As an F-1 visa student, you have
certain enrollment and reporting
requirements that you must follow in order to maintain your
student status. Here are some tips to help you maintain your F-1
status:
Maintain your 12 unit enroll-
ment minimum THROUGH-OUT the semester. Falling
below 12 units places you out of status and requires
reinstatement with US
Department of Homeland Security (US DHS).
Do not let your I-20 expire
while in the United States. Please check item #5 or
the “Program of Study”
section on the I–20 for the expiration date.
Limit online enrollment:
Only 3 units of on-line enrollment count towards
your 12 unit requirement.
Students in violation will have their SEVIS record
terminated Do not engage in unauthor-
ized off-campus employ-
ment. This is illegal!
Address Changes: All F-1
visa students are required
to notify the International
Office within 10 days of moving. Please be sure to
do this so that we can update your SEVIS record.

World Teacher’s Day: October 5 “Empowering Teachers, Building Sustainable Socie-ties”
Teachers are a critical compo-nent to educating the youth of
the world and making a positive
impact on society. UNESCO’s World Teacher’s Day highlights
the importance of teachers and
the need to ensure that they
have the resources they need to carry out their important mis-
sion. This event was established in 1994 and is now celebrated in
over 100 countries.
Take the time to acknowledge
your IVC professors for the positive impact they are making
in your life and the lives of those
around you.
Pagmamano or Mano is a gesture of
respect for one’s elders that is
frequently seen in the Philippines. It is a greeting whereby the elder
extends their hand (upon hearing the expression “mano po”) and the
younger person bows while receiv-
ing the elder’s hand and pressing it to their forehead. The practice is
predominantly found in the Philip-pines and in some parts of Malaysia
and Indonesia.
What unique greetings does your
culture have?

Happy Halloween!
Halloween is Saturday, October 31st. It is a time
for witches, ghosts, goblins, haunted houses and
other scary things.
This tradition began thousands of years ago, but
has taken on different forms throughout the
ages. It began as an “end of summer” festival
when the priests would offer sacrifices to the
sun god and god of the dead. They believed that
the ghosts of the dead returned to earth during
this time and so they lit bonfires and wore cos-
tumes to scare off roaming ghosts. This is
where the idea of costumes on Halloween comes
from.
In future years, November 1st was celebrated as
“All Saints’ Day” - a day to honor all saints. The
October 12 Second 8 week classes begin.
Check each class for drop deadlines!
November 2 Last day to drop a class with a “W” (NOTE: Students should NOT drop classes if it
will put them under 12 units)
November 11 Veteran’s Day—campus closed
November 26-27 Thanksgiving Holiday—Campus Closed

evening before was known as All Hallow E’en or
“holy evening” which then became shortened to
Halloween.
Today, kids of all ages (though generally elemen-
tary aged kids) dress up in costumes on October
31st and walk around their neighborhoods to
collect candy from their neighbors. They knock
on the doors and say “trick or treat” in the hopes
of getting something sweet. If you are lucky, you
may be able to see some of the terrific costumes
of the young kids as they come searching for
candy at your door!
Adults like to celebrate Halloween as well with
costume parties. See page 3 for other Hallow-
een events you can join—including one at the IVC
campus!
