Sharpening Presentation/Demonstration

• Recommended resourceso AAW - videos and articles from American Woodturnero Allan Batty's "Woodturning Notes" - available from Craft Supplieso Joe Fleming's Demonstration Handout from San Diego Woodturnerso Club Mentors

• Sharpening Equipmento Required

• Grinder• Grinding PlatformfTable• Grinding Wheel Dresser• Eye Protection

o Optional• Protractor• Grinding Jig• Diamond Hones - flat and/or cone-shaped

• Sharpening Procedureo Adjust grinder platform or jigo Place tool on the platform or in the jigo Place the tool in proper grinding position for that toolo Place your body in position to start and finish grindo Rehearse the grinding motion before starting grindero Put on safety glasses or face shieldo Start the grinder and grind tool edgeo Hone the edge, if desired

• Six basic turning tool types

o Skewo Roughing Gougeo Spindle Gougeo Bowl Gougeo Parting Toolo Scraper

• Each of these tools has specific sharpening requirements

o Skew• Angled cutting edge - (minus) 20 degrees from horizontal with tool

held vertical• Length of double bevel - 1-1/2 times thickness• Use table set to proper angle

• Position tool and slide from right to left across wheel whilemaintaining position

• If tool has radiused cutting edge, pivot tool on table so cutting edgesweeps across wheel

o Roughing Gouge• Bevel cutting edge 35 to 40 degrees up from horizontal with tool

held horizontal• Use table set to 35 to 40 degree angle• Roll tool on table while holding tool at center of wheel to produce

"flat" grind - begin grind on either the right or left side of tool

o Spindle Gouge (Shallow Profile)• Bevel cutting edge at 40 degrees up from horizontal with tool held

horizontal• Create wings on cutting edge to produce "fingernail" grind• Use table set at 40 degrees - OR• Use jig set for 40 degree grind• If using table position tool either 45 degrees to right or left of center

of wheel with starting wing down - swing tool towards centerline ofwheel and through to 45 degrees on opposite side of tool -combine swing of tool with rolling motion

• If using jig use a similar procedure - with tool in jig begin the grindon either the right or left of the wheel and swing the tool through tothe other side - the jig will handle the rolling motion

o Bowl Gouge (Deep Profile)• Bevel cutting edge at 40 to 50 degrees up from horizontal with tool

held horizontal• Create wings on cutting edge to produce "fingernail" grind• Use Table set at 40 to 50 degrees - OR• Use jig set for between a 40 to 50 degree grind• If using table position tool either 45 degrees to right or left of center

of wheel with starting wing down - swing tool towards centerline ofwheel and through to 45 degrees on opposite side of tool -combine swing of tool with rolling motion

o Parting Tool• Two types of Parting tools - Diamond Blade Parting Tool and Thin-

Blade Parting Tool• Cutting edge is full 90 degrees to face of tool• Shape blade equally on right and left to create a point for Diamond

Blade Tool• Length of sides of point equal 1-114 the thickness of blade• Use table set at proper angle• Grind each side of point at same angle to centerline of tool• Point for the Thin Blade Tool is offset between a ratio of 20:80• Length of short side of point is 1-1/4 the thickness of the blade -

Length of long side of point is what it is• Set Table at proper angle• Grind short side of point at 40 degrees and grind long side to follow

profile of grinder wheel

o Scraper• Bevel the cuttingfl dge from 70 to 80 degrees up from horizontal

with tool held hori ontal• Some scrapers h ve a grind along the left side of the blade that

matches the bev I at the nose of the tool• Use table set at f~om 70 to 80 degrees• Place tool on tabJ and grind the nose by moving the tool from side

to side• Grind the side of he scraper, if it is sharpened, to match the grind

on the nose by loving the tool along the table from side to side• After the nose ana the side of the scraper have been sharpened

blend the two toqether with a short radius curve

o Burrs and Honing• Grinding will raise a coarse burr on the cutting edge. This burr will

be removed by the cutting action of the tool. However, during finalfinish cutting it may be desirable to remove this burr by honing. If aburr is desired to aid with finishing it is best to remove the burrcaused by grinding and form a burr with a steel used for thispurpose. Honing can also be used to freshen a recently groundedge between grinder Sharpening.
