1. First Steps with SIMATIC PDM

What are you going to learn?

The following exercise will show you how simple it is to create a network configuration and subsequently process the devices in SIMATIC PDM.

In this example, you will create a SIMATIC PDM configuration with a PROBE LU. Detailed instructions will lead you step by step through the creation of a network and SIMATIC PDM operation.

Things you will need

You will need a copy of SIMATIC PDM, a HART Modem, the proper device driver, and a field instrument which is HART Compatible. If you are using the MACTECH Viator you can get the device driver at https://www.mactekcorp.com/download.php#software.

2. Creating a Project

Starting the SIMATIC PDM program

1. Start SIMATIC PDM by clicking on the desk top icon.

3. Creating a Project

Proceed as follows to create a new project:

1. Select File New

2. Enter the name for the project. In this example Probe LU ex was chosen. Verify that the “Project” option is selected and not “Library”.

a. Notice that there is also a library of previous projects available to choose from under “User projects”. Project parameters can be saved for future use and uploaded to a device. This is not important for getting started but is a benefit if the user plans to use SIMATIC PDM in the future.

3. Confirm the creation of the project by selecting “OK”.

4. Selecting the View in the SIMATIC PDM Manager

You can choose between the following views:

The Process Device Plant View provides a quick overview of the configured process devices. You can configure devices without any network assignment.

NOTE: Process Device Plant View is only applicable if you have a license for more than 1 tag.

The Process Device Network View shows the process devices grouped according to their network topology. You can configure process devices in this view and so for this example it will be used.

The black dot next to the option indicates that it is selected.

NOTE: You can make a default setting which determines which view is displayed when SIMATIC PDM is opened. If you are using the standalone SIMATIC PDM or are configuring the networks in the SIMATIC Manager, use the Process Device Plant View as the default. To set the default select the menu command Options Customize then select the view tab.

6. Assigning the COM Port

1. To set the COM port to the proper location we need to check which COM port the HART modem is using on the PC. Navigate to “Device Manager” on your PC. Click “Start” then click on “Control Panel”.

Page 16: Siemens Simatic PDM V8.2 - Gilson Engineering … Manuals/Siemens/SIMATIC PDM... · Web viewMore advanced echo processing is available in SIMATIC PDM such as Auto False Echo Suppression

2. Select “Device Manager”. Once inside Device Manage double click “Ports COM and LPT”. This will now display the COM port which the HART Modem is assigned to. As you can see the HART Modem is assigned to COM5. This will need to correspond to the selection in PDM.

NOTE: “Device Manager” may not indicate COM port 5 is being used. Because the COM port is randomly assigned it may change from time to time.

NOTE: If the HART Modem is not listed under “Ports Com LPT”, this indicates that you do not have the proper device driver. See What you will need section.

7. Inserting HART Devices

If you need to configure more than a single unit for a project, you will have to purchase the expansions required to do this.

To insert the desired HART devices, proceed as follows:

1. Once the proper COM Port is selected, right click on the “communication network” icon, labeled HART Modem in this example. Select “insert New Object” then “Object”.

3. Left click on “Device Identification” at the bottom center of the dialogue box. This will automatically select the proper device. Once you have selected the proper instrument for your application click “OK”.

NOTE: If SIMATIC PDM cannot select the proper instrument this is an indication that you do not have the proper driver or the improper COM port is selected.

1. The values displayed in the right-hand section of the window are NOT the current values but come from the DDL that you selected. Click on “Device” then select “Upload to PG/PC”. This will upload the information from the instrument to the PC. It is important to do this so that you can see all of parameters for the device.

Viewing Echo ProfilesIf using SIMATIC PDM to commission an echo or radar level device, viewing the echo profile can be a very powerful tool for trouble shooting. The following steps will show you how to view the echo profile in SIMATIC PDM 8.2.

1. After the field instrument is connected to the PC (uploading the field instruments parameters to the PC) you can left click on “Device” which will create a drop down menu. Then select “Echo Profile Utilities”.

Page 29: Siemens Simatic PDM V8.2 - Gilson Engineering … Manuals/Siemens/SIMATIC PDM... · Web viewMore advanced echo processing is available in SIMATIC PDM such as Auto False Echo Suppression

2. A dialogue box will open titled “Echo Profile Utilities”. Click on the “Measure” button. This will take a snap shot of the echo in the vessel.NOTE: This will take the field instrument out of service for a moment. If you have the unit as part of a control loop, clicking “Measure” will affect the loop.

Page 30: Siemens Simatic PDM V8.2 - Gilson Engineering … Manuals/Siemens/SIMATIC PDM... · Web viewMore advanced echo processing is available in SIMATIC PDM such as Auto False Echo Suppression

3. Once measurement is completed an image of the echo profile will appear, still in the “Echo Profile Utilities” dialogue box. This is the snapshot of the vessel or the echo profile.

The TVT = Time Varying Threshold. This provides a reference line for comparing echoes in different positions in time. The TVT is the red line in the above image. Near and far echoes must be compared to determine the true echo.

Echo Profile = a graphic representation of the reflected echo received by the transducer. This is the blue line in above image. To read the profile, start at the left side which represents the top of the vessel, and move across. Upward spikes indicate echoes and strength in decibels. These can be true or false echoes.

More advanced echo processing is available in SIMATIC PDM such as Auto False Echo Suppression and manual TVT Shaping. If you are doing more than just viewing the echo profile please contact your local Siemens Rep for assistance.
