Sustainable development in hairdressing

Sustainable Developmentin Hairdressing

Page 2: Sustainable development in hairdressing

Sustainable development in hairdressing is a project funded by EU program Leonardo da Vinci including partners from all Nordic countries. The goal is to develop a more sustainable hairdressing via vocational education.

• Danmark: Marias Paradis

• Finland: Fortbildningscentrum Prakticum, Salon Mereth, Hiusgalleria Salon Eliza

• Norge: Breivang vidergaende skole, Irene Stana, Opplarningskontoret Nord

• Sverige: Hair Academy, Kalmar

• Island: Teakniskolen, Reykjavik

With this project we wish to contribute to meeting the demands by developing a common international education program for environment-friendly hair care that built on existing educational concepts in Finland, Denmark and Sweden and innovative a way that encourages student mobility and cooperation between VET-providers and the professionals in the business. The cooperation between VET professionals will be strengthened by together developing the content and criteria for a new education program.

The project consortium consists of a variety of VET-providers and SME:s from Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Some key-experts from outside the consortium have been involved from the very beginning and they will provide their services for the benefit of the project.

The demand for environment-friendly hair care is expanding rapidly because of awareness of the health-hazards that for example hair care products impose on both hairstylists and consumers. Suitable education in sustainable development and environment-friendly hair care is necessary in order for these demands to be met and for hairdressers to be able to continue their career.

At the end of the project we will have an international education program for environment-friendly hair care that will provide a new opportunity for traditional hairdressers that have been forced to stop working because of allergies and an alternative for those who are environmentally aware and wish to study hair care.

The project analyzes the current strengths in the different countries in the profession, join them together and together make a education model available to all. The model is made in the form of ECVET.

Exam, modules and units

One exam contains of studying modules or you can call them exam parts. Each exam part contents one or more modules. EU has decided that in ECVET these exam parts are called modules, and a smaller part is a unit. In our case this means 3 modules where each module contains 2 units. In chapter 2.2 you can read about our education triangle that illustrates our intention with the exam parts.

Fortbildningscentrum Prakticum

Fortbildningscentrum Prakticum is the only upper secondary vocational institution in the Greater Helsinki area for adults. The main unit is situ-ated in Helsinki (Arabianranta), but there is also a smaller unit in the town of Porvoo, 50 kilometers east of Helsinki.

Fortbildningscentrum Prakticum offers mostly vocational education for adults who have completed comprehensive school and who have some work experience. The language of instruction is mainly Swedish and Finnish.

The different programs lead to an official qualification or part of a qualification or, in other cases, education and training is arranged as courses which focus on a specialized field of expertise. The qualifications are taken as competence-based qualifications. Please read more about our work and services here.

Mona Mether, educator and ecological hair dresser

Mona has experience as a hairdresser since 1982. She got her master and specialist qualification, and has worked as an entrepreneur in the hairdressing field since 1986 and as a vocational teacher since 1994. The ecological hairdresser studies she studied at Herbian in Sweden year 2000, after which she was involved to start up educational training in Finland. First group ecological hairdressers in Finland completed their studies and got ecological hairdresser certification at Fortbildningscentrum Prakticum in 2003. Today, the ecological hairdressing training is very popular and the content has doubled.

“I feel prioritized that I have the opportunity to work with Sustainable development in the hairdressing field, supporting the natural beauty both as an educator and organic hairdresser. This feels so right for both nature and human. All training courses are interesting because nature is an endless source of beauty, which holds lots of information where we all learn together. Therefore we should revere nature and use natural beauty with respect, remember to focus us on sustainable development. Thanks for letting me work with natural beauty "

• Swirls are strength

51

Energy haircutting

Page 53: Sustainable development in hairdressing

• Scissors are used – cutting by razors are cutting the hair up - the energies runs out of the hair

• By combing, combing and combing the hair – the slags that have been released during the massage is purified away by combing

• And concretized away through haircutting.

• Comb – Yin/ Scissors – Yang (as lymph treatment for hair)

The haircutting process➡ Start by brushing the hair➡ Decide the length by combing straight down (1)➡ A mobile inner design line. Divide a narrow section from the

hairline at face to the neck in the middle of the head, on the head meridian. Cut the hair always in normal direction 90 degrees from the scalp. (2)

➡ Now you have the length, follow it and go on cutting from four different directions: ➡ vertically (3)➡ horizontally (4)➡ diagonally-forward (5) and back (6)- at an angle of 90 degrees

➡ Hole process x 3 and end with the inner desgin line again.

• The haircutting is emerging – do not manipulate the hair

• The haircutting is a process and usually after the 3rd haircuts, the hair starts to operate and cooperate with “us”

• If the customer needs support - then we can support by texturizing (a stage before the process is completed in harmony)

• It is important for the hairdresser to be in present with the soul, mind and heart. “Cutting by loving the hair”, allowing to enjoy the process and let the positive energy flow freely.

• Enjoy the silence – you are so close to another people, so what you speak will stay on the clients energy field.

• Allowing you to work as a hairdresser in a positive, easy energy and do not perform The haircutting process feels like a dance

• Balancing energy field. Feeling by your hands how the energy feels around your head and hair. If you can feel some different in the temperature round the head - check the haircut on that place. When the temperature is constant overall - the energy haircut is ready. And usually the hair is dry.

Closing words and gratitude

Last but not least we woult like to summerize the project, say a few thank yous and look forward to new projects.

Page 60: Sustainable development in hairdressing

The project ”Sustainable development in hairdressing” has been both interesting, rewarding and challenging. The concept of sustainable development is a big and ongoing process, therefore it has been a challenge to be able to focus on the central goals in the subject. Sometimes we have had a feeling that we are running round in an ecological jungle.

We have all different backgrounds regarding sustainable development in hairdressing, Fortbildningscentrum Prakticum started the first class for ecological hairdressers in 2003, and Denmark opened their first ”Green Salon” in 2005, when the other Nordic countries have a lesser experience of the ecological hairdressing field.

It has been challenging to developed common education criterias that serve us all on our different educations. Furthermore ECVET is a new concept and not all the countries has decided that they will adept the ECVET program in their curriculum. Due to these differences we decided to build an education triangle, based on different modules and smaller unit parts, for each country to adapt units in their own curriculum. This also gives us a chance to better provide mobility for our students starting autumn 2015.

To develop a new curriculum in each country is a big process, including much bureaucracy in each organization. The work is still on going to build in module 1 in each curriculum. In Finland we have a group of education providers where we working on to have the whole education triangle from our project tin our educational system, as a special education och a part of a special education exam. We are all aware of the fact that we are pioneers and working hard making a more sustainable future for the hairdressers. We have also got a very positive reaction from the medias.

For the future we need to educate the hairdressing teachers, teachers need mentoring and more information about sustainable development for the hairdressers, to be able to teach the students. We see the

future need and a logical continuing for this project would be a new project ”Teaching teachers”

We want to express our gratitude to the program Life Long Learning, Leonardo da Vinci, the main financer for our project. It has given us an opportunity to work on this subject ”Sustainable development in hairdressing”.

We also want to thank our partners, ”silent partners”, expertise, lecturers, organizations and our active members in our pilot groups, our own educators, authorities in the field that have worked with us and given their support to our project.

Last but not least the support from FBC Prakticum and the support of the National Agency CIMO:s director Mika for his everlasting humor.

We hope this book where we have gathered the criterias, videos, tasks for studies gives you information and inspirations to work on a more sustainable development for hairdressers and for your students.
