Relay For Life

Two weeks ago was a night to remember at Spring Valley High School. The event that took place was Relay For Life in which many clubs and organizations participated in. Relay For Life is an event where it helps communities celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remem-bered lost loved ones, and fight against the disease. Many clubs, including Northwest Key Club, fund raised money for the American Cancer Society by selling Korean BBQ. By raising money, we are taking a step in saving many peoples' lives. At the event, we took a survivors lap to honor those who have faced cancer in their lives and celebrate the achievements they have made in order to win the fight against it. There was also a Luminaria ceremony where we remember the ones we have lost to the disease and by doing so, we light candles that spell out hope to show that others out there dealing with this situation still have a chance. Aside from that, not only is it great service, but it's also a time to create memories and connect with one another. Overall, this was a memorable night and it is worth attending to next year.

“Cancer never sleeps, neither will we.” The whole point of Relay For Life is to stay up because cancer never sleeps. I honestly can I say I never experi-enced anything like Relay For Life before now. Relay For Life was a experience I think everyone should have at least once in their life. I learned how cancer affected the life of a survivor and how it affected lives of the cancer patient loved ones. It was a really emotional experience but it was a fun one too. The Luminaria ceremony was amazing. While I didn't know what to expect the Luminaria ceremony is hard to put into words you just have to experience it. The track lit up and it is was all quiet around us. The word HOPE lit up on the bleachers so big and bright. People held each oth-ers arms as we walked the track. It was a moment of silence while we walked around the track during the ceremony. The Luminaria Ceremony is t o remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor the survivors. During Relay For Life people walked the track, sold food, sang, laughed, played sports, setup their tents, eat, gather, and meet new people. Our club sold Korean BBQ and we earned a lot of money to help cancer. We also played games and took pictures! I think that Relay For Life helped us bond more as a club and get to know each other more than we did before. At Relay I got to see how other people reacted when they were really tired and fought to stay awake. I got to experience Ms. Relay pageant! I got to dress up Calvin Kleber as our Ms. Relay entry. He wore a pink sash and loads of makeup. I can say for sure that the pageant was the funniest thing I have ever seen and it was one of the things everyone has to experience! Overall Relay For Life was such a good experience and EVERYONE should attend next year!

Krysta Phoumiphat Bulletin Editor

My first experience at relay for life was... hectic. I guess you could say. From start to finish I was up and about doing what-ever it was I was doing. Even before getting to relay I was in a state of pure chaos, getting food

ready for our Korean BBQ along with bringing my own stuff was just ridiculous. But nonetheless I enjoyed every moment of it. Starting off with the intro to relay I was drop dead excited for this event, since I had heard so much about it from just about every key clubber I know. As soon as the walk of the survivors was over everyone scattered and well frankly I did-n’t know what I was supposed to be doing so I decided to follow my Key Club. Where we came to setting up our tents. Just getting tents set had made me realize I was going to ab-solutely love this event; oh did I mention that I also got to have some milk tea boba? As soon that was done then we setup shop and started the fires for our Korean BBQ stand. This in itself was stressful, well mostly for Krysta, but other than that it was a rather good time, except for when everything just died and well other than that I had a blast just making that Korean BBQ. I forgot to mention we did get to roast marshmallows, make smores, and cook some bacon at 3 in the morning. Ok well enough of what basically happened let’s talk about the thing I loved most about relay. The thing I loved the most had to be being able to meet all the different Key Clubs, and meeting the different members of each club. I may have not known anyone at the beginning, but by the end I had made many, many relationships with other key clubbers. I’ll take Phil as an example I only met him once during K-One Day, thinking that would be the last time I would see him until the end of the year DCM came around, at that time I was sure that was the last time I would meet him, but was I wrong the second time came around I had met him for the third time, and this time around him and I, let’s just say we became great friends. Alright, alright I shouldn’t be leaving out the one part that I found really interesting, the illuminati gathering. Just lis-tening to the stories made me realize that I was here for more than just socializing, I don’t know why I didn’t realize sooner but I did at that moment. It was a short moment but what was being said changed my whole mind set as this was the first time I had heard firsthand the effects cancer had on people. All in all, this small event had a huge impact. I’m going to bring this to an end; Relay For Life was many things: fun, amazing, mind blowing, etc. The list could go on and on if I was to continue but I know one thing for sure I will be going to relay again every year that I possibly can.

