ARTS/CULINARYAnything Goes Art!This is the perfect class for the undecided artist! You’ll explore the world of art as you learn about the tools and techniques that inspire creative expression in a variety of mediums. Each day you’ll work on a different project showcasing mediums like blown ink drawings, painting with resists, Artist Trading Cards and more. By the end of a fun-filled week, you will take home a group of one-of-a-kind pieces of art to display and share with your family and friends. Fabulous Fashionistas – Season IIDo you have a passion for fashion? You’ll begin this class by learning to create your own custom clothing form using lots of tape, stuffing and spray paint. Then gather sample materials and learn how to sketch your ideas for your designer paper clothing. With all kinds of adornments you will create a custom fitted, wearable paper outfit and at the end the week you and your designer classmates will model your creations at the very exclusive Fashionistas Runway Show. Parents and friends are invited to attend! Note: Each student will need to bring or wear a tight fitting crew neck T-shirt that will be the underlining of the clothing form. Students are also encouraged to bring their own found items to help embellish their clothing. Kids in the Kitchen: Culinary Arts InstituteJoin the ranks of young chefs exploding onto the culinary scene and work with a professional chef to create fabulous dishes every day. Along the way, you’ll get lots of hands on experience learning how to measure, mix, stir and use the tools of the culinary trade. The week will include a ‘meet the farmers’ visit to the Ashland Farmers Market and a tour of the garden at SOU’s new Center for Sustainability where you’ll learn how some of your recipe ingredients are grown. Mask Maker, Mask Maker, Make Me a Mask!Masks are worn for protection, entertainment, ritual and disguise. The ancient Aztecs used gold and precious gems on their masks while feathers, seashells and wood adorned masks in Papua New Guinea. Guests at medieval masquerade balls hid behind their masks. You’ll learn about the colorful history of these pieces and use your personal inspiration and vision to custom design your own mask. Shazam! Super Power Heroes and Heroines in Art!Bring all of your kid super powers with you and learn how to draw the essential parts of virtually every Superhero or heroine in history. You’ll explore the shapes, sizes and style of these characters as you create drawings of Batman fighting crime in Gotham or Wonder Woman’s homeland Themyscira and her famous Lasso of Truth. The Eyes Have ItOn the face of it, artists begin drawing faces starting with the eyes and work outward from there. In this amazing class with a master teacher, you’ll experiment with drawing the kinds of faces that interest you the most. There’s an App for That: Computer Games and Apps Institute Do you have a passion for gaming, computers, electronics, and new technology? Building on basic programming techniques you’ll learn about the construction of gaming programs in hands on activities using Game Maker software. Mobile apps are the next step as you dive into the details of app construction with your instructor as your guide. Horsing Around at the Flying L RanchCalling all horse lovers! Learn to ride and care for horses this summer in classes that are based on CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) instruction. Campers participate with pride in the routine hands-on care and handling of horses and find out what it really means to own a horse. SCIENCE/ STRATEGY GAMES/ENGINEERING Bee AcademyDiscover what all of the buzz is about in the Bee Academy! You will get a hands-on, up close experience as you study the lives of bees. The SOU apiary in the ECOS Community Garden has three bee hives, and this garden will be our outdoor classroom. Young beekeepers will wear protective bee suits and use beekeeping equipment to explore the inner workings of a honey bee hive. You will record your observations of bee behavior in your Bee Log, monitor the health of the queen, taste real honey, and plant native wildflowers in the garden to provide nectar and pollen for the bees. You and your classmates will also design and build a “bee hotel” to host native bees in the apiary. Crime and Puzzlement: Crime Scene Investigators InstituteBecome a detective and conduct forensic science tests on evidence found at mock crime scenes. You’ll use your powers of observation, your critical thinking skills and your ability to work with a team to solve multiple mysteries. Using crime scene investigation principles, you’ll perform experiments to narrow down your suspect list and interview suspects while piecing together the events leading up to the crime. Epic Chain ReactionsHave you ever heard of the ‘domino effect’? It means that a chain reaction of some kind has been set in motion and will continue until it is interrupted. In this exciting class you will be creating epic or life sized domino effects as you learn about Newton’s Laws of Motion and thermodynamics. Working with a team to plan and design a variety of chain reactions using simple machines and other objects you will execute your plans. Your critical thinking skills will help as you measure and build in this epic class. Science Explorers in Nature InstituteThe world around will be your guide as you become a nature explorer and find out what what a day in the life of a field scientist might be like. Keeping notes and drawings in your field notebook, you will record your findings, get your hands on animal pelts and bones and conduct experiments in the lab to uncover the workings of our ecosystem through science. NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH ACADEMY A Camp for Native American studentsJuly 11-18, grades 7-12Konaway Nika Tillicum is a residential academy exploring a broad range of classes, lectures, cultural experiences and recreational activities in a university setting. Instructor Profiles

Sherri Beeler has taught English for 24 years, along with Paper/Altered Arts; her published work appears in The Stamper’s Sampler, and Create With Me magazines.

