Mayors messageThis January to March edition of the Salisbury Seniors magazine will give you some ideas on how to activate your life including making new healthy habits and breaking those old ones.

A new year is also a good time to try something different - just like the people who joined a local theatre workshop series. They learnt theatre and performance skills and then performed to family and friends. Seniors involved in this workshop series said that they loved the opportunity to work as a team, appreciated being a part of something

bigger and had a lot of fun. If you would like to see the 'Out of the Box' performance, it will be showcased as a Salisbury Secret Garden Fringe event on Saturday 25 February at the Jack Young Centre.

I encourage you to read about Tina, a local resident, who had an access issue with her footpath. Tina contacted Council which worked with her to resolve the problem and she is now able to enjoy her local neighbourhood and all it has to offer. Details on page 7.

Don’t forget, now is the time to plan your activities and events

to make your year interesting and fun. You will find these listed at the back of the magazine.

If you would like to receive an electronic copy of future Salisbury Seniors magazines, phone 8406 8225 or email [email protected].

Yours sincerely,

Gillian Aldridge JP Mayor of Salisbury

Welcome to 2017. I hope you had a wonderful festive season and are now looking forward to an exciting and interesting new year.

creating HEALTHY HABITS

Salisbury SENIORS3

Most of us have a list of things we’d like to do better and very often those things involve changing habits. We may want to increase our physical activity, eat better, have more fun, relax or just get more sleep. Here are some strategies to help you build new habits or break old ones:

• Be specific - Don’t intend to ‘eat more healthy’ as that’s too vague. Identify what you really need to ask of yourself, for example, resolve to ‘eat breakfast’, ‘stop eating fast food’, ‘cook dinner at home’ and/or ‘don't drink sugary soft drinks’.

• Monitor your resolution - Track how you are doing as this will keep you focused and moving in the right direction.

• Give yourself external accountability - This is the ‘key’. Tell other people about your goal, work out with a class or do something with a friend.

• Treat yourself - Plan and give yourself healthy treats or rewards for achieving small goals.

If you break your resolution try again tomorrow. Use your 'slip-up' as a lesson on how to do better next time.

Think of strategies that will help you succeed such as:

• try exercising first thing in the morning before you get too busy

• do new activities to keep you interested and challenged

• check out your local over 50’s centre for low-cost classes - you could visit the Jack Young Centre in Salisbury or the Para Hills Centre or refer to page 22-28 to see what's on offer

Find something that works for you and that you enjoy doing… even better do it with a friend.

Wishing you well with your healthy habit goals in 2017.

[DON'T] ACT YOUR AGE

Salisbury SENIORS 4

[Don't) Act Your Age - Theatre Workshops and the 'Out of The Box' Performance.

Evidence shows that involvement in the arts results in improved wellbeing, reduced levels of depression and isolation and improved breathing and health. With a desire to include more creative arts opportunities within our program, the Jack Young Centre engaged 3’s Company and Mr Alan Hendry to run theatre workshops. They facilitated the 'Don’t Act your Age’ Recreational Theatre Workshops, which are a series of easy paced sessions designed to be accessible to a mature audience that learn basic theatre and stage performance techniques to unlock their creative potential.

Fourteen people joined the Theatre Workshops and over 18 weeks they learnt theatre techniques and formed a performance which they presented to friends and relatives. The performance titled ‘Out of the Box’ had a key message that older adults have a lot of untapped potential, knowledge and wisdom to offer. They don’t accept ageist attitudes.

Everyone involved did a fantastic job with many exploring their hidden talents and stretching their imagination. Participants taking part in the workshops found it very worthwhile - they loved the opportunity to work together as a team and appreciated the opportunity to be part of something ‘bigger’.

The performance will be held again during the Salisbury Secret Garden Fringe Event at the Jack Young Centre on Saturday 25 February 2017. Bookings are essential. For details refer to page 21.

The Theatre Workshops will also be run again in 2017 with the cost approximately $7 per session. Everyone is welcome as these sessions are for all levels of ability (so you don’t need to have theatre experience).

For further details contact Jim on 8406 8251 or email [email protected]

Have you made a New Year resolution? Did you include your ‘brain health’ in your resolution? It's not too late to make 2017 a priority for improving your brain health.

Alzheimer's Australia SA has published a quick checklist to help you get started. Take a look at the ‘5 Simple Steps’ to maximising your brain health below.

1. Look after your heart - what’s good for your heart is good for your brain.

2. Be physically active - regular exercise increases blood flow, oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain.

3. Mentally challenge your brain - remember ‘use it or lose it’. Keep your brain active with stimulating activities such as puzzles, games, crosswords, reading or learning a new skill.

