EXTRACT FROM SIGNALLING

REGULATIONS 1904.

SEMAPHORE .

This system is an adaptation of that used in the Royal Navy,

in which the letters of the alphabet, numerals and special signsare indicated by the relative positions of two revolving arms to

< one another and to a third fixed arm called the “indicator.”~ The former are mounted on a common pivot and are

~2arranged so that both revolve in a vertical plane. The circle~ described by one complete revolution of the arms may be

~ imagined to be divided into eight equal parts, each giving a0 separate radial position for the arms, which when forming a~ sign are never less than 45 degrees apart. When not signalling

~3both arms hang vertically downwhrds in the 1st position.c c Before commencing to signal the indicator is shown either on— the right or left of the upri~lctstandard carrying the whole~ apparatus; its use is to indIcate from which side the signs

~ commence.

The first seven lettersA to G are made by keeping one armin the 1st position and moving theother to the remaining sevenpositions, starting always on the sanie side as the indicator and

moving in the same direction as the hands of the clock throughsuccessive angles of 45 degrees. The next six letters H to N

omitting J are made by moving one aria to the 2nd position

or letter A , keeping it there, and moving the other as before tothe remaining six positions. The letters 0 to S are niade bymoving the stationary arm to the 3rd position  or lett4~r13 and

moving the revolving one to the remaining five positions. The

letters T and U are made on the same prineiple. The remainingletters and special signs do not follow this sequence but are

made in a sin’ilar manlier  vide diagram . The same signs areused for the numerals 1 to 0 as ftr the letters A to K  omitting

J but are distinguished from the latter by being preceded bythe “numeral sign “ equivalent to El on the Morse system andfollowed by the “alphabetical sign”  equivalent to FE on the

Morse system . They are checked by the clock-check, i.e., by

being repeated back.

When sending words, groups, etc., the arnis are moved from

letter to letter and are both brought in to the let position on

completion of the word. The apparatus as used in the Royal Navy may have arms U I

to 12 feet in length, and is mounted in some conspicuous position. It is worked from the deck by crankhandles arranged so as to

correspond to the positions of the arms they operate ; tileapparatus may be trained in any direction. Semaphores con-structed and worked on these hues are very useful for main-taining communication between fixed points, such as along a

line of blockhouses and coast defence forts, and they possess theadvantage of being easily arranged so as to be worked from

Un ler cover. In the field this rapid aiid simple means of signalling is

usefully employed at short distances such as between columnsand their advanced or rear guards, across rivers, defiles, or fireswept zones, and to connect an attacking line with its supports.

Under these circumstances the signaller’s arms are used inaccordance with the above principles, and in order that they

may be more readily seen, a conspicuous object such as ahandkerchief or small flag may be held in each hand the placeof the indicator is taken by arranging that the parties in

communication always face one another. At drill and generallyspeaking, signallers will use the small flags described for usewith theMorse system under “Flags.”

The simplest method of learning the alphabet s.nd other signsis bycircles, thus

let Circle. A to G.2nd   II to N, omitting J.3rd   0 to S.4th ~ T, U, Y and “Annul.”5th   “Numeral Sign,” J  or “Alphabetical Sign”

and V.6th   W and X and7th   Z.

At drill, in the let circle, the letters A to D will be madewith the right arm and E to G with the left; in the remaining

circles the right arm will be kept stationary at the positionindicated by the number of tile circle, e.g. 0 will be made by

putting the right arm to the 3rd position or the letter B, andthe left to C; to make P from 0, the right arm will be kept

still and the left moved to 1 .When letters follow one another, as in a word or group, time

flags will not be brought back in front of the body after each

letter, but if an arm is already in position to form or assist toform the next it will be kept steady. Thus, to send the word“can,” the right arm is first placed at C and after a slight pause

brought down toA and kept steady, and after a similar slightpause the left is placed at G which with the right at A

forms the next letter required, viz., N.

‘~vVheunot at drill the letters should be formed with thearms as found most convenient; thus in sending the word

“who,” the0 may be made from the H either by moving botharms through 45 degrees or by keeping the one at B steady and

moving that at A to C. But in makin~ letters where only one

arm is used that arm should not be brought across the body;thus in making the letter C alone, the right should beemployed.

SE~ . fAPROREDR ILL .

The following points must be carefully attended to both atdrill and when actually sending messages.

1. The signaller must stand exactly facing the station he issending to.

2. The flags must not be thrown to the rear andmust be heldat the full extent of the arms and in exact prolongation ofthem.

3 . The arms must be p’aced at the exact positions indicatingtheletters, signs, etc.

4 When making the letters T, 0, W, and the numeral signthe flags must be separated and not covering one another.

5. The signaller should turn slightly on the hips when

making such letters as I, X, etc., but the eyes mi~stcontinueto look straight to the front.

6. When double letters occ~1rthe flags are to be brought wellinto the body after the first letter is made.

7 The flags are to be kept unfurled and to be moved quicklyfrom one letter or sign to the next; a pause is to be made onthe letter or sign according to the rate of sending.

8. When sending is going on everyone except the signallermust stand clear of the flags.

9 Both flags should be of the same colour.

FALL I NG IN AND OPEN ING TN E RANKS.

The squad will fall in and the ranks opened as in Flag drillwith the Morse system. The flags will be held perpendicularly,

one in each hand, grasping the pole about 6 inches from thebutt.

PREPARE TO S I GNAL .

r Carry the left foot about 10 inches to thePrepare to   left, at the same time drop the flags in front ofSignal.   the legs at the full extent of the arms, the

1~rightpole crossed over the left.