Amanda Cordes is working toward her Master’s degree in Environmental Education and a secondary teaching license in biology at Southern Oregon University.

Samar Dawisha is a mixed media artist, performer and art educator. She has taught art (from painting to sculpture), performance and clay animation in the Rogue Valley for over 20 years to children, teens and adults.

Chris Duval has taught LEGO Robotics classes for 7 years at Kids Unlimited and for 3 years at SOU Pre-College Youth Programs. He enjoys technology and owns his own business fixing computers. He has been interested in LEGOS and robots since he was old enough to walk.

Alyssa Grove holds a B.S. in Environmental Studies for SOU and has worked as a naturalist and outdoor guide for the last 5 years in North Carolina, California, Hawaii and Oregon.

Alexandra Harding earned a degree in biology from Western Oregon University. She is a graduate student in the Environmental Education and in the Master’s of Arts in Teaching Programs at Southern Oregon University.

Jamie Hickner teaches English, supervises MAT Language Arts students at Southern Oregon University, chairs SOU’s Bee Campus USA Committee, and is a co-founder of Pollinator Project Rogue Valley.

Leslie Hunter is the Owner/Operator of the Flying L Ranch. She is a former outfitter and guide with the Oregon State Marine Board. She has three decades of hands-on experience working with horses.

Craig Honeycutt holds a M.A. in Art Education and is a local artist with more than twenty years of teaching experience.

Maureen Honeycutt is earning her M.Ed. in Early Childhood Development at SOU. She worked as a head teacher at Duck’s Nest Preschool in Berkeley, CA. from 1990-1997.

Michel Knowles has a passion for technology and programming and is a recent graduate of SOU with a B.S. in Computer Science/Multimedia. He also holds degrees in the applied sciences from Rogue Community College and the U.S. Airforce.

Oneal Latimore holds a B.S. in Anthropology and a B.S. in Emerging Media and Digital Arts with a minor in Education from Southern Oregon University. He is currently teaching technology to youth at Kids Unlimited Academy in Medford, Oregon.

Pravina McClure is a licensed art teacher, and a graduate of two art schools. She has taught K-12 to the university level and uses a creative classical approach to teaching.

Marilyn D. Moore is a Le Cordon Bleu Graduate and a Certified Culinary Educator with the American Culinary Federation. She is the owner of Creative Organic Catering.

Kathy Nguyen is passionate about people and the outdoors! She has a M.S. in Environmental Education and is earning her teaching license in biology. She embraces learning through hands on experiences and explorations.

Jeff Rhoades holds a Master’s in Educational Information and Technology and teaches Media Arts at Phoenix High School.

Otis Richardson has been teaching high school Business Education classes for 12 years. He holds a BA and a MA in Education from Southern Oregon University.

Steve Roby has been teaching in the Rogue Valley for 8 years and is a teacher with the Logos Public Charter School. He holds a M.A.T. degree and has a passion for working with youth.

Christopher Rosetta has been teaching for 21 years and has developed a full computer science program in game and mobile app development as well as advanced programming for School District #7 in Grants Pass, OR.

Anna Schatz specializes in test prep and has a background in law and teaching. She is a Rogue Valley native and longtime Portlander.

Dylan Shelton is the local Salle’s leading fencer and long-time Southern Oregon Fencing Center Instructor.

Kelly Sosa is an SOU Outdoor Program instructor, youth tennis camp instructor. She is also certified in Wilderness Remote First Aid/CPR and a service dog trainer /instructor.

Althea Sullivan has taught whitewater kayaking at the City of Eugene for the past four summers. She has also lead numerous trips for the SOU Outdoor Program, and was the Whitewater Program Coordinator for two years. She has led hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, snowshoeing, and other outdoor trips and currently a holds Wilderness First Responder certificate, and is pursing a degree in Environmental Studies.

Ryan Wymore is an Assistant Pro-golfer at the Centennial Golf Club in Medford, OR. He has been through the Professional Golfers’ Association of America’s (PGA) training program and has taught golf to youth and adults for three years.

Mary Wilkins-Kelly is an artist who enjoys sharing her love of mixed media and photography with her students. She has 19 years of teaching experience.

Wind Woods is a playwright and educator. Currently working on a doctorate in Theatre at UC Irvine, Wind has taught a variety of courses in the performing arts and creative writing fields from K-12 to the university level.

Dana Yearsley is a competitive tennis player, a high school varsity soccer coach, and has taught skiing at Mt. Ashland for over 30 years. She teaches at Willow Wind Community Learning Center and is a farmer for the Rogue Valley Farm School.

Pre-registration accompanied by FULL payment is required for every class, and classes fill on a first-come basis.Refund Policy. We will issue a refund (minus a $25 cancellation fee) if a student withdraws at least two working days prior to the first class meeting.Cancellations. In the event that a class does not receive sufficient registration to meet the enrollment minimum, the class may be cancelled.
