Department, I Komang Sumaryana Putra, S.S., M.Hum as my academic

me. Thank to my beloved boyfriend Suardana and my best friends Tanti, Endah,

Department, thanks for the experiences, togetherness, and the lovely moments in

ABSTRACT

The title of this study is Slangs Used in Movie “The Hangover”. The

aims of this study are to identify the types of slang, to classify the word

formations in creating slangs, and to describe the literal and figurative meanings

of slang words are spoken by the characters in the movie “The Hangover”.

The data of this study were collected from the movie entitled “The

Hangover” co-produced and directed by Todd Phillips. Documentation method

was used to collect the data and qualitative method was used to describe the slang

types, the word formations in creating slangs, and the literal and figurative

meanings of slangs that used by the characters in “The Hangover” movie. The

writer used the theory of the types of slang by Allan and Burridge in order to

identify the types of slang. In addition, the theory of word formations by Yule was

used to classify the word formations in creating slangs in this movie. Then,

Hayes’s approach that discussed about literal and figurative meaning was applied

in this study to describe the literal and figurative meanings of slang words that

found in “The Hangover” movie.

There are five types of slangs which are found in this study such as eight

slang words in fresh and creative type, seven in flippant type, sixteen slang words

in imitative type, one slang word in acronym type, and six slang words in clipping

type are spoken by the entire characters in this movie. Then, there are ten word

formations that proposed by Yule but there are only five word formations are

found by the writer in this movie; eleven in compounding, three in blending, six in

clipping, one in acronym, and one in multiple processes and dominated by

compounding. There are no coinage, borrowing, back formation,conversion, and

derivation which are found in this movie. Next, this study found that the meanings

of each slang word in this movie is not only based on dictionaries but also based

on the context of situation and the participants when the slang is used. Besides,

slang words that found are mostly used in informal situation by people who know

each other well. Then, every slang word has different meaning either literally or

figuratively.
