    While for some children/teenagers growing pains can be a mild annoying ache, for others the pain can be quite severe and impact significantly on their ability to participate in sports and their activities of daily living.

    Investigations rarely help with the diagnosis of their pain.Often the advice in the past was to stop any activities that cause pain and the affected child/teenager will eventually grow out of growing pains. However, research shows that this is not always the case.

    Specific examples of growing pains include Osgood Schlatters (knee pain) and Severs disease (heel pain).

    Despite their names, these pains are not a disease, but a reaction to stresses associated with growing.

    As bones grow and become longer at a rapid rate, other structures play a catch up game of lengthening and adapting to the altered shape and size of the bones. This places stress on tendon/bone intersections and at growth plates.

    The added forces of exercise on to the stress of growing bones can be a real problem. Poor teenage posture associated with the use of iphones, ipads and laptops can also contribute to symptom development.

    What can be done?

    Stretching and strengthening the surrounding muscles as well as modifying (not necessarily stopping) aggravating activities.

    However, with more severe cases a course of physiotherapy is beneficial in assisting in controlling the symptoms, as well as teaching the correct type and dosage of stretches, postural correction, and specific strengthening exercises to address muscle imbalances.

    Its not uncommon for women to experience sometimes alarming, painful pelvic sensations that can limit mobility during pregnancy or after giving birth. Known as pelvic girdle pain (PGP), its caused by a gradual or sudden relaxation of the ligaments connecting the bones of the pelvis, says Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinics womens health physiotherapist Tafy Natsa.The newest member of the team at the clinic, Natsa has undertaken postgraduate training in womens health and provides assessment and management of all musculoskeletal concerns, including PGP, during the pre- and post-natal period. She also treats continence issues.Clinic director Justine Barrow, who took ownership of the centre five years ago, has steered the business towards rapid expansion as demand has grown. We now have seven physiotherapists and a hand therapist, Barrow says. Our hand therapist, Tammy Lechte, assesses and treats hand, wrist and finger injuries such as fractures, dislocations

    and tendon issues as well as providing post surgical care. Our services also include clinical Pilates, which is fantastic for women with PGP and for the pre- and post-partum period, as well as for chronic neck, back, pelvic and hip pain. We also provide aquatic physiotherapy treatment at Sunbury and Gisborne, which is very beneficial for those suffering fractures and arthritis as well as post surgery. Podiatry, psychology and remedial massage services are available at the Sunbury clinic.Barrow says the clinic is a quality-endorsed practice, a voluntary undertaking that fosters excellence in all areas of care provision.

    There arent many vehicles that have lasted longer than Volkswagens Beetle; 58 years and 21.5 million made. But one

    that has managed it is yet another Volkswagen the almost as ubiquitous Kombi.

    Would you believe they are only now ceasing production in Brazil?

    The Beetle started down the line in 1945 in postwar Germany, although a handful were built before the unpleasantries, and the last of the Type 1s rolled out of a Mexican factory in June 2003. The Kombi began production late in 1949 and has lasted 64 years.

    It was Volkswagens Dutch importer who first had the idea of building a van based on the Beetle chassis. The company had made several flat-bed delivery vehicles on Beetle running gear to ferry parts around the factory and, inspired by this, he sketched up his idea for a van. It was essentially a big box on wheels. It looked a lot like a Kombi.

    With the same engine as the much smaller Beetle and aerodynamics roughly on a par with Captain Cooks cottage, Kombis were never quick vehicles something well known to the legions of motorists who got stuck behind them as they slowed to a crawl up just about any gradient. Contrary to what some owners swore was fact, surfboards on the roof rack never assisted the aerodynamic profile.

    Nor did replacing the VW logo at the front with a peace symbol.

    Its shape was the Kombis major attraction. It yielded a lot of internal space for its external profile, despite the engine bay taking a large

    whack out of the rear, which meant that even with the generous tail gate, entry to the back was only from the sliding door at the side.

    As Brazilian production halts at the end of the year there will have been 1.6 million

    made there, on top of the 7.9 million made in plants in Austria, Germany, Mexico

    and South Africa. Kombis were assembled here too, along with Beetles, in Volkswagens Clayton plant between 1954 and 1976.

    There have been lots of different Kombis, including a ute, a people

    mover and a delivery van with a raised roof. Camping conversions were plentiful

    and there was even a special build for a hearse. The RAAF once used them as mobile air traffic control towers.

    By far the most sought-after among collectors is the rare 21-window van, with a split windscreen.

    In the 1990s Volkswagen started building Kombis with water-cooled engines, but by then the writing was on the wall.

    Everywhere except Brazil. Brazilians would keep on buying them if they could, but Kombis have been forced out by new safety laws over there effectively bringing an end to forward-control vans, or vans in which the driver sits on top of, or ahead of, the front wheels.

    Brazils special final edition of 1200 units, with retro hubcaps and interior features, will end the Kombi forever. \

    When the weather warms up, refreshing whites and dry ross become the order of the day. Nevertheless, its a given that when Im

    drinking with friends theres always someone who wants to stick to reds.

    When youve sacrificed valuable fridge space to keep the wines cool, a red request can catch you by surprise on a hot summers day.

    So heres my tip. This summer, keep a few bottles of Hunter Valley shiraz handy. Generally low in alcohol (13-14 per cent compared with 15 per cent-plus blockbusters), its medium-bodied so drinks well on a warm day. Plus, savoury tannins hit the spot with meat from the barbecue. The 2011 vintage, which is pretty much the current vintage for most Hunter shirazes, was a cracker, too. I havent come across a bottle yet that is anything but delicious.

    Theres only one problem Hunter Valley shiraz can be hard to track down. It isnt the most popular bottle on the shelf, and on a recent visit to a local chain store I found just two examples.

    The reason for this, according to Hunter Valley winemaker Andrew Thomas, is historic, and much of the explanation lies with the Hunter Valley itself.

    I think the main problem is theres a little hangover of an outdated perception of what Hunter Valley shiraz is. I think the Hunter only has itself to blame for people having that perception, says Thomas.

    He says sloppy winemaking in the past led to microbial problems that are known as brettanomyces, or brett for short. Bretts safe to drink but imparts barnyard and sweaty saddle characters to a wine

    hardly what youre looking for during a romantic meal.I think when those wines were produced people

    werent as educated about wine as they are now and they identified those characters as being a Hunter character, when in fact it was sloppy winemaking, Thomas says.

    Cellars werent set up properly, wine was aged in barrels in tin sheds without proper refrigeration and winemaking didnt have the level of attention to detail that there is these days. The one-percenters that are required to make great shiraz just werent being done.

    Winemaking aside, the Hunter also suffered from an identity crisis. When massive shiraz from the

    Barossa and McLaren Vale was the order of the day, the Hunter tried to compete instead of staying true to its terroir. In the late 80s and 90s, people werent interested in medium-bodied wine, says Thomas. As far as the market, wine shows and a number

    of journalists and opinion-makers were concerned, Australia went through a period of,

    bigger was better.You can force the wines and try and get them

    as ripe as possible and load them up with oak and tweak them [to create a blockbuster], but what you end up doing is making a wine that isnt true to itself and feels forced.

    The style of shiraz coming from our region now is a completely different wine. Theres a lot more freshness, vibrancy and aromatic fruit purity, but without compromising that signature of Hunter Valley shiraz, which is very much medium-bodied with that really savoury tannin structure. \
