Boss Shepherd Comes to Life at SPCA Meetingby Mark Pattison
SPCA Yard Sale Moves to April by Adrienne Antoine
Next Community
Meeting
Tuesday,
March 14, 7 pm
At March’s SPCA community meeting, we’ll hear from former Shepherd Park resident John Richardson, who
was so fascinated by the tales he heard about Alexander “Boss” Shepherd that he wrote a biography of him. John will talk about what he learned about our neighborhood’s namesake and have books for sale ($25 each) Tuesday, March 14, 7 pm, in the Shepherd Elementary auditorium.
We’ll also hear from DC’s 4-H and Youth Leadership Program. For youngsters, it heralds the return of outdoor gardening at Shepherd Elementary. For us grownups, we’ll
get tips on how to be stewards of the earth while growing our own vegetables. Updates on the Shepherd PTA gala, our neighborhood-wide yard sale, and more are also on tap.
If you hadn’t heard, we made 45 children’s holidays sweeter with presents -- and helped out their parents with grocery gift cards. Our Shepherd’s Table food drive, with Shepherd Elementary’s help, resulted in two carloads of food donations. And we’re not done yet. Watch for details on a children’s book drive this month.
That’s right, one of SPCA’s long-standing events has moved to the weekend of April 29-30. With so many
conflicting events happening in the area during the month of June, SPCA has decided to move the yard sale back to mid-spring. We hope this new time will draw new traffic and reduce competition with other neighborhood yard sales that usually happen in June.
As always, you can register to sell items at your home
(if you live within the SPCA boundaries) or set up a table in front of Shepherd Elementary School. So as you start thinking about spring cleaning and getting the house ready for summer, keep a lookout this month for more information on how to sign up for the yard sale.

The SPCA’s 2017 budget reflects our strong commitment to supporting our wonderful, vibrant community. On
the revenue side, we avoided being too aspirational. That said, with the energy that Thomas Dominique and Stacie Dennis bring to their new membership secretary and fundraising/development committee roles, respectively,
we incorporated into the budget what we believe are reasonable membership and sponsorship targets. (So, if you haven’t joined the SPCA yet, please do! And if your business may be interested in sponsoring one of our events, please contact us!) Also, to help offset our rising expenses, we nudged the membership dues up to $30 from $25, which had been the going rate for some time. On the expense side of things, the big drivers are the newsletter and the picnic, followed by the potluck and the Halloween parade. The newsletter production costs have risen significantly, and we incorporated your feedback about the need to earmark more funds for our beloved community events. (In other words, we don’t want any trick-or-treaters walking away from the parade empty-handed.) Thank you for your support of the SPCA and our community! Let us know how we can continue to make things better.

December Meeting a Community Energizer by June Confer
The SPCA community meeting was held on December 13, 2016 at
the Shepherd ES auditorium. About 40 residents attended the meeting. First, we welcomed Denise Blackson of the DC People’s Council for an energy workshop. She shared low-cost tips for reducing utility bills and demonstrated energy-saving devices. She passed out informational brochures and recruited a volunteer, Yvette Pearson, to use the devices for a three-month period and then submit a report on their use. Samantha May reported on the Walter Reed Dream Project and invited attendees to share stories about interaction with Walter Reed (WR). Several people spoke
about the involvement of Shepherd ES students with the hospital complex. Students met WR doctors and scientists through an annual visit to the Pathology Museum, and WR personnel often served as science fair judges. The students also were invited to participate in the WR celebration of Native American Day. Other residents spoke about their children using the swimming pool and tennis courts and making visits to returning injured veterans.
Ms. May encouraged those with more stories to share them in writing or make appointments for personal interviews. There were event announcements and sharing of committee activities as well as brief remarks from ANC and DC Council offices. We again thank Ledo’s for the pizzas and the Shepherd ES building staff for their help.

Mark your calendars for the 13th annual SPCA Garden Tour on
Sunday, May 21, 2-5 pm. This self-guided walking tour showcases the beautiful landscapes within Shepherd Park, Colonial Village, and North Portal Estates. Unique gardens of all sizes and styles will be on display for everyone’s enjoyment and inspiration. We are currently recruiting hosts and other volunteers for the tour. Do you have a garden you would like to share? Maybe you have seen a neighbor’s yard that would make a lovely addition to the tour. Perhaps you would like to volunteer for the tour and enjoy insider perks. If so, please send a message to tour coordinators Alexandra Kincannon ([email protected]) or Deirdre Evans-Pritchard ([email protected]).
You can get tickets right now by visiting the SPCA home page at www.shepherdpark.org and clicking: “Join, Donate, & Pay for Events Online”. There, you can renew your membership and purchase Garden Tour tickets all at once! Tickets are still only $15 per person for general admission, and $7 for SPCA members. The Garden Tour is a wonderful chance to meet other
gardening enthusiasts. Come celebrate the beauty of spring and show your community support! The proceeds from the tour go directly to support SPCA beautification projects throughout our neighborhood.
Stay tuned to the Shepherd Park list serve and the SPCA home page for further updates as the date gets closer. To see photos from past tours, visit the photo gallery at http://shepherdpark.org/photo.html.
May is also the time for SPCA’s spring plant-in, when we plant
flowers and greenery in the pots along Georgia Avenue and at the welcome triangle at Georgia and Alaska. This year’s planting date is Saturday, May 13, 8:30 - 10:30 am. SPCA purchases the plants and the mulch. Neighbors do the planting. The result is blooms and color throughout the summer!
We are looking for volunteers for two tasks. First, we need people to plant on May 13. It’s easy and so rewarding! Previous planting experience is helpful but not required. Children are welcome with an adult. A second, and perhaps bigger, challenge with this project is watering, particularly during the hot, dry months of July and August. We’re open to ideas for making this happen. Please contact Cynthia Prather, [email protected], if you or your neighborhood organization would like to adopt a pot or to to water and weed the plants for a particular week.

