SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER

1. General Information

A. Effectivity

(1) This service information letter is applicable to all TFE731 Models.

B. Purpose

(1) The purpose of this service information letter is to provide a thorough discussion ofthe TFE731 Honeywell/CAMP Engine Condition Trend Monitoring (ECTM) programfor manually recorded cockpit data (also known as Kneepad data). The basic theoryand benefits of ECTM are discussed, along with the data collection, transmittal, and analysis process. The communication process between the operator, CAMP,and Honeywell is also detailed.

C. References

(1) Service Information Letter F731-88 - HONEYWELL/CAMP - Engine Condition TrendMonitoring - Electronic Data (N1 DEEC).

D. Description

(1) ECTM Background:(a) The basis for Honeywell/CAMP ECTM is the observation that certain

engine component malfunctions cause engine performance shifts. Industryexperience has shown that recording and monitoring in-flight engineperformance may provide early detection of problems that, if left uncorrected, could lead to costly repairs or cancelled flights.

E. Additional Instructions

(1) Engine Trend Recording Procedure:(a) Data Recording/Faxing:

1 The TFE731 Honeywell/CAMP ECTM program starts in the aircraftcockpit. The flight crew will record key parameters once a stabilizedcruise condition is established. Stabilized cruise is defined as 5minutes after a constant cruise speed is attained. Also, in-flight datashould only be recorded when airframe and engine anti-ice systemsare not in use. However, flight crews are not expected to turn offanti-ice for the purpose of recording data unless flight conditionspermit continued safe operation.

(b) Honeywell/CAMP ECTM effectiveness is dependent on the amount of datasubmitted and analyzed. Therefore, flight crews are requested to record dataonce per flight if cockpit workload permits and stabilization requirements aremet. Flight crews may wish to record data more than once per flight onparticularly long routes. It is recognized that some flights may be too short topermit the recording of data. Again, the key is that Honeywell/CAMP ECTMvalue is related to the amount of flight data recorded. Therefore, flight datashould be recorded when reasonable to do so.

(c) It is important that flight crews write legibly on the standardizedHoneywell/CAMP data recording form (or trend form) Figure 1, making

sure to include all parameters including date, flight level, intake outside airtemperature (IOAT) or ram air temperature (RAT) or static air temperature(SAT), Mach number, low pressure rotating group speed (N1), high pressurerotating group speed (N2), and interstage turbine temperature (ITT).

NOTE: Current data recording forms are also available to downloadfrom CAMP Systems. Toll Free: 1-855-932-3286 or International1-450-640-3286 (Trending Support Desk) www.campsystems.com

(d) The data recording form should be faxed to CAMP after recording data forthree flights OR once per week whichever is sooner (when data has beenrecorded). The flight crew should make sure the customer name, telephoneand fax number, aircraft (AC) registration number, and AC type and serialnumber (SN) blanks are completed. Additionally, the flight crew is requested toprovide engine SN and total engine hours/cycles to date. Finally, any pertinentremarks should also be included. For example, if maintenance crews replacedan aircraft ITT gage or turbine section maintenance was performed, thesecomments should be entered in the appropriate block.

NOTE: Please forward all on-wing performance margins (MEDRA)separately to CAMP if available.

(2) CAMP Analysis:

(a) CAMP’s analysis of the trend data is supported by algorithms provided byHoneywell, which utilize the same engine models used to design the engines. These models correct the data to the same operating conditions used byMEDRA to calculate ITT and N2 margins, and therefore provide an estimate ofthe margins the operator should expect if they conduct a 5 point run. Themargin data is statistically smoothed to reduce fluctuations due to unavoidabledata collection variations. The results of this approach are trend plots ofengine performance parameters that are used to assess the overall healthor condition of the engine.
