G&W’s Viper-S solid dielectric, threephase reclosers combine the timeproven reliability of electronicallycontrolled, vacuum fault interrupterswith the maintenance benefits of asolid dielectric insulated device. Thereclosers are designed for threephase automatic or manual tripoperation providing overcurrent protection for systems rated up to38kV maximum, 800A continuous,and 12.5kA rms symmetrical interrupting.

FEATURESReliable performance - Viper-Sreclosers utilize G&W’s time provenepoxy polymer system to fullyencapsulate the vacuum interrupters.This system provides excellent insulation properties while providingfully shielded, void-free construction.All modules are UV protected and100% factory tested for partial discharge. The Viper-S recloser utilizes the latest in magnetic actuator technology. The interrupterand actuator assembly are testedannually for 10,000 mechanical operations to ensure a long servicelife. If AC power is lost, the recloserhas enough stored energy to triponce, after the control sends the tripcommand, within a 24 hour period.

Control Flexibility - Viper-Sreclosers are designed to work witha variety of different controls including Schweitzer’s SEL-351R,Falcon™, SEL-651R, SEL-351S,GE’s URC and others.

Operator Safety - Vacuum inter-rupters are sealed within a soliddielectric insulation. A hookstickoperable manual trip and lockouthandle prohibits operation eitherfrom the control or remotely. Amechanical blocking device furtherassures against accidental closethrough the handle. An open andclosed contact indicator verifies con-tact position. Contact status andlockout condition can also be verifiedat the control.

Maintenance-free - Solid dielectricinsulation provides a maintenance-free installation. Electronicequipment associated with the

operation of the magnetic actuator(s)are located in the control.

Ease of Installation - The Viper-S islightweight and compact. Site-readydesigns provide all accessories including bracket, arresters andvoltage transformers preassembledprior to shipment significantly reducing installation time. One sin-gle control cable brings all current,breaker status and trip/close information into the control.

Application Flexibility - Units aredesigned for overhead, substationand padmount applications.Polemounted units can be equippedwith either horizontal or vertical insulators. Removable silicone insulators are standard for overheadapplications. This feature permitseasy field replacement if an insulatoris damaged. Higher external BILrated insulators can also be retrofitted if necessary.

Smart Grid / Lazer AutomationSolutions - The Viper-S is automationready, simplifying conversion for anyfuture automation requirements. Amulti-ratio current transformer isencapsulated within the module. Thecurrent transformer is provided atratios of 500:1 and 1000:1. Inputs to

the control are field changeable. CT accuracy is +/-1%. Optional capacitive style voltage sensorsencapsulated within each modulepermit voltage reading for networkreconfiguration while eliminating theneed for add-on sensors and cabling.Voltage amplitude sensing accuracyto +/- 5% over the temperature range+65°C through -20°C when tested asa system. External voltage and current sensors can also be useddepending on application requirements.

Complete Lazer automation packages are available offering apre-engineered solution for applica-tions requiring intelligent automaticswitching and power restoration. Thepackages feature one or more pro-tective relays, (typically Schweitzer),equipped with distribution and com-munication capabilities. Availablecommunication devices include fiberoptic transceivers and wireless radio.

OPERATION OPTIONS Dead-line operation - Permits usingthe batteries located in the controlfor operation of the recloser if ACcontrol power is lost. A remote status signal reports the operationalstatus of the interrupter power supply permitting remote indicationof the control’s capability to open orclose the recloser.

Custom Relay Solutions (CRS) -The CRS option permits using48VDC or 125VDC control logicvoltage as an alternative totraditional 14-pin SEL, Cooper andGE controls which use 24VDC forcontrol logic. Recloser power is notaffected. This flexibility reducesinstalled cost for retrofit projects bylimiting the need to change relays orreplacing the input/output boards.

Internal voltage sensing - Permitsvoltage reading for network reconfig-uration applications and provides asecondary analog 120V AC outputaccepted by most relays.

MANUAL TRIP OPERATIONOperation of the hookstick operablemanual trip handle trips and locks outthe recloser. A contact position indicator is provided indicating openor closed status of the contacts.Module contact status is also displayed at the control. Operation ofthe manual trip handle disables anylocal or remote closing operation untilthe handle is reset. A mechanicalblocking device further assuresagainst accidental close through thehandle. The handle is operable fromground level. Once reset, the recloser can be closed from thecontrol.

CONTROL CONNECTIONSTwist style connectors make cableconnection between control and recloser extremely easy. Thetraditional 14-pin recloser controlconnector design is the same asother “Cooper” style recloserspermitting easy change out of previously installed controls and/orreclosers.

CONTROL CAPABILITIESVarious style controls are availabledepending upon application require-ments. Typical control settingsinclude:• Minimum trip for phase, ground

and sensitive ground faults.• Numerous preprogrammed and

user-defined time current curves for sensing phase or ground faults.

• Three independent recloser interval times. Capable of up tofour shots to lockout.

• Reset time.• Sequence coordination.• Cold load pickup.• Advanced parameters. Refer to

control specifications for more details.

Dead-tank construction makes itideal for substation circuit breakerapplications and ensures the shielded solid dielectric module isgrounded to earth pote ntial.

For applications where extendedcreepage is required, larger insulators can be applied up to940mm and 150kV BIL. Externalbushing CTs can be mounted atthe base of the insulator wherethey can be used for metering orrelay protection schemes like busdifferential. The mechanism housing for substation applicationsis rated IP46 for maximum protection from water intrusion.

PADMOUNT APPLICATIONSFor applications where space is limitedat the substation or where undergroundfeeders require protection, Viper-Ssolid dielectric reclosers can providean ideal solution using a dead-frontpadmount design. In this configuration,the cable connections can be providedwith either a standard IEEE apparatusor deepwell bushing for elbowconnectors. Different style modulespermit either all front access orfront/back access to cable connec-tions and operators depending onuser preference. Controls can bemounted directly to the recloser frameor within a separate adjacent enclosure.
