MARCH 08 ~ SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Today’s gospel presents the familiar story of the trans-figuration. Peter, James, and John were awestruck by the appearance of Jesus and by the words that the voice of God spoke: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Listen to Him. This message is for us. Pray for the grace to be open to God’s word, to be transfigured into a courageous mes-senger of God’s love.

FROM FATHER JOHN

We are off to a wonderful beginning in our celebration of Lent 2020. We have a good number coming to Daily Mass. Our Lenten programs on Mary and on the Cath-olic Faith were well attended. In the announcements of last weekend I urged every member of the parish to par-ticipate in at least one Lenten Program. There is still time to begin.

Think about coming to Weekday Mass at 9:00a.m. Confessions are offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:30PM to 8:00PM. During this time there is also ado-ration of Jesus in the Eucharist. Join us on Monday mornings or Wednesday evenings for the program on Mary. Come to the presentations on the Catholic Faith on Monday evenings in the church. Most of all, plan to

celebrate our great holy days: the Sacred Triduum on Holy Thursday evening, Good Friday evening, and the Holy Saturday evening Easter Vigil. Happy Lent! ~Father John

LENTEN FAITH FORMATION - PART II The Life and Faith of a Catholic Chris-tian - Presentations on the basics of our faith Presented by Fr. John Kiley. The topic for Monday, March 09, 7:00PM is “Saved from What? Jesus, His Identity and Mission.” We will consider the person of Jesus. Who is Jesus? Why did He come into the world? What has He accomplished for the human race? Having a personal relationship with Jesus. How is Je-sus the savior of the world.

CATHOLIC APPEAL 2020

Next weekend, March 14/15, the Catholic Appeal will be launched in all parishes throughout the Archdiocese. In preparation, we invite you to prayerfully consider making a generous gift that will benefit both our parish and the many ministries that serve the 283 parishes, 110 schools, and 144 communities throughout the Archdiocese. Please take a moment today to review the Catholic Appeal insert in this bulletin to learn more about the meaningful impact your gift will have. This is our Church, and when you support the Appeal, you support us. Please visit the new Appeal website at bostonca-tholicappeal.org to learn more, make a gift online, or view the Appeal video. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance, and, in preparation for baptism, or, of renewal of baptism at Easter.

MONTH’S MIND (TIME CHANGE FOR THIS

MONTH)

On Sunday, March 08, at 9:00AM, we will remember in a special way those whose Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated last month:

SCRIPTURE FOR MARCH 08

First Reading Genesis 12:1–4a (25A) Abram was commanded by the Lord to leave his home and go to a new land. There the Lord God would make of him a great nation, and all would be blessed because of him. Responsorial Psalm 33:4–5, 18–19, 20, 22 Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. Second Reading 2 Timothy 1:8b–10 God saves all people and calls them to a holy life, not because of their own merit but because of the grace held out in Christ. Christ “destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” Gospel Acclamation cf. Matthew 17:5 From the shin-ing cloud the Father’s voice is heard: This is my be-loved Son, hear him. Gospel Matthew 17:1–9 Jesus went up to a high

mountain. With Moses and Elijah at his side, he was transfigured before the eyes of his disciples Peter, James, and John. A voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

THE UNBROKEN WORD……………………………………….BY MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM What Calms You? Even the most serene individuals all had moments in their lives when they searched for ways to calm themselves down. Everyone has something they do which will help them get in touch with that sometimes fleeting peace which comes from unexpected places. For those of us with a disciplined prayer life (or even an undisciplined one), we all have some sacred space that we can return to. It might be climbing a mountain, relaxing on the beach, a coffee on a Sunday morning. These images, stimu-lation, and experiences all have a direct connection to God, even though it might not be obvious at the time. We are putting to rest our busyness, the chaos, the current crisis. We begin to take an excursion to the heart. The life source within us, one which informs our very being. It is also the place where we connect to God. Of all the physical organs, the heart is the one most frequently connected with the soul. As the heart is the center of our physical life, our soul is the center of our eternal one. Let us rest for a while this week, return to those places where we may be able to hear God’s message to us, where it is primed in our heart and then distributed to our other senses through life-giving blood. While our blood gives us physical life, our soul needs the unending source of grace, which is God’s love communicat-ed. Let us slow down, remain silent, listen, and as St. Augustine says, “Rest in Thee.” Have a blessed week.