4. Follow a healthy diet - aim to include a variety of healthy foods in your diet.

5. Enjoy social activity - regular social interaction with friends and family is incredibly beneficial for your brain health and wellbeing. Perhaps you could aim to join a group or community centre in the New Year.

In regards to setting goals, here are a few suggestions for the New Year:

• Learn a new language

• Learn to play a musical instrument

• Join a social group

• Visit somewhere you’ve never been before (museum, art gallery)

• Learn to dance

Remember to be realistic when setting goals for the New Year. It’s important to start slowly and increase over time. Perhaps work together with some friends.

If you would like more information on brain health or how to plan activities and set goals, visit www.sa.fightdementia.org.au

For further information and motivation visit www.yourbrainmatters.org.au or join us at our Brain Gym sessions at the Jack Young Centre or Para Hills Senior Centre. Date and time details available on page 20 to 22.

In July 2016, many of our readers received a copy of the Salisbury Seniors Magazine in the post. The magazine included a survey asking for feedback on the services that the City of Salisbury currently provides to older people and what types of services will be important for older people in the future. Additionally we were also very interested to know if our service would be recommended to others.

It was pleasing to note 513 surveys were returned which is 23% of the number distributed (which is fantastic as 10% is considered a satisfactory return rate).

Below is a summary of some of the feedback provided:

Additionally, respondents ranked in order of importance the services older people will need in the future. Following is the list, with '1' representing the most important to '9' being the least important:

feedback results

Salisbury SENIORS 6

• 92% stated they were aware that the City of Salisbury provides services to older people

• 81% identified they had used at least one of these services

• 94% said they would recommend Salisbury Home and Community Services to a friend

1. Domestic assistance

2. Transport

3. Home maintenance

4. Gardening

5. Home modifications

6. Group activities

7. Shopping support

8. Personal care

9. Meals

Below are some of the comments provided in regards to why people are happy to refer their friends to Salisbury's senior services:

"Because the friendship one makes is a big help to overcoming loneliness and keeps one in touch. I believe Salisbury Aged Care do a wonderful job with all their services and the volunteers are so helpful - thank you all"

"I was listened to, treated with equality and respect and the work was carried out promptly and efficiently"

"Salisbury service is good, respects different cultures and good home services"

To the hundreds of seniors that provided feedback - thank you so much, your experience and opinions are now helping us plan for the future.

Thanks for

your feedback!

LOCAL RESIDENT EXERCISES HER RIGHT TO USE THE FOOTPATH

Salisbury SENIORS7

Tina, of Parafield Gardens, is an active member of the Salisbury community and a founding member of the City of Salisbury Disability Access and Inclusion Network. Like a number of seniors she has mobility difficulties, but continued to be active - until the footpath network stopped her in her tracks.

Like most residential streets in the City of Salisbury, Tina's street has one footpath - and it is on the other side of the street. Her street also has roll-over or mountable kerbs which vehicles cross to access driveways.

"First using my walker I found it hard to get off my driveway with the steep kerb," Tina said. "It was a big step up or down and when it rained the water pooled on the road at the end of the driveway. Then my medical condition made it harder to walk so I bought a smaller mobility scooter which

you can take on the bus. I found that the steep slope of the kerb at the end of the driveway was impossible for the scooter to go down or up so I called Council and explained that the kerb stopped me getting to the footpath on the other side of my street."

Council responded to Tina's dilemma and installed a pair of ramps connected by a short path to Tina’s driveway.

"Now I can get off my driveway onto the road and up the new ramp on the other side onto the footpath," Tina said. "I can go independently to Hollywood Plaza, Aldi and the Parafield Gardens Swimming Centre. Now I can catch the bus because a second footpath and a hard standing area have been installed at the nearby bus stop on Lavender Drive - all the result of asking Council. It is so much easier to get around."

If you have any questions about access contact Michael, Inclusion Project Officer on 8406 8390.

I say to other people not to just complain

about a problem with paths and kerbs. Get in

touch with Council.

Asking for a ramp to

get to the footpath

network is not a

complaint, it is just

stating a fact!

RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING WORK FOR SENIORSThe City of Salisbury Community Health and Wellbeing Division recently received three awards in recognition of outstanding contribution to seniors. The awards detailed below support seniors to live an active and engaged life in the City of Salisbury. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Active Ageing Australia-Celebrate Age Awards

The Division was recognised for its role in keeping older Australians in the community active through a range of services that support seniors to age well. This includes:

• Councils Age-Friendly Salisbury Strategy

• working with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute to measure and build resilience and wellbeing among older people

Salisbury Legends Award 2016

"The Legends Awards have a rich history in Salisbury. They provide an opportunity to recognise local champions from across all sectors of our community," announced Mayor Gillian Aldridge, "They are about acknowledging people that inspire others and help make the City of Salisbury a wonderful place to live, work, play and study".

