I hope that all of you continue to go to events, even though the school year is over our service doesn't stop! There are still plenty of events and opportunities in the summer! The events that have happened so far this month are Hershey Track and Field service event, the Leukemia walk and Flightlinez. These are the events that will be in this issue! Also, in this issue I will be featured in Officer spot- light! Members, I want to motivate all of you to try and attend service events during the summer. Giving back to our community is something that should not be seen as a chore; it should be part of our life, and you should be excited and happy to give back to our community! From my experience ser- vice events not only get me closer to every- one in our key club but lets me give back! But I also get to have fun and experience new things at the same time. I get to meet new people, new people that are from dif- ferent Key Clubs and hear people’s stories. What motivates me to keep going to events is not having fun with my friends but to see what I am doing put smiles on other peo- ples faces. To be able to do something for our com- munity gives me a feeling like nothing else. I feel so happy and I get the biggest smile on my face, because I know I helped make a difference. I hope all of you think about doing ser- vice events during the summer. There are events coming up such as volunteering at our schools graduation for the class of 2012, the Solarbration and the volunteer- ing at the Kiwanis Fireworks booth. Now onwards to this issue! Key Leader– a Kiwanis sponsored event for all students and even adults too. When we went there, there were a lot of students that had no correlation to Kiwanis at all. Also there was a lot of kids from California which I was surprised to see. I found out about a new group called kwins. Which was practically key club. When I first arrived I didn't know what to expect. There was a circle of kids doing an ice breaker and other kids playing at the playground. When I dropped off my stuff in my cabin I went to go meet my fellow Key Lead-ers. A lot of people were awkward at first and stayed in there cliques. That was the hardest part of meeting new people. Eventually people started to unwind and everyone started to mingle. At our first workshop we received a booklet. As the workshop continued there was a lot of grouping activities that required you to join someone you didn't know yet. This is one of the ways that our head facilitator tried to get every-one to meet. There was one activity that made us find a bud-dy, your high five buddy. This was a friend who we would break in to groups with a lot. Building more friendships. There were also out neighborhoods. Our main group were we would do most activities you word in the group to name it and come up with a motto and cheer. My group was the KeyVengers. The next day was an activity day where you would go out with a lot of the other neighborhoods and do trust activities. Later that night was community night where we were able to mingle and better get to know each other. Also got the chance to see that some of the other Key Lead-ers including myself cannot sing. It was a great night and very entertaining. Sunday morning and our last day we fin-ished our workshops and had kind of yearbook signing and more time to just spend time with your new family and find ways to keep in touch. All in all this was a great event and I recommend it to any aspiring leaders. I know I'm going back next year!

A Hey Key Club! Write articles and take pictures! Turn them in to me!

Key Leader was a once in a lifetime experience, and one I will cherish for as long as I can remember it. Before I went, I was nerv-ous, I really didn’t know what to expect. Everyone I knew that had went before spoke so incredibly highly of it, they said it was a life changing event. I would always see the

group of kids together at every event, chanting “Key Leader picture!”, or whatever. The fact of the matter is that they were inseparable, truly a fami-ly. So, when I arrived at Camp Lee Canyon, after that ridiculously long drive all the way out to Mt. Charleston I was a sort of in awe. I really had no idea what I was doing. But when I arrived I was greeted so enthusiasti-cally by my old friends, seeing all the faces I didn’t recognize from Califor-nia and Vegas was no longer off-putting. I got my cabin assignment, and just like most people, I’m sure, was at first hesitant to talk to anyone I did not know. But as the weekend progressed, and I was placed into neighbor-hoods, attended workshops, got a high-five buddy, ate food, and even just out relaxing, I made friends. There was not a single person at the end of the weekend for whom I did not feel the upmost affection for. We were a family. We have our own face book page, and although distance separates some of us from the others, the things we learned about ourselves and others, it was hard not to become friends with everyone around. The work-shops you attend really teach you a lot, they help you set goals for yourself, how to properly organize, how to be an active member in the community, and how to properly take the lead in any situation. This is a different sort of leadership however; this is servant leadership, in which leader looks out for the benefit of everyone looking up to him, instead of the other way around. It’s all just really enlightening. There is fun to be had to! You go through various activities promoting teamwork, and after each workshop there are creative ways for everyone to share their interpretations, thoughts and ideas. It’s an incredibly warming and welcoming environment too, it’s very easy to get over that initial embarrassment, but is also very understand-ing for those who are not as outspoken. You’re allowed to write Key Leader grams to everyone throughout the weekend, which are essentially just little notes complimenting a person for being brave and speaking up one day, or that you’re glad you had the opportunity to meet them or anything, honest-ly. And at the end of the last night there’s a huge karaoke session, which essentially boiled down to a dance party for us, but that’s beside the point. It’s nearly impossible to not feel like you have grown and experienced something wonderful at Key Leader, you will miss it, you will miss the peo-ple, and the food and the unblocked view of the night sky and the stars. It’s an amazing experience.

