Second Sunday in Lent
Welcome to St. John’s Lutheran Church
Good morning and a blessed welcome to you! It truly is an honor to have you
worshipping with us this morning and it is our prayer that you find great comfort and
peace in Jesus’ Word of love, mercy, and forgiveness! If you are visiting with us today,
please take one of the visitor gift bags from the visitors’ center.
At St. John’s we are pleased to offer a variety of service formats on Sunday morning. In
our 8:30 a.m. traditional service we offer familiar hymns and rich, traditional worship
forms in a meaningful and inspirational setting. Our 11:00 a.m. contemporary service
includes the same message as our 8:30 a.m. service but in an informal style, enhanced
with contemporary music. We encourage you to try both worship styles! Thank you
for worshipping with us; we would love to have you join us again!
(If you need any assistance or need a hearing aid device, please see one of the ushers.)

PRAYER OF THE DAY
LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Genesis 12:1-9 1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your
father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great
nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All
the families on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram departed as the Lord
had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he
left Haran. 5 He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his
livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed
for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan, 6 Abram traveled through the
land as far as Shechem. There he set up camp beside the oak of Moreh. At that time,
the area was inhabited by Canaanites. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,
“I will give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there and
dedicated it to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 After that, Abram traveled
south and set up camp in the hill country, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east.
There he built another altar and dedicated it to the Lord, and he worshiped the Lord. 9 Then Abram continued traveling south by stages toward the Negev. (NLT)

C: Thanks be to God.
LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Romans 4:1-8, 13-17 1 Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he
discover about being made right with God? 2 If his good deeds had made him
acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not
God’s way. 3 For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted
him as righteous because of his faith.” 4 When people work, their wages are not a
gift, but something they have earned. 5 But people are counted as righteous, not
because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. 6 David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are
declared righteous without working for it: 7 “Oh, what joy for those whose
disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. 8 Yes, what joy for those
whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.” 13
Clearly, God’s promise to give the
whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to
God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith. 14
If God’s
promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the
promise is pointless. 15
For the law always brings punishment on those who try to
obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!) 16
So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain
to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith
like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe. 17
That is what the
Scriptures mean when God told him, “I have made you the father of many nations.”
This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to
life and who creates new things out of nothing. (NLT)
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
HOLY GOSPEL John 3:1-17
L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord. (sung)
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a
teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with
him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he
cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born
when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the
Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh,
and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You
must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but
you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who
is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”
10 Jesus
answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these
things? 11
Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to
what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12
If I have told you
earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly
things? 13
No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven,
the Son of Man. 14
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the
Son of Man be lifted up, 15
that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in
him should not perish but have eternal life. 17
For God did not send his Son into the
world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through
him. (ESV)
L: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ. (sung)

means receiving what God gives. And God has given us so much more than just the
crumbs that fall from the table. He has given us life, salvation, body and soul, eyes
and ears, possessions and income. That’s where our stewardship starts, with faith in
the God who is the greatest Giver.