The Salisbury Heart Foundation Walk Organisers won the Active Legend Award and were praised by the Mayor for their commitment to encouraging people to be active in their local community. The volunteers' role is to organise and facilitate regular free walks for residents to give them an opportunity to be active and socialise.

The Heart Foundation Walks started in Salisbury in 2005 and have now grown to 11 groups with more than 250 registered walkers and, to date, 28,430 walks. This award is wonderful recognition of the role volunteers have in supporting Salisbury residents to be active in their local community. Congratulations to the Walk Organisers - and a big thank you!

Cities and Communities Take a Stand against Ageism

Social norms have deep roots - but social norms can change, and cities and communities can help to make this happen - World Health Organisation 2016.

The City of Salisbury is part of the World Health Organisation Age Friendly Cities Global Network. This Network asked members to submit examples of cities and communities taking a stand against ageism to showcase on their website. Salisbury’s COTA SA Conversations with Northern Seniors was one of 10 selected as a practice to share with the world.

Multicultural salisburyDid you know that 28% of Salisbury residents were born overseas? ABS Census 2011

Did you know that Council plays a pivotal role in welcoming migrants and supporting them to make Salisbury their new home?

What you may not know is that Council is currently developing a Multicultural Strategy to guide future directions over the next five years. It will be developed in consultation with culturally and linguistically diverse communities with a focus to enhance migrant settlement through programs and services, advocate for the delivery of appropriate initiatives within the region and provide a welcome and supportive environment for settlement into the community.

The document will link with Council’s vision 'Salisbury - a flourishing City with opportunity for all'.

If you would like to learn more about this strategy or have your say please contact Julie on 8406 8291 or email her at [email protected],gov.au

Page 11: SPECIAL EVENTS • WELLBEING • COMMUNITY ......Secret Garden Fringe event on Saturday 25 February at the Jack Young Centre. I encourage you to read about Tina, a local resident,

The City of Salisbury has been recruiting and we've been very fortunate that a number of people have put their hand up to volunteer for the Salisbury Seniors Alliance.

Volunteers in the Alliance will work with Council management to raise awareness of ageing issues across the City.  They will help to promote, engage, advise and monitor Salisbury’s age-friendliness and the implementation of the Age-friendly Strategy.  Most importantly, they will enable the voice of older people to be heard and this will influence Councils decision making.

The Alliance will meet every quarter and will have access to workshops for learning and development, community engagement and evaluation.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome these volunteers to Council and encourage them to embrace their role being a voice for seniors.

If you are interested in learning more about the Salisbury Seniors Alliance or would like to get involved, please contact Julie on 8406 8291 or email [email protected]

YOUR COMMUNITYWhat is your favourite thing about living in Australia? Here are the statements from two Bhutanese Social Support Program members.

Prem Gurung "As an emerging community member, I like the way we live in Australia. I love to learn the new culture and I'm proud to be a part of multiculturalism. I would like to thank the people and the government of Australia for giving me an opportunity to live in this beautiful country. I am proud to be an Australian and call Australia my new home."

Divya Loka Bhattarai "I am proud to be a part of Australian seniors. The Bhutanese Social Support Program run by the City of Salisbury has created a peaceful environment for seniors to overcome social isolation. I like the way everyone obeys and respects the Australian law. The environment in Australia is clean and I like the way the Australian government look after seniors. I can easily access the facilities like health, education, law and other social support."

Celebrating Australia Day

The 2017 Titanium Security Australia Day Family Picnic will again be a fun, family friendly celebration of Australian culture. Presented by the Rotary Club of Salisbury it is the area’s largest community event.

Held on 26 January at Carisbrooke Reserve, Salisbury Park, the fantastic parkland setting sets off a full day of entertainment, kids activities and food.

The day kicks off at 8am with the sounds of the Salisbury City Band and a free community breakfast featuring a healthy option as well as traditional bacon and egg sandwiches (until 10am or sold out). The day evolves into a spectacular flag raising ceremony at 9.30am directly followed by the City of Salisbury Australia Day Awards

and citizenship ceremony. Stage acts continue right through until 3pm and feature amazing local performers. There will be a mix of free kids activities and displays and paid ‘show type rides’ available for an all-day cost of $15 per head or $3 per individual ride.  Face painting, airbrush tattoos, reptile displays, military vehicles, monster cars, a mix of food stalls and a City of Salisbury display all add to an amazing event vibe. CONVERSATIONS WITH NORTHERN SENIORSWe value what you say and we're here to listen. This has been the mantra for the joint Council of the Ageing (COTA) and City of Salisbury initiative Conversations with Northern Seniors. In 2016 we offered six conversations and look forward to having more with you in 2017.

