Level Crossing

The system ISIS-LC is an active level crossing protection system assembled from off-the-shelf components complemented with elements developed especially for railway applications (signal heads, barrier drives and automatic control).

The use of state-of-the-art and approved components for industrial and railway applications warrants high reliability and long-term availability.

The core of the crossing control system for safety tasks is expandable both centrally and peripheral. This enables so far unknown flexibility and customised adaptations of the system without costly reassessments.

ISIS-LC is designed to lower both investment and life cycle costs of an active level crossing protection system. This is why ISIS-LC is constructed for low maintenance and enables easy replacement of components. The safety concept of ISIS-LC is based on Fail-Safety-Principles („Safety by Redundancy“ and “Safety by Safe Fail-Reaction”). All single failures are detected and lead to a safe reaction of the protection system (e.g. the failure of a LED chain of a road warning device is compensated by a second LED chain. The failure is detected immediately by the integrated monitoring).

Level Crossing Control UnitThe core element of the system – the main controller – is a safety oriented programmable logic controller. The main controller carries out all control and supervisory tasks of the system. The conditions for the activation and monitoring of the road warning devices, gates, blocking devices, the dependency to activate the protection signals, the monitoring of the voltage supply, the logic of manual control, as well as the analysis of the automatic control are key functionalities defined in the software of the main controller. In addition the main controller records all events, errors, and incidents and offers comprehensive diagnostics. In accordance to the required Safety and Availability Levels the main controller is compiled of one or two sets of PLC. In all designs all safety relevant tasks are performed by at least two channels in parallel. Only if both compute the same result a safety related task is carried out by the system. Otherwise a safe state will be entered. The power supply of the system is battery backed. It comprises highly reliable components of industrial grade. The main controller continuously supervises all power supply components, checking both system voltage and battery capacity. The battery capacity check is performed under load in regular intervals. The mains supply voltage can either be 230VAC or 110VAC fed by one or two redundant sources.

LED-Road Warning DevicesISIS-LC is based on the use of low power LED-signal heads that are activated and monitored by the level crossing control unit. The LED-signal heads are built with two channels to maintain the functionality even in case of the failure of a single LED or a complete chain. The monitoring of the functionality is carried out directly inside the LED-signal head. The status is transmitted to the main controller using standardised analogue or digital signals. The LED-signal head allows a variety of additional features for country-specific adaptions such as various levels of illuminous intensity.

BarriersElectromechanical barrier drives are used. The main controller and the corresponding power stages perform the activation, control of opening and closing as well as the supervision of the barrier position. The barrier drive is available in different options and is configured according to the specific requirements (i.e. with or without closing by gravity).

Automatic ControlIn order to detect approaching trains and automatically control the protection system, wheel sensors Frauscher RSR180 or RSR123 in combination with axle counting system ACS2000 or FAdC are used. The axle counting system transmits all relevant data to the main controller via digital I/O or Ethernet using a fail-safe protocol. The main controller evaluates the information, generated by the axle counting system and initiates or terminates the warning of the road users accordingly. Automatic control can be adapted according to the specific customer‘s requirements. ISIS-LC makes use of the additional features such as counting head control in order to eliminate external influences. Supervisory sections are also used in order to reduce the effects of single wheel sensor fault.

Monitoring ISIS-LevelCrossing protection systems can be monitored in several ways. Either locally by operating personnel via manual control panels or remotely by an interlocking system or a dispatcher or as third option using trackside signals indicating the status of the level crossing to the train driver. Trackside signals are also based on LED signal heads. According to national legislation and operating rules the number of signal heads, their colour and the respective signal aspects can be configured.

PlanInterfacesThe level crossing control unit features a flexible parallel interface for connecting the level crossing system to an interlocking system or other active level crossings.The parallel interface to interlocking systems includes single or redundant digital inputs and outputs. The behaviour of each input and output is adjustable (impulse or switch, impulse duration, tolerance between the redundant channels, etc.) in order to adapt the interface to the interlocking technology in use.The parallel and serial interfaces to adjacent level crossings enables the transmission of all required information for forwarding automatic control information and level crossing status messages for monitoring. This allows the joint use of wheel sensors and trackside signals, minimizing costs and efforts for civil works.The serial interface can also be linked to a remote monitoring device, transmitting the status of the level crossing and receiving commands for controlling the level crossing. In terms of long-range data communication Ethernet based routers are added to the level crossing control unit. Thus safe communication can be realized with a variety of technologies (i.e. radio, fibre optics). Safety of the serial communication is ensured by an EN50159 certified protocol.

DiagnosticsAn integrated diagnostic PC provides all required information for maintenance and fault clearance on-site to the maintenance personnel. The diagnostic PC can be connected to higher level diagnostic- or remote control systems using communication channels such as GSM, GPRS, or Ethernet. By default ISIS-LC is equipped with an integrated GSM/GPRS-Modem to enable transmission of malfunction information via SMS and E-mail and access to remote maintenance. Forwarding using SMS and Email is defined centrally for each attachment and can be directed to different addressees depending on message and attachment.