Kite Day

This has been the very first time I was able to volunteer and attend Kiwanis Kite Day with my Key Club. Honestly, I must say that everyone who came to volunteer worked and bonded together so well. I was given the chance to meet and become friends with quite a few people and become closer to those in my own Key Club. Key Club helped Kiwanis set up booths, prepare and handout food, and distribute kites to the young children and families. Being able to see other families bond to-gether through this event with such happiness showing on their child’s face, it was truly a heartwarming picture. It was a great experience that encourages me to go through the following year. The cooperation

was great and I liked the fact that the event was free to the community. Food, decorated kites, and balloons were all free to those who attended the event. I suggest that others should go from now on, because it’s a great way to help, earn hours, represent, and have fun through service. The event was highly enjoyable; I could tell that there were good feedbacks from the people who came. Key Club advertised around the park to parents to feel welcomed and bring their children by. The outcomes of this event came out to be greater than I had ex-pected, quite a lot of people came to a kite event. I haven’t seen people fly kites in the longest time, the scene of everyone working together happily, playing, and representing our Key Club was such a good feeling in return. Service is a great way to make friends, help others and the environment, and receive a good feeling in return.

Kite Day

Kiwanis Kite Day went down this Saturday and I had an absolute blast! My arms are still horrendously sun burnt but I couldn’t have asked for a better time. Turn out rates were great, and I’m glad for that. I think little events like these get overlooked, but they’re a really good opportunity to promote our relationship with our sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs, as well as each other. RTC and Fall Rally are fun and all, don’t get me wrong. But it’s days like these, where a group of dedicated people get together to make a difference is what reminds why I joined Key Club. And although I suck at tying knots, suck isn’t even adequate way to describe how awful I am at it, really. I lit up seeing these little kids with their kites flying higher than I would’ve even thought possi-ble, and watching them tug their mother’s shirt sleeves towards the decoration booth (one girl drew the Filipino flag on her kite, I thought that was hilarious) it was awe-some, and since it’s a Kiwanis Event, there were kids from Key Clubs all over town, some of whom I haven’t seen in months, so that was really nice to catch up and again, be reminded of how much Key Club and Kiwanis do outside of NWCTA. During break sessions we got some food for ourselves, played Frisbee, slapped sun burnt backs, basked in the sun or hid in the shade for fear of getting dark. All in all it was a day of simple pleasures, honestly. It’s beginning to feel like summer, and having an afternoon with your friends is the best way I could think of to spend it, and it’s not every day you literally get to watch the effect of the service you give go beaming off into the wind with a kite you help made. I highly, highly encourage everyone to come out next year, along with the Kite Day Assembly, to try and make this event bigger and better . I love how community driven it is, it’s at Aliante Park with everyone to see, and is available to literally anyone passing by, everything is free and is done out of the warmness of the hearts of the volunteers. So please, I plead of you, come and show your heart, your Key Club spirit, and have a great time doing it!

1.) If you could give the world one piece of advice, what

would it be?

My advice would be to have as much fun as you can. Whenever I go to any event, all I want to do is have fun. Most events won't happen

the same way so you can miss out.

2.) If you could have a room full of any one thing, what

would it be?

If I could have a room full of anything, it would probably just be a bunch of different foods. I'm usually always hungry or eating. An

entire room of food would be nice

3.) What do you value most in other people?

I value respect in other people. These days society can get a bit mean to one another. Respect is needed for lives to run smoothly.

4.) If you could only see black and white except for one

color, what color would you choose to see?

If I had to choose I would say blue that way I could see the sky and the ocean. Something that covers the world the most and two things I

love the most.

5.) If you could change one thing about yourself, what

would it be?

If I could change something about myself it would most likely be my constant procrastination. I tend to wait till the last minute on every-

thing

6.) If you could choose one of your personality traits to

pass on to your children, what would it be?

I would like to pass down my out going personality. Being out going is how I got here today.

7.)What would you attempt if you knew you could not

fail?

Something I would try would be parkour. It spiked my attention but I have been afraid to try .

8.) Would you rather teach a young child to read or

have to learn again for yourself?

Get to know John more! :)

I would learn how to read again, because I'm not the best at reading so a revisit to the learning would be good.

9.) What is the best advice you've ever given and received?

A piece of advice I got was from a movie that my friend repeated to me. It was " There is not try, only do or do not." it motivated me to do better. A piece of advice I gave was, "Keep moving forward."

10.) How would you like to die?

The way I want to die is saving someone. I know it's cliché but I have always thought of dying that way ever since I was little.

11.) Why did you join Key Club?

I heard a lot of stories about it from my sister. It just sounded like a great club and I was glad to join.

12.) What do you expect from our Key Club next year?

I have high expectations for this coming year and I am excited to see the turn out of members and the retaining of members. And I will hone my skills over the summer so I can be the best Sergeant at Arms I can be .

13.)Why did you run for SAA?

I ran for SAA because I wanted to further my leadership skills and wanted to help out with Key Club.

Key Club Banquet

Just so you know

Mark

Calenders

Our Key Club Retirement/Installation Officer Banquet was such a blast. We kicked off with our regular routine and then we showed the video I made about the entire year and then it was paused to be played while everyone ate. Before we ate we had an Ice Breaker and it was Simon Says. It was fun to do an Ice Breaker with everyone because it just made me remember all the memories made this year. Then we had food! Everyone was called up by the color of their mask and my goodness there was so much food. Our members brought Spam Musubi, sushi, pasta, fruit platters and we had Macaroni Grill and IHOP catering too! The food tasted delicious! After all those events while we were eating Ms.Hofhein’s speech was up next. Her speech was informative and inspiring! We then heard Carlos’ speech which was kind of emotional and it was so sweet. Through his words it showed how much Carlos has dedicated to the club and how much he loves Key Club. Even though he is going off to college he is a Key Club-ber at heart and will always be in ours. Officer retirement was a way to recognize all our officers from the 2011-2012 school year. I am so happy that we had such a great board this year and I hope our 2012-2013 board can live up to their expectations. The board took pictures as a group and it was so cute to see the board all together and happy like that! I am so appreciative of the board of our 2011-2012 school year and couldn't wish to have a better board. 2012-2013 Officer Installment was a big deal to me! Because this is my first time on board it was a fun experience to be in-ducted as Technology Editor! I am so proud of our board so far and I just know that everyone else is too. Jordan’s speech was a really good one. He showed the previ-ous Key Clubs’ from our school and how much we have grown under Carlos. Just like Carlos I know Jordan is going to do great. Awards! Some of the awards you had no clue who they would go to! I got one for being “Most Creative” and it really made my day, knowing that I have already made such a good

impact on our club. Gabrielle Copeland got member of the year and it was inspiring to see her get up there and shine. Johansen Pico’s speech was so deep and inspiring. I couldn't help myself when Johansen broke into tears it showed how much he loves Key Club, the board our members and how much dedication he has for this club. I started to tear up when he was still making his speech and crying. Johansen is such a good role model and personally I have already learned a lot from him. Last but not least, we showed this years Relay For Life video. Basically, Austin Madriaga made it so that we shared our experience with the rest of the Key Club. Overall, This banquet is a memory that is going to be etched in my brain forever. I got to meet new people and see friends I havn’t seen in awhile. Thank you, to all who went to the banquet. I love making memories with all of us together!