At our October conversation titled Strength for Life we heard compelling evidence linking physical activity to positive health and wellbeing outcomes which led to a very interesting conversation about what will support community members to be more physically active.

We were fortunate to have Melanie Smith, Executive Officer Active Ageing Australia, Jeanette Richards, Manager Strength for Life Program COTA SA and Jim Binder, Coordinator Wellbeing Programs City of Salisbury as guest speakers.

Our December conversation titled Reflect-Celebrate-Action was a highlight of previous conversations held throughout 2016. Community members reflected on the past conversations, celebrated what had been achieved and decided on future conversation topics. Senior citizens in the northern region were also invited to share their vision of and priorities for an age-friendly community with the information gathered informing and influencing an age friendly future for South Australia. See pictures on this event on page 13.

Conversations in 2017 will be held on Tuesdays: 14 February, 11 April, 13 June, 15 August, 17 October and 12 December.

If you are interested in joining a conversation in 2017 contact Jill on 8406 8364 or email [email protected]

A key milestone for the City of Salisbury in 2015/16 was the finalisation and introduction of the City Plan 2030 – the blueprint for achieving our renewed vision Salisbury – a flourishing City with opportunity for all.

The City Plan 2030 is a plan for the whole community, outlining the long-term vision for the City of Salisbury over the next 15 years. It identifies the necessary strategies and critical actions required within the next five years to achieve this vision. It shapes not only the services provided by Council, but provides strategic guidance to our entire community and our partners with regard to community priorities and our commitment to shaping our future.

• "Loved it when I began. I still do. I think I always will!"

• "Keep up the good work – it helps my brain"

• "It's marvellous as it is. I love coming to this special group. It does me the world of good"

Some feedback suggested the following improvements:

• replacement of equipment

• including more or different activities in groups

• increased male participation in some groups

• more participants in some groups

• venue size consideration for one group

Centre staff have communicated the feedback to Group Leaders to incorporate any suggested improvements where possible.

Council has identified Para Hills as an ideal place for a community hub. The location will be where the Para Hills Library and Para Hills Senior Centre are currently based and the site will be expanded to incorporate The Paddocks Community Centre to form the 'heart' of the Para Hills community.

Work will take place on transforming the facility to be fit for purpose, adaptable and incorporate sustainable design principles that maximise light, energy and water efficiency. Construction is planned for mid 2017 and the new hub will be open to the community in 2018. The existing Paddocks Community Centre will remain at the corner of Bridge and Kesters Roads until the hub opens and it will be business as usual at the Para Hills Library and Para Hills Senior Centre.

What is a Community Hub?

A community hub is a welcoming place for people of all ages and backgrounds that offers business, cultural, learning and recreational opportunities. It is a vibrant meeting place offering modern and well-equipped facilities for those who live in the City of Salisbury as well as those who visit. Spaces can be used for events, exhibitions, business needs, parties, training, group activities or informal socialising and relaxing. They are flexible so they can be easily transformed at short notice.

A hub is a focal point for the community, a place of social contact and individual and group learning. It is seen as having a distinct and valued role in the community of the future.

from the Pine lakes centreThe City of Salisbury supports many cultural communities to come together on a regular basis at the Pine Lakes Centre located at 16 Homestead Place, Parafield Gardens.

One of the cultural communities meeting every Friday fortnight at the Centre are people born in the Philippines. The group, known as the 'Filipinos' is fun and vibrant. They are interested in wellbeing, including body and mind fitness.

It is common for the group to start with a light morning exercise and then move to activities such as brain gym, karaoke, bingo, dancing, meditation and technology lessons. The group also offers monthly outings which is a favourite activity with participants. The last outing was to St Kilda where the group had a chance to release their 'inner child' and use the playground equipment, followed by a shared picnic lunch.

Gloria, a group participant, says she attends because of the friends she has made, the ability to talk in her native language, to reminisce, have fun and eat the fresh cuisines prepared by volunteers who are familiar with Asian cooking. She also says that she appreciates the information she has gained from the range of guest speakers that regularly visit the group.

For more information on Council's cultural group programs, please visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/culturalprograms or contact Thuy on 8406 8227