Potluck Dinner a Smashing Successby Roz Coates; photos by Beth Allaben and Ralph Blessing
Thanks to each of you for your tremendous support of the
potluck dinner. We had a wonderful turnout, and the food was absolutely outstanding. The decorations..., the music..., the camaraderie and fellowship...I could just go on and on. Congratulations to our door prize winners. Special congratulations go to our newest SPCA neighbors, Pree Sen and Bharat Khanna, who moved to the 1200 block of Floral Street in
December. In terms of the longest residents, a surprising number of folks moved into Shepherd Park in the 60s -- including Doris Collie and Jackie Holt. And when you have a chance, have a conversation with Fred Schirrmacher, who has lived in his home on Primrose since 1942!
Special thanks to the committee, who worked so hard to make this year’s event a smashing success: Ed Atkins, Gaye Gelhon, Dan McDade,
Mark Pattison, Yvette Pearson, Cynthia Prather, Bonnie Randolph, and Doris Spruell. Thanks, also to Ralph Blessing and Beth Allaben, who provided these wonderful shots! For more pictures visit the website, www.shepherdpark.org.

With two children who love
dumplings, we were excited to hear of the new restaurant opening on Georgia Ave serving moh moh, or Nepalese dumplings, yet we were also curious as to what Nepalese dumplings would be like. We enlisted a friend of ours who travels to Nepal frequently to join us in our first foray into what they describe as Indo-Chinese dining.
We got an assortment of dumplings, which come in pork, beef, chicken, and vegetarian. The restaurant does run out of dumplings sometimes towards the end of the evening, as we found out on this first visit. It is also best to order ahead of time, as the dumplings take about 15 minutes to steam.
What distinguishes Nepalese dumplings compared to the more common Chinese, Korean, or Japanese dumplings is the richness of the spices used to season the fillings. Additionally, Moh
Moh’s offers three different sauces. The hot sauce has a nice heat, without completely burning your mouth. Also available are a tamarind and soy-based sauce. In addition to the dumplings, the menu includes curries – lamb or chicken – served with rice, chickpeas, and salad. Again, the curries
are nicely spiced and rich in flavor. The rice that accompanies it is also seasoned and more interesting than the typical plain white rice.
Moh Moh Licious is definitely a welcome, new, and different dining option that also has the potential to bring in others to our neighborhood for its unique flavors.

The proposed Jemal’s Gateway development at Georgia and Alaska Avenues with Kalmia Road, NW, received a
Final Action of Approval from the DC Zoning Commission on February 17th. Although the proposal was unanimously approved by the DC Zoning Commission in its September 12, 2016 meeting, the final order that was published in February provides the legal framework for building permits. The “final order” provides the legal framework for building permits and certificates of occupancy, which are necessary for construction to begin and the building to be leased. The forty-five page document includes findings of fact, existing and proposed zoning, a description of the project, project benefits, concurrence with the Comprehensive and Georgia Avenue Plans, contested issues, and conclusions of law as well as the specific conditions for issuing a building permit and a certificate of occupancy. The Zoning Commission action is posted on its website under ZC Order No 15-29 (Exhibit 62).
The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) Board recently approved the Voluntary
Settlement Agreement brokered by Shepherd Park Citizens Association board members and the owner of Champion Kitchen. The new restaurant, located in the former Eddie’s restaurant, Georgia Ave and Kalmia Road, will offer traditional Ethiopian fare in a relaxing, comfortable environment. The restaurant’s owner agreed to, among other items, noise attenuating features, trash removal and clean up responsibility, security enhancement measures, and parking notices. The restaurant is expected to open by the spring. Contact President Mark Pattison, [email protected] for a copy of the final agreement.

officially opened on February 11 with a ribbon cutting and art unveiling. The complex includes studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units with a variety of amenities. The ribbon cutting also marked the opening of Sonny’s Green, a public park between the Pearl and the Giant parking lot. The green has playground equipment, a walking trail, a community garden, and a dog park.
Construction has started on the row of piggy-back luxury condominiums in the 7200 block of Georgia Avenue.
The first phase should be completed by September 2017. For more information, contact Darsheika Giles, [email protected], (202) 329-0675.
