A smart product is characterized

by an intelligent sensing

technology that is being

increasingly integrated with

Internet technologies, thereby

allowing the product to react to

and communicate with the

changing environment around it.

This leads to optimal operations

and improvements in efficiency.

What is Smart?Smart is the new green; smart products and technologies can be segmented into 3 levels

Smart City • India is in the nascent stage

of building basic brick and

steel infrastructure, with major gaps

in urban interlinkages.

• This decade, the country’s

focus will be on building well-instrumented

brick and steel infrastructure

that will be conducive for

future retrofitting, integration, and data analytics capabilities.

Levels of Smart Infrastructure

India’s Road to Smart CitiesIndia will use technology to leapfrog over the western models of building basic brick and steel and push straight to creating automated brick and steel, setting the precedent for future smart cities

Smart hubs are theme-based

projects, such as electronic

cities and heritage cities, which

will have smart elements to

them.

These are

existing cities

that are made

“smart” by

technological

interventions.

These are new large cities that

are built from scratch; for

example, Palava smart city and

Wave smart city. Some re-

development activities can be

regarded as greenfield.

The city planner allows any qualified company or business organization to build city infrastructure and provide city services. However, the city planner will impose some regulatory obligations.

The smart city planner appoints a trusted partner to develop the city infrastructure and services. The partner operates and manages the smart city services. The city planner plays no further role. Most PPPs are built on this model.

The smart city planner appoints a trusted partner to build the city infrastructure and provide smart city services for a particular area within a time period. After completion, the operation is handed over to the smart city planner.

The smart city planner independently builds the city infrastructure and delivers smart city services. The operation and the maintenance of the services are fully under the planner’s control.
