Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Term 1— Week 2, 7th February 2019
Dear Families, Welcome back to school. I hope that you and your family had a wonderful time over the school holiday break. It has been a smooth and happy start to the year with students settling well into their new classes.
We welcome 105 Reception students and their families to our school this year and 11 older students and their families as well. We hope that you have all had a successful start to 2019.
We welcome this year to our staff; Assistant Principal-Tania Dal Zotto, Teachers-Sarah Ellis-Steinborner (Auslan), Tyson Gerrie (Year 7), Luke Davies (Year 7), Judy Pearson (Year 2 & 6), Julie Stanton (Year 5/6), Jodi Clark (Year 4/5), Liam Wytkin (Year 4), Kristian Allen (Year 3) and Georgia Gelissen (Year 1). SSOs-George Prodromou, Janine Graetz, Mandy Axisa, Adrian Barham, Andy Popescu, Bec Highnam, Rebecca Williams, Lisa Johns, Susan Rice and Sophia Corso.
We have begun the year with 772 students in 31 classes. We are in the process of running panels to fill the following positions: Deputy Principal for terms 1 and 2, Assistant Principal Wellbeing for 1 year, R-3 Mathematics Coach for 1 year, Reading Support Teachers R-3 and Year 4-7 for 1 year and Pastoral Care Worker. We will notify you who the successful applicants are once the processes are complete.
Teachers returned to work in the weeks before students came back to school preparing for their new class and setting up their rooms. On the Thursday and Friday before the long weekend staff worked together to ensure consistency across year levels and discussed R-7 expectations. They also analysed student data in English and Mathematics, shared strategies to support individual students to be successful and planned with their teaching partners and SSOs. We are set for a fantastic year ahead!

Cont. We are always interested in and value feedback from Families and the School Community about how we can improve our school to best meet the needs of you and your children. We continually support and encourage students to be the best that they can be and we would like to do the same as a school. Please don’t hesitate to contact staff with any concerns or new ideas that you may have.

10 Tips to Parent Your Anxious Child
By Anne Marie Albano, PhD, author of “You and Your Anxious Child”. with Leslie Pepper
1. Respect and validate your child’s feelings! Anxiety is a real emotion and not pleasant.
2. Teach your child deep, slow, belly breathing. This is an easy and very portable skill for self-soothing and calming.
3. Listen to your child and ask “Tell me what you are thinking?” This will help to reveal scary thoughts and scenes that build up in your child’s mind.
4.Rather than swooping to reassure, ask your child “How likely is (that thing you’re afraid of) to happen?” You’ll be teaching them to challenge their anxious thinking.
5. Prompt your child with “Tell me some things you can do to handle this situation” and help them to brainstorm, rather than just giving them solutions. They’ll feel empowered.
6. Give up the idea of “mental health days” “skip days” “sleep with mum nights” or other ways of avoiding feared situations. This just makes the anxiety stick more firmly and lead to further avoidance.
7. Encourage your child’s attempts to be brave, no matter how small they may seem to you. Use labeled praise such as “I’m so proud of you for sleeping in your own bed last night!”
8. Work with your child to outline small steps leading to a bigger goal.
9. Create opportunities for your child to practise being brave and coping, and then high-five his/her efforts!
10. Recognise when you are anxious and say aloud what you can do to calm down and solve the situation. You’ll be modeling coping for your child, but be mindful and don’t overshare your anxiety!
