Van Elle’s Smartfoot® system is a high quality factory-produced precast modular foundation system, uniquely incorporating post-tensioning technology to connect the beams.

Smartfoot® is a high performance foundation system that is simple and quick to install. Smartfoot® reduces excavation, minimises waste and provides a cost effective solution com-pared to both traditional in-situ foundation solutions and alter-native modular systems.

Key features include:

• Support at every stage of the process - our designers produce

bespoke, efficient designs to meet the project specific require-

ments such as building size, loadings and ground conditions.

• An ideal solution for challenging sites - Smartfoot® can be used

to overcome a wide range of problems such as ground heave,

contaminated ground and other geotechnical issues.

• Van Elle in house assurance - including our designers, our precast

factories in Nottinghamshire and Scotland, owned transport fleet and trained operatives

• Technical benefits enable faster handover - post tensioning en-

sures the beams act as a single high performance unit enabling

efficient final alignment checks for immediate hand-over. No

delay waiting for concrete or other materials to cure.

• Smartfoot® has a proven track record with over 800 completed

projects across the UK, under a wide range of building types and

across highly varied ground conditions.

Features of the Smartfoot System:

Fully certified NHBC and LABC approved QMS certified Factory Production

Cost Effective Cost effective and reduced attendances compared to in-situ techniques Fewer hidden costs compared to rival systems Less on site storage of plant and materials

Flexible Specific design for each plot, integrated with pil-ing solution—allows optimised pile layout, beam span & cross section Increased flexibility (increased tolerances) com-pared to competitor precast systems

Advantages Smartfoot® Inverted Tee Beam Systems Rectangular Ground Beam Systems

Bespoke System

All Smartfoot® beams are designed and manufactured to project specific require-ments. This allows greater efficiency from the beam and longer spans can be achieved.

Beams are manufactured in a range of standard sizes. Project beam lengths are achieved by connecting beams with nominally rein-forced wet cast joints. This limits the load bearing capacity of the beam.

Project specific beam design. However, beams are installed 'simply supported'. Simply supported installation reduces the efficiency of the system.

Installation Specialists

Van Elle site teams are directly employed and are specialists in Smartfoot® Installa-tion. The teams are experienced and trained to specific standards across a range of in-stallations and applications.

Majority of installations are by sub con-tract teams. The risk is the variability in experience and quality.

Reduced Enabling Works

The post piling working platform is set to the underside of the groundbeam. The Smartfoot® team locally excavates for the pile caps, this greatly reduces the total excavation required.

The post piling working platform is set to the underside of the pile cap. The Client will have to undertake addi-tional excavation to facilitate this before reinstating the excavated material.

The post piling working platform is typi-cally set at 300-500mm below the un-derside of the ground beam. The Client will have to undertake addi-tional excavation to facilitate this before reinstating the excavated material.

Cost Assured

Utilising insitu pile caps allows Smartfoot® to tolerate a higher level of pile inaccuracy. This significantly reduces the need for remedial work.

Employs a relatively small precast pile cap. This requires high accuracy of piling or more typically, increased remedial work.

This system installs beams directly on top of the piles. To achieve this the piles have to be installed to reduced toleranc-es or a bespoke pile cap will have to be installed. The bespoke pile caps incur additional cost and delays.

Accuracy Utilising an insitu cast pile cap allows greater level accuracy to be achieved.

The system employs a precast pile cap, grouted in place. Level accuracy per cap can be difficult which may lead to sloping beams and difficulties for follow on trades.

The system relies on accurate pile cut off levels. Level accuracy per cut off can be difficult which may lead to sloping beams and difficulties for follow on trades.

Rapid Installation

Smartfoot® is installed utilising a mobile crane. This allows a quick and safe installation method. Several plots / large lengths of beams can be installed from one location.

The System is installed using an excava-tor. This can limit the weight and size of beams that can be handled. If inappropriate excavators are employed leading to unsafe activities or programme delays.

Similar to Smartfoot® the system utilises a mobile crane.

Efficient Smartfoot® is manufactured and deliv-ered in accordance with the installation sequence. The beams are installed directly from the delivery trailer. This reduces site conges-tion, potential damage and speeds up installation.

The system is installed by an excavator. The beams are unloaded from the deliv-ery to a lay down area before installation. Double handling the beams slows down the process.

The beam is secured to the pile via a resin connection whilst slung from a crane. This significantly slows down the instal-lation during the most expensive stage.

Innovative Smartfoot® beams are post tensioned with a 7 strand Dyform steel cable. The cable allows the beams to act as a single unit; which provides enhanced moment capacity, allowing greater pile tolerances to be accommodated.

The beams are connected with nominally reinforced wet cast joints. This limits the moment capacity of the system resulting in increased number of remedial actions required.

Each beam is drilled and doweled at both ends into the supporting pile. This can be time consuming and requires greater pile accuracy to avoid remedial works.

Buildability The Smartfoot® beam provides a flat, level surface similar to traditional meth-ods. This is easy for follow on trades to under-stand, also providing a simple section for drainage and other services.

The inverted 'T' shaped beam aims to reduce 1 course of blockwork on the in-ner leaf of external walls. This can create complicated details where services enter the building. The beam also has the potential for cold bridging between the internal wall and the floor.

Similar to Smartfoot® the system pro-vides a flat, level surface.
