SCHOOL ABSENCE
Please remember to ring the school office 420 5477, Skool Loop App or txt 021
08151629 to leave an absentee message when
your child will not be attending due to illness,
holiday etc.
BUS CHANGES
Please report unforeseen bus
changes to the school office before 2pm.
Alternatively you can send your child with a
note to their class teacher in the
morning.
Apart from postponing or pausing of things such as assemblies, camps and interschool sports
from next week, increased hours and vigilance for our cleaning staff, the focus on good
hygiene practices and some interesting non-hand shake ideas being seen around the school as
we practice physical distancing, it is business as usual here at Kaukapakapa School. We are
still very much focussed on providing a great day of learning and meeting the needs of our
very special students.
Thank you for the support you have shown over the decision to postpone our camps. It was
an extremely hard call to make, but as always the welfare of our students is of paramount
importance. We have started working through the logistics of how camps might work at a
later date but it will take time, we started planning next week’s camps over a year ago. Thank
you for your patience. As I’m sure you can appreciate, trying to rebook for example, a group
of 75 going to Wellington is not an easy task in the current climate.
Possible school closure is definitely something on our minds at the moment. Any important
updates will be shared with you via email and SkoolLoop (this app allows for instant
notification, we encourage you to download this as a matter of priority onto your phone).
Current advice is that if a case of Covid-19 appears in a school, then the Ministry of Education,
in partnership with the Ministry of Health, will track, trace and manage the contacts of the
individual with the help of the school community. A school may be closed for several days whilst
this happens. Such cases will be dealt with on a school by school basis.
This approach is designed to quickly manage the virus. Should the virus move to widespread
‘person to person’ transmission then this would most likely change. We would take immediate
advice in such a situation.
I am receiving daily updates, sometimes multiple through the day from the Ministry of
Education. My plan is to keep calm, follow our pandemic plan, listen and act on what the
experts are saying, and carry on with the business of learning.
If your child has a cough, sore throat, sniffle or running nose, please keep them at home until
it goes. NOT because it's COVID-19, but children with coughs, sore throats, sniffles and running
noses should not be at school anyway!

We are currently working through the logistics of
postponing our camps and details around
payments that we are already holding. We hope
to have a clearer picture soon and will advise by
the end of the term as to what our plans for a
future camp will be.
If your child is feeling
unwell, please
remember to keep
them home from
school.
Please note, if children are sent to the office with
symptoms of cold or flu, we will be sending them
home to rest.

We continue to encourage our students to wash their
hands with soap and water before eating. Feel free to
send your child to school with their own hand sanitiser,
if you prefer this option.
Swimming for Years 4-8 will be finishing on Friday. Lunch time swims will
still be available until the end of term. Years 0-3 will continue
afternoon swims for as long as the warm weather continues.
The swimming pool will close to the public on Easter Monday, 13th April.
Pool keys can be returned any time from now until 30th April.
Board of Trustees Casual Vacancy for an elected trustee
A casual vacancy has occurred on the board of trustees for an elected parent representative, due to the resignation of trustee Paul Leslie. We would like to sincerely thank Paul for his commitment to and support of Kaukapakapa School, as a parent, over the past 12 years and on the Board of Trustees for the last 3.5 years. Paul was instrumental in the development of our wonderful shade structure and the solar implementation in 2019. Thanks for all your hard work Paul!
The board has resolved under section 105 of the Education Act 1989 to fill the vacancy by selection.
As per NZSTA guidelines this notice will be published in our local paper on 26 March 2020. If ten percent or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the board, within 28 days of this notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be held.
Any eligible voter who wishes to ask the board to hold a by-election should write to:

Our Potent Potions Just For You Room Six penned magic,
for their parents delight.
Enough magic to make Kaukapakapa
smile throughout the night.
First, we added 27 fine students,
skilled at telling a tale.
Mixed a cup of talent and strength,
so Miss J spotted the learning trail.
We mixed listening in a bucket,
and hard work with a mop.
Then boiled for an hour,
until slimy on top.
Sprinkling gently with adjectives,
leaving overnight,
we creatively mingled adverbs,
so you witnessed our potions take flight.
For Rm 6 there is nothing as gratifying
as watching you, our parents grin with delight!

Covid-19 Neighbourhood Assistance Resources In light of recent developments and the potential need for some in our communities to self-isolate we are sharing a couple of 'postcards' that can be used to communicate with your neighbours in the event that you, or they, need to self isolate. Please feel free to print and use the two postcards and circulate widely.
This is a really great article on New Zealand's response and how we each need to be responsible in our actions, not only for our own sakes, but to look after one another in our communities:
