TONI&GUY is an international superbrand. Toni and Guy Mascolo opened their first salon in South London in 1963, and it has since grown to become one of the largest hair brands in the world, with salons spanning America, Europe and Asia.

In 1995, TONI&GUY was brought to Australia by brothers, Dennis and Graham Langford, who set up 33 TONI&GUY salons nation-wide.

Throughout the years, the reputation and talent of TONI&GUY Australia hairdressers, have made them key contributors to the Australian hairdressing landscape - headlining education seminars, shows and winner lists for the Hair Expo Awards and the Australian Hair Fashion Awards. In 2015, Dennis and Graham were recognised for their contribution to the Australian and New Zealand Hairdressing Industry by being inducted into the Hair Expo Hall of Fame.

TONI&GUY has an internationally renowned education program for both trainees and qualified hairdressers, with education being a key part of its brand and reputation. In 2012, TONI&GUY Australia launched the TONI&GUY Sydney School of Hairdressing, to teach and mentor those new to the hairdressing industry.

The School’s mission is to provide a high quality, practical course that reflects real hairdressing practice, providing the right training and support to ensure a smooth transition into employment as a graduate hairdresser.

“Dennis and Graham Langford have tirelessly worked side-by-side and have built a strong brand and an incredible team of hairdressers. This formidable team have grown their

business to 33 salons around Australia. Touching many hairdressers lives, whether it be through education or helping hairdressers buy into a business that they may have thought they would never be able to afford, their belief has always been that everyone should

have equal opportunity.

Involved with education of full time students at their own school of hairdressing, they make their students feel like they are a part of the business – like a family. Many of Australia’s

most acclaimed hairdressers have come through their stables, which is proof of their solid education foundations, and education structure which they are both passionate about.

They are wonderful mentors in the salon, and on the education floor”.

Hall of Fame Award introduction, Hair Expo, 2015.

“My experience with TONI&GUY was amazing. The educators were great and the facilities and equipment were top notch. The educators went above and beyond to ensure everyone was getting the most out of every lesson. It really exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend anyone wanting to go into the hairdressing industry to look into doing this course.”

EttaTechnician, TONI&GUY Chatswood Certificate III in Hairdressing Graduate, Class of 2015

“We currently have a graduate working with us who completed her

course last year and is amazing! She has a good knowledge base and is growing a strong clientele.

Another graduate that we employed progressed to become a Head

Technician within a short period of time, consistently hitting goals

and pushing herself through photo shoots, becoming one of the highest

earners in the salon at the time.”

TONI&GUY provides a space in which the student is able to learn and develop their skills at their ownpace. The trainer is able to introduce and guide the student with each skill, one-on-one, through demonstration and verbal instruction.

All learning takes place face-to-face, and reinforced through visual, practical demonstrations from the trainer, as well as visually-based learning materials.

Assessment is conducted in the following ways:

1. Observation of practical tasks 2. Workbooks with short answer questions and activities 3. Portfolio of industry research

Assessment is often conducted holistically to capture the student’s competency, ensuring that the standard we expect is the same as the standard of their future employer.

All practical assessments are:

• conducted on real, paying clients • conducted with real salon time frames.

TONI&GUY has a large network of salons across Australia and offers opportunities for salon assistant graduate work. Although we do not guarantee employment, we aim to support each student to work towards achieving their career goals by connecting them with employment opportunities, as well as providing industry work experience through numerous events that we participate in throughout the year.

The students learn alongside hairdressers already working in industry who attend our short courses and advanced training programs. TONI&GUY Paddington is also home to Label.M, a professional haircare range that is stocked in salons around Australia.

Page 17: SCHOOL OF HAIRDRESSING - TONI&GUY EDUCATIONtoniandguyeducation.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/SHB3041… · 30 January 2017 – 6 April 2017 24 April 2017 – 29 June 2017 17 July

The students learn within the TONI&GUY Paddington salon space.

On Monday-Thursday (AM), this space is a dedicated to training. On Thursday (PM) – Saturday, this space operates as a commercial TONI&GUY salon. The students have access to all resources available to the commercial salon staff. The student salon has a flow of paying clients who are sourced either by the student, or who book through reception after reviewing our student services on the TONI&GUY Education website.

There is a dedicated reception space with a register and Salon Genius enabled computer specifically for booking student models. Although students train on real models throughout their week, one day a week is specifically allocated as a salon practice day, with a focus on ‘salon flow’. On this day, students apply their skills on paying clients working in the salon under the supervision of a trainer. They are expected to manage their column and apply their salon skills. If they are at the stage of assessment, they are assessed in this salon environment. Students are also rostered on reception for 12, 3 hour sessions where they are expected to manage all of the salon and customer service tasks associated with this role.

Service timing is based on feedback we have received through our industry consultation. This is to ensure that assessment reflects industry standard and that the graduate is better able to transition into a salon environment.

All students will be given the opportunity to participate in a photo shoot towards the end of their course. This is an opportunity for each student to showcase their skills and build their portfolio. The students work with a creative team including make-up artist, model and photographer, to create images that can be used in their digital portfolio that will enable them to promote their skills to potential employers. This is also an invaluable exercise in creative collaboration and learning the unique skills required to work in the high pressure, yet exciting world of session styling.
