based 501(c)3 nonprofit.

WHY SPONSOR US? Sponsoring The Alamedan offers companies doing business in Alameda a high-profile opportunity to demonstrate your support for the community.

The main news site reached 13,000 unique visitors in October, and our organization reaches additional readers through our very active Facebook

page (1,200+ likes and growing), Twitter and in our daily e-mail blasts – offering you a range of opportunities for sharing your message.

Additional sponsorship opportunities will be available in 2014 as our team begins rolling out branded events.

A 2012 study conducted by the Pew Research Center for People & the Press found that 39 percent of the consumers they surveyed got their news

from a mobile device or other digital platform, a number that’s grown since Pew first asked people if they were getting their news online, in 2004.

That’s compared with 33 percent who got news from the radio and 29 percent who read it in a printed newspaper.

The Alamedan attracts some of Alameda’s most affluent and engaged citizens. Nearly 97 percent of our readers are registered to vote, and more

than 70 percent visit the site at least twice a week. Nearly 60 percent live in households that earn $100,000 or more a year.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING“The Alamedan is an absolutely indispensable source for local, in-

depth news about Alameda. There is no other place to learn about

the meetings of the City Council, the Planning Board, and the school

board, along with developments at Alameda Point and the city’s

parks, businesses and interesting people who live and work in our

city. The Alamedan is first rate!” -Richard Hausman

“I know that if anything important is going on in Alameda, The

Alamedan will know about it and report it promptly. The news pieces

will be about our city not San Leandro, Oakland, or any other Bay

area places like the "other" supposed news source. I appreciate that

mightily.” -Isadora Alman

SPONSOR GUIDELINES Thank you for supporting The Alamedan’s efforts to inform and engage Island residents in local issues. Our sponsor guidelines are as follows.

PERMITTED CONTENT Acknowledgements may contain a sponsor’s name and/or logo, along with location(s), a telephone number and a website address. In lieu of an

address, the sponsor message may describe a general service area (e.g., “serving the East Bay”).

Messages containing value-neutral descriptions of a sponsor’s products and services are permitted. Messages may also contain a slogan or mission

statement that is an established part of a sponsor’s identity, though direct comparisons to a competitor or their products or services are not

permitted.

Messages containing qualitative or comparative language, price information, explicit endorsements or other inducements to purchase are not

permitted. Messages may depict one specific product or brand name item and up to three generic product lines (e.g., “Bob’s Market sells fresh

produce, eggs and milk.”)

POLITICAL AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS As a nonpartisan, nonprofit news source, The Alamedan will not accept sponsorship requests from political organizations or candidates, and will not

publish messages advocating a position on any issue, candidate or political party. Sponsorship requests from advocacy groups will be considered on

a case-by-case basis, though messages advocating specific positions on issues will not be permitted under any circumstances (e.g., “registering

people to vote for 40 years” is permitted; “battling unjust laws that restrict your right to vote” is not).

PURPOSE OF SPONSORSHIP Sponsors should be aware that contributions are not, and should not be considered, payment for specific news coverage; they are a general

statement of support for The Alamedan’s mission and goals.

The Alamedan reserves the right to reject any sponsor message based on content or images it contains.

ACCEPTABLE FORMATS The Alamedan accepts sponsor messages in the following sizes:

728x90 and 300x250

Sponsor messages should be clearly identified and any messages with a white background must include a border to distinguish them from editorial

content.

Acceptable formats include GIF, JPG, PNG and SWF (Flash), with a maximum file size of 30k for static ads and 40k for Flash. Images must be of

good quality and cannot be pixelated.

Flash and other animated ads may loop a maximum of three times, and should run under 15 seconds total.

Any messages that will be served by a third party must be submitted in advance for testing and approval prior to appearing on the site. If a third party

ad server fails to respond in a reasonable time frame, The Alamedan has the right to remove the message until the problem is fixed.

Please allow 72 hours for the launch of sponsor materials.