Hershey Track and Field

Hershey Track and Field has recently partnered with Key Club International and they held their first event in Las Vegas on June 9th. Hershey Track and Field is all about the kids and mak-ing sure they are active and leading a healthy life. There were most of the

same events that you would see at any track and field event. The long jump, the 400 and 800 meter dash but instead of shot put they had a competition to see who could throw a softball the farthest. The volunteers helped at this station by measuring the distance the kids threw the ball by running down the field holding a tape measure. The rest of the vol-unteers were either helping at the long jump or the track events. At the long jump volunteers cheered the kids on as the prepared to jump as far as they could and then they measured the distance they jumped. At the track events there were volunteers with a stop watch for each runner on the track who had to be quick to not miss the kids running by. Even though it was really hot outside there was a great turn out. All of the kids were excited to participate and did their best at every event. Hopefully next year more of our members will be able to attend because it is a really great event.

Leukemia & Lymphoma 5k & 1 Mile

Page 5: SOARING HAWKS: VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4

This was the first 5k and 1 mile that the Leu-kemia and Lymphoma Society has held in Southern Nevada and it was a pretty good turnout, runner wise- for their first event. The event was held at Kellogg Zaher Park, where Lite the Nite is held. The track for the race went all the way around the park and even through a short tunnel near the end. There were very few volunteers who attended, but since it was a small event the number we had was just right. They gave us pin on buttons and purple foam fingers when we got there. Krysta and I used the fingers to point runners

in the right direction. Since we found this not very exciting for the runners we started playing K-pop and doing some of the dances to amp up the run-ner’s spirits. We got some applause and a few strange looks, but the danc-ing did help them push forward just a little bit more. Even though the sun was beating down on us the whole time we kept cheering on the runners until the very last one finished. Sadly at the end we had to return the foam fingers, but in a way it was a good thing since it is impossible to drive with one of them on. It was a great event that supported a great cause and I look forward to attending again next year.

The night before this event I watched a youtube video raising awareness about Leuke-mia. I was crying my eyes out during the video and I was even more determined to go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma 5k and 1 mile. I arrived there early in the morning to meet Marcus and then we drove over to where we would be directing the runners/walkers. There were few volunteers but it was a good amount for the amount of participants there were. I was in a really good mood and I want-ed to spread it to the runners! So Marcus played K-pop music on his phone and we

started doing the dances to the songs for the runners get into a happier mood and put a smile on their faces. I started singing you are my sunshine to a couple of the runners while I pointed in the direction they were sup-posed to go. We had these foam hands that were really cool and I wanted to keep it so bad but sadly we had to give it back. On the happy side I had a great time at this event, watching all the determined runners run in the heat and then cheering them on just to see a smile stretch across their fac-es. Volunteers also got to keep their button-pins! It was a fun experience and I have to say that it was a good turn out. I hope that more people par-ticipate next year not only in volunteering but in running or walking. I am so glad that I went to this event.

Just so you know

The Freemont Street Flightlinez in coordination with Vegas PBS was an extraordinary volunteer experience. I was able to engage with tour-ists and locals about the significance of Vegas PBS day. Promoting the fundraising opportunity, I greeted flight lining participants, dis-tributed PBS stickers, helped kids make puppets and capes, and handed out coloring books, bookmarks, and reading logs. With Curi-ous George and a reader presenting children’s books, the kids were ecstatic. I especially loved working with the volunteer staff and event facilitators; their enthusiasm defined the joy of this event. Above the midst of it all, the atmosphere comprised of the sounds of zips and screams as zip liners took their course down into Freemont Street.
