“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.”
July 26, 2009 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Michigan Catholic Radio Michigan Catholic Radio (MCR), 1090 on your AM radio, will cease broadcasting on Friday July 31. The 1090 AM station has
been sold and the new owners are looking at totally different programming. The National Shrine of the Little Flower has had a long and cooperative relationship with MCR. MCR has provided the free broadcast time, and the National Shrine
has provided the Mass. “Live from the Shrine” provided the live broadcast of daily Mass at 8:30 am in the morning, Monday through Friday.
I am amazed by the outreach the broadcast of the Mass has had. Many
people have commented that they listen to Mass on the radio both at home and in the car on the way to work. One woman wrote that she listened to Mass from Shrine on her way to church to attend Mass in her parish church. She said that she
would compare homilies and always seemed to like the ones from Shrine better, especially when the school children were involved. We even received comments from Europe from
people who listened to Mass from Shrine via the MCR internet connection.
Until another solution can be found, Mass from the Shrine will cease to be broadcast as of August 1. We are presently investigating live audio and
possibly video web casting of Mass on a daily basis via our parish website. As soon as it is up and running, we will advise you through the Herald. You can also get up to date information on the web casting v i a t h e p a r i s h w e b s i t e a t
www.shrinechurch.com. Those with computers would be able to tune into the Mass everyday of the week including Sundays.

CSA As of this past week, there were 1,163 cards returned. The pledges from these cards amounted to
$179,532.73 which is 86% of our target for this year. It is advantageous for us to reach and surpass our target. Within the next 2 weeks, a reminder letter will be sent to all those who have not yet responded.

Another Family has a Home….Thanks to You! The Schoolers are now in their completely furnished apartment home. They asked me to convey their thanks to all of you who provided furnishings and help. The move only happened because others of you provided the truck and the manpower on two different weekends to collect and deliver the many items needed to create a home. Someone, who did not have extra furniture to give, donated cash to help us get what was still needed. If you offered goods that we were not able to use for these families, I hope you will find someone else who needs what you have.
To the dedicated members of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference here at the
National Shrine, the Knights of Columbus and the Squires, and all the generous parish members, may your goodness continue to bear fruit for the life of others. You help us see the commandments of God in living color! God bless you!

Heed the Urgings...Your Blood is Needed If you can give blood, please come to the National Shrine Conference Center between the hours of 1 and 7 pm on Monday, August 3. Shrine Catholic High School student, Jonathan Jaeger, is the Coordinator of this Red Cross Blood Drive, and we are very grateful.
Last time the Blood Drive was held in the National Shrine Conference Center, there was an inspiring sight. There on one table was a 16 year old Shrine Catholic student giving her first pint of blood and on adjacent tables were Bill and Eileen Bolton, now in their mid-80s, giving their precious gift of blood so that others will live.

Pilgrimage The Shrine pilgrimage to the Holy Land still has available spaces for a few more pilgrims. People do not have to be members of the parish to go on the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage will take place October 10 to 25, and will visit all the biblical sites in
Jordan, Israel, and the occupied territories. Hotels are all first class. All but 12 lunches are included. Flights will be to and from Detroit via Air France. Mass will be celebrated on a daily basis for those wishing to attend.
This is a once in a life-time opportunity to make a spiritual pilgrimage to the land where Jesus lived and taught. For more information consult the parish website or look for the brochures in the vestibules or at the parish office.
Parish Dream Cruise Party It is less than three weeks away. Plan to attend the Parish Party on Friday evening, August 14. It is a great time to get together with your fellow parishioners and have a good time. Dream Cruise is Saturday, August 15. It is also the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Normally August 15 is a Holy Day of Obligation. However, since it falls on a Saturday we are not obliged to attend Mass.
This happens when Holy Days other than Christmas and the Immaculate Conception fall on a Saturday or Monday. The dispensation from Mass attendance has nothing to do with the Dream Cruise.
Rosie & Carlito Last week, Rosie was out at the lake a couple of times. We got a new supply of bright green tennis balls for her to retrieve from the lake. While I was tied up trying to help mom with some household chores, Rosie simply recruited the neighbors to
throw the ball out into the lake for her. At one point as I was working on mom’s computer, I heard cries of help coming from the lake. I ran outside to see Rosie way out in the lake trying to get onto a kayak with one of the neighbor’s visitors. Thankfully, Rosie came immediately when called and the kayaker was laughing about the dog that wanted a kayak ride.
Summer Choir Underway From now until Labor Day weekend, the Summer Choir will offer music at the 10:45 am Mass on Sundays; all singers of the parish are encouraged to consider participating in this opportunity, which requires less work and time than
participation in the Parish Choir. The Summer Choir rehearses each Sunday morning at 9:30 am in the Undercroft Choir Room, accessible via the northeast and southeast vestibules of the church. For more information about the Summer Choir, please contact Rob Abbott at 248.541.122 ext. 442, or [email protected].
Taize Evening Prayer Due to the enthusiastic reception of this year's series of Evening Prayer
services with music from Taize, we will continue to offer them on a year-round basis, third Monday of the month at 7:30 pm. or the summer, those dates are: June 15, July 20 and August 17. For more information about Evening Prayer with music from Taize, please contact Rob Abbott at 248.541.4122 ext. 442, or [email protected].

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
"...it is God who gives Himself, taking man up into HIs
action and enabling him to be both gift and recipient."
"In order that what happened then may become
present now, the words 'This is my Body-this is my Blood'
must be said. But the speaker of these words is the 'I' of
Jesus Christ. Only He can say them; they are His
words. No man can dare to take to himself the 'I' and 'My' of Jesus
Christ--and yet the words must be said if the saving mystery is not to
remain something in the distant past. So authority to pronounce
them is needed, an authority no one can assume and which no
congregation, nor even many congregations together, can
confer. Only Jesus Christ Himself, in the 'sacramental' form he has
committed to the whole Church, can give this authority. The word
must be located, as it were, in sacrament; it must be part of the
'sacrament' of the Church, partaking of an authority which she does
not create, but only transmits. This is what is meant by 'ordination'
and 'priesthood'. Once this is understood, it becomes clear that, in
the Church's Eucharist, something is happening which goes far
beyond any human celebration, any human joint activity, and any
liturgical efforts on the part of a particular community. What is
taking place is the mystery of God, communicated to us by Jesus
Christ through His death and resurrection. This is what makes the
Eucharist irreplaceable; this is the guarantee of its identity. "
- Pope Benedict XVI, Benedictus

Shrine Catholic Athletes Sports Physicals
Attention Grades 5 through 12, students who will be playing sports for Shrine Catholic Grade School, Shrine Catholic Academy, or Shrine Catholic High School in the fall or winter (this would include soccer, football, basketball, volleyball or cheerleading), the Dad’s Club will have a pediatrician who will be doing sports physicals on four evenings in July.
The physicals will be done at Shrine Catholic High School from 6 to 9 pm on Tuesday, July 21; Wednesday, July 22; Tuesday, August 4; and Wednesday, August 5. Athletes should enter the west doors of the high school (signs will be posted). There will be a $20 fee per athlete (all money will go into the Dad’s Club fund, so checks should be made out to “Shrine Dad’s Club”). Students should wear a tee shirt and shorts. They should bring their green physical form (if they are Shrine Catholic Grade School or Shrine Academy Students) they received at the sports “call out” in May or the high school sports physical form (if they are Shrine Catholic High School students) they received in the packet which was mailed to them. If they do not have the form, forms will be available. Parents should fill out the front side of the athlete’s form (please include the immunization record).
Sign up sheets will be available on a first-come-first serve basis beginning on the first night. For further information, please contact Tom Proscheck at 248.549.2409 or Kevin Carr at 248.549.7302.

Life Matters Immediate Action Alert from Right to Life of Michigan: Congress is currently at work to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill and we need to make sure that health care reform legislation doesn't make abortion a mainstream health care service. Letters to the editor of community newspapers and letters to our U.S. Senators and U.S. House Members are needed. Prolife groups are worried that the administration and Congress will use health care reform as a way to insure that abortion on demand, paid with tax dollars, is the law of the
land. Abortion is not health care. It is a procedure which intentionally takes the life of an innocent human being. We have to let our representatives know that it is unacceptable for abortion to become part of mainstream health care reform. Below is a sample letter for you to use. Please urge our lawmakers to explicitly exclude abortion from the scope of any government-defined or government mandated package of health care services. (For more information/samples see www.rtl.org)
President Obama has repeatedly claimed to general audiences
that he wants to reduce the number of abortions performed in our
country. Yet he also favors a policy that directly leads to more
abortions: abortions funded by tax dollars. He promised Planned
Parenthood the first thing he would do as president would be to sign
radical legislation known as the Freedom of Choice Act to abolish laws
which limit abortion. The drive to pass the Freedom of Choice Act has
withered as prolifers loudly voiced their strong opposition to this
legislation.
Currently, a draft of legislation by three committees in the House of
Representatives has been put forward as a way of reforming health
care in our country. This legislation has been labeled the Tri-Committee
health care legislation. If this legislation passes as drafted, it would give
a “Health Benefits Advisory Committee” along with the Secretary of
Health and Human Services the authority to decide what services
would have to be covered by both public and private health care
plans.
If this legislation passes as drafted, it would most assuredly result in
abortion becoming a service which both private and public plans
would have to cover. Without a specific clause which explicitly
excludes abortion, this legislation would quickly be used to force
taxpayers to subsidize abortion and force private insurance companies
to cover abortion.
Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions
July 2009 General: That the Christians of the Middle East may live their faith in
full freedom and be an instrument of peace and reconciliation. Mission: That the Church may be the seed and nucleus of a
humanity reconciled and reunited in God's one and only family, thanks to the testimony of all the faithful in every country in the
world.

