Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton

Back Up From Down Under We arrived home last Tuesday night after about 29 hours of flying and running through airports. We left at 3 am Tuesday in Australia and arrived home around 7 pm Tuesday here in Royal Oak. It was a long Tuesday. A good number of us got off the plane coming down with colds as a result of the Australian winter and a long dose of re-circulated air on the plane. It was a small price to pay for a great experience. The all night vigil with Eucharistic adoration in the park with almost a million people was an awesome experience. This huge group of mostly young people adoring Jesus present in the Eucharist in reverent silence in the middle of the night was truly inspiring. The Holy Father’s presence was, as it should be, second to the presence of Jesus. Pope and pilgrims together in prayer before the Lord our God united as one Church. It was one of those experiences where you had to be there to begin to feel the full impact of it all. Mass on Sunday was the culminating high point of the pilgrimage, a fitting culmination of a great experience. There were more than a half million pilgrims in the park alone with overflow crowds in adjacent parks. The number of concelebrants was limited to 4,000 and I was truly humbled to be one of them. The music, the cultural influences, the magnitude, the tremendous diversity, and yet the unity of faith all woven together into a glimpse of the heavenly liturgy on the triumphant Lamb of God in the kingdom.

Reflecting with the participants on the pilgrimage, one strong and recurrent theme was that the experience strongly confirmed their faith in Jesus and opened their eyes to the universality of the Catholic Church throughout the world. What more could one ask for? Now it is for the pilgrims to return to their homes throughout the world to bring the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit to others. CSA To date, 1,063 people have responded. 965 were gifts. $173,640 has been pledged, which is 83 percent of our goal. Reminder letters have gone out. Please respond, even if you cannot make a gift. Your response helps us to keep our parish records up to date. Master Plan The work on the field house at the High School and Academy is moving along on target. We are able to do this with the bond issue. It means that we will have our desperately needed athletic facility, performing arts center, and new science classrooms within the next year and a half. We will also need to immediately begin to pay off the bond issue over time. Following the motto of Saint Thérèse, we can do it “with all our strength.” Rosie and Carlito Rose seemed genuinely happy to see me come home. She stuck to me like glue for the first 24 hours to make sure I wouldn’t leave again. Now all seems to be back to normal. The big surprise was that even Carlito came down off his high perch to say hello and do a little dance. What a welcome.

Pope Proclaims Year Devoted to St. Paul June 29, 2008 to June 29, 2009 A Jubilee Year dedicated to St. Paul will be held from June 29, 2008 to June 29, 2009 to mark the 2000th anniversary of the apostle's birth. Pope Benedict XVI announced the Pauline Year at a vesper service on June 28 in the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome. The year will include a myriad of events in the areas of ecumenism, liturgy, prayer, art, history, archaeology, pastoral initiatives, and pilgrimages. “Dear brothers and sisters, as in early times, today too Christ needs apostles ready to sacrifice themselves. He needs witnesses and martyrs like St Paul. Paul, a former violent persecutor of Christians, when he fell to the ground dazzled by the divine light on the road to Damascus, did not hesitate to change sides to the Crucified One and followed him without second thoughts. He lived and worked for Christ, for him he suffered and died. Lending Library Australia has been in the news a lot lately, due to the publicity for World Youth Day. Did you know that Australia does not have any canonized saints? There is one in the

process, Mary Mackillop. She needs a miracle before the process can go forward. She was determined to bring education to the poor and underprivileged, and ran into many obstacles along the way, including excommunication and exile, which was later lifted. You can learn more about her by watching the DVD, "Mary A true story for the entire family." CSA Minute Natural Family Planning This Sunday, Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn will celebrate a Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on the transmission of life. Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Department of Education to offer regularly scheduled classes in the four major Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods—a way of life by which a couple recognizes natural, biological signs of fertility and infertility. In addition, the department offers a two-hour conjugal love and introductory NFP presentation for engaged couples, which provides insight into Church teaching about the spirituality of sexual intimacy in the sacrament of marriage. Beginning Experience Weekend A Beginning Experience Weekend is for those who are widowed, divorced or separated. It is de-signed to help participants let go of grief and create a more peace-filled future. Sign-up: Host the Cup of Blessing In Your Home To encourage family/household prayer we are introducing The Cup of Blessing Program at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. It will be easy to participate in the program. Each week a registered family/household will accept the responsibility to pray for Vocations, by accepting the Cup of Blessing and placing it in a prominent place of honor in their home, preferably as a Centerpiece on the kitchen table, where it can be seen all week, particularly at meal times. Each household/family will be provided with suitable Prayers for Vocations, which they can pray

before meals. Members of the household may also wish to spend some time talking about vocations, about the need for spiritual leaders in the Church, about ways they can affirm our priests and religious in their vocations, and other related topics. A Journal in which household members can record any thoughts and/or prayers they wish to pass on will accompany the Cup of Blessing. The Cup of Blessing will circulate “each week” to a new HOST FAMILY/HOUSEHOLD within the context of the Sunday, 9 am mass, with the hope that the practice of family/household prayer will spread throughout the parish. This program is a true response to Christ's call,

Life Matters I was recently blessed to be able to visit Poland. While learning a bit of the country’s history and its people, it was apparent how their Catholic faith gave them hope in the midst of the struggles of communism. This was also true for the people that endured the concentration camps. While visiting Auschwitz, we saw the horrific acts that one group of people can inflict on another. At the end of the tour, the guide explained that the Jewish people were not even treated like animals; they were treated like “bugs”. Hitler had convinced the Germans that the Jews were sub-human; therefore it was permissible to kill them; to do research on them. How else could good people kill other people; make them not human? The guide clearly stated that people knew what was happening and what we need to learn from these events is to never again remain silent in the midst of such evil. While reflecting on the experience, it was clear that today we are experiencing the same “brainwashing”. We live in a culture that is trying to convince us that the pre-born are not human and therefore can be killed and used for experimentation. As Archbishop Chaput once wrote: “The 'choice' in abortion always involves the choice to end the life of an unborn human being. For anyone who sees this fact clearly, neutrality, silence or private disapproval are not options. They are evils almost as grave as abortion itself." We are in the midst of a cultural war where lives are at stake; what will you do to break the silence?

Shrine Catholic Athletes Sports Physicals Attention those fifth through twelfth graders who will be playing sports for Shrine Catholic Grade School, Shrine Catholic Academy, or Shrine Catholic High School in the fall or winter (this would include soccer, football, basketball, volleyball or cheerleading). The Dads’ Club will have a pediatrician who will be doing sports physicals on four evenings in July. The physicals will be done at the Shrine Catholic Grade School from 6 to 9 pm on Tuesday, July 29. Please enter the grade school from the main school doors on the Linwood side of the school. Signs will be posted on the door. Physicals will also be done at the Shrine Catholic High School from 3 to 9 pm (note the extended hours for this day only) on Wednesday, July 23 and from 6 to 9 pm on Wednesday, July 30. Athletes should enter the west doors of the high school (signs will be posted). There will be a $20 fee per athlete (all money will go into the Dads’ Club fund, so checks should be made out to “Shrine Dads’ Club”). Students should wear a tee shirt and shorts. They should bring their green physical form (if they are Shrine Catholic Grade School or Shrine Catholic Academy students) they received at the sports “call out” in May or the high school sports physical form (if they are Shrine Catholic High School students) they received in the packet which was mailed to them. If they do not have the form, forms will be available. Parents should fill out the front side of the athlete’s form (please include the immunization record).
