Jordan & Mark Friday Whitney Moore O ne of the things I was most struck by during my sabbatical time in England was just how old and how varied the Christian faith is. This really helps to put some things into perspective. I mean, when you stand in a sanctu- ary that has been around since the 14 th century, you realize that problems with the air conditioning not working really haven't been the most pressing church matter forever. You see things in a much broader context. You develop an appreciation for the church being global and ancient and always adapting to new times and contexts. One of the defining characteristics of Second B has always been our understanding of and appreciation for the ways in which the Christian faith is to be communicated and lived in its present context. I was reminded of this by something Beth Pennington said in a meeting I was in not long ago: "We take an ancient faith and live it," she said, "in a contemporary time and a contemporary way." When she said that I thought immediately of our church's logo, the atomic ichthus, which com- bines the ancient Christian symbol of the fish and the modern atomic symbol and fuses the two into one. One of our former pastors, Hardy Clemons, did his doctoral dissertation on Harry Emerson Fosdick and was fond of quoting him: "Astronomies come and go; but the stars abide." Of course, it is a great understatement to say our understanding of technology, the cosmos, science, and the social sciences has changed dramatically in the last two millennia. Changes in style, music, architecture, transportation, and community have all also changed. The pace of these changes seems to be growing exponentially. How different will be the world our children's children inherit. Yet, we believe that even in the midst of so much change one thing remains -- Christ, the one "in whom all things were created" (Colossians 1:16). The message and meaning of Christ is eternal. As one contemporary Christian song says it, "From age to age he stands." As the school semester begins again and fall programming gets going, we as a church need to remember that we have a vocation, a calling, for this age: to proclaim Christ through words and action, in our own contemporary time and our own contemporary way. - Ryon Want to be a Host Family? Help us show hospitality to new international students who have recently arrived to study in Lubbock! So far this school year, 87 students have requested to be matched with an American "Friendship" Family, through the Baptist Student Ministry alone. O ne of the things I was most struck by during my sabbatical time in England was just how old and how varied the Christian faith is. This really helps to put some things into