Conversion and the Crisis of Faith is a
book that is a joint effort of Fr. C. John McCloskey III and Russell Shaw. "Father McCloskey has become a famous 'convert maker' in the powerful corridors close to the White House and various government agencies. Having run the
well-known Catholic Information Center in the heart of Washington D. C. . . . he is perhaps best known for guiding (along with many others) such luminaries as Dr. Bernard Nathanson [former notorious abortion doctor], Lawrence Kudlow,
Senator Sam Brownback, Laura Ingraham, Robert Novak into the Catholic Church. Russell Shaw is a well known Catholic author who contributes to numerous publications, religious and secular." The book is "a feast for

degree…Let someone else volunteer…I’m not a teacher…I
don’t even have kids…I don’t know the first thing about
being a catechist…Remember the leap of faith that the apostles took when Jesus called them - He doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called! We have openings in the preschool, elementary and middle school levels.
If you are ready to say, “Here I am”, or if you just have some questions, call the Office of Religious Formation at 2 4 8 . 5 4 1 . 5 1 3 3 o r e m a i l J a n i e L y n c h a t [email protected].

To help raise money for our mission trip and our trip to World Youth Day Cross Connections is collecting old cell phones (no accessories) and used ink jet cartridges (no laser or toner cartridges please). If you have any donations please drop them off in the marked box at the top of the stairs leading to the Youth Room. Also, if you would like to donate money for our trip to World Youth Day you can do so by visiting the donations page at www.shrinechurch.com and selecting “World Youth Day.” All donations will go towards Cross Connections High School Youth Ministry’s trip to Madrid, Spain in August of 2011. Thank you for your generous donations!

The Catholic Information Service
The Catholic Information is now offering mp3 audio files of lessons from the Luke E. Hart Series. The free series, funded by the Knights of Columbus and based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, answers the questions:
1. What does a Catholic believe?
2. How does a Catholic worship?
3. How does a Catholic live?
A total of 30 lessons, which run in the 30-40 minute range, are offered at http://www.kofc.org/un/eb/en/
publications/cis/podcasts/hart/index.html (or go to www.kofc.org and follow the links). You can listen to them online or download them to your home computer. Burned onto a CD, they make great listening for quiet times at home or during a commute. A pdf version of each lesson is also available for those who prefer to read the material.

A Family Perspective
In today’s Gospel, a child shared his little lunch and thousands were fed, proof that
the smallest act of sharing can have great significance. There
are people in our lives who are starving for attention, understanding, and affection. The Gospel is clear: when we share ourselves, miracles happen. Take time
to be miraculous. - by Bud Ozar
A Mission: Possible Moment All four Gospels describe the feeding of the five thousand–not counting women and children. No other miracle in Jesus’ public life gets that much attention in the Gospels. What really happened that warm afternoon? Why did Jesus do it? If we know anything about Jesus, we
know it wasn’t to get attention. Articles, homilies, and books upon books have been written, reflecting upon the meaning of this Gospel. Perhaps one crucial meaning for my life as a lay ecclesial minister is simply that Jesus fed everyone who came to him. The feeding of the five thousand was a sign of God’s overflowing, incomprehensible, ever-present, unconditional, com-passionate love. And the meaning of food here is more than for our bodies; it’s for our souls, our spirits. God will never allow us to starve on our journey. God comes to us as food in Jesus. God also,
in the mystery, has designed that we feed one another through our loving presence and care. Each of us does that daily; those called to ministry are privileged to do that in the core of who they are.

FLOWER: Families Live Out the
Word in Everyday Routines …have them recline…then Jesus took the
loaves, gave thanks, and distributed
them to those who were reclining…
God created us as individuals but also as a communal people. We live together as families–our immediate family, extended family, neighborhood family, faith family and ultimately world family. Perhaps the most profound communal
activity is sharing a meal together. We gather together, give thanks, break bread and share our food, our stories, our support, and our presence. We do this in our homes and we do this in our parishes.
We trust God’s presence and we recognize that his providence is operating in our lives at all times.
