Superintendent’s Message Tracy Hook, Hello!

I am extending best wishes to each and every one of you as we approach our holiday sea-

son! I believe we have many things to celebrate in our district. For example, we can cele-

brate and give thanks to the following important items:

Our Saydel Eagle Staff for their continued time and support of our students

Our students for their many hours of learning and commitment to extra-curricular

activities

Our continued focused work in the System for Teacher and Student Achievement

(TAP)

Our parents and families in this district who not only support Saydel, but believe in

our school district

Our School Board for their many hours of important school work and dedication

Saydel CSD as a leader in the state of Iowa education reform

We believe the future of Saydel is a place that parents and students will want to be. We

will continue to stay focused on our three long-term non-negotiable goals-Improving Stu-

dent Achievement, Enhancing-Culture-Image-Relationships, and Maximizing our Re-

sources. Please spread the word about our wonderful experiences that we afford to stu-

dents. I will reflect on the above three goals below.

The System for Teacher and Student Advancement

Over the past year and half, our school district teaching staff voted to implement a very

rigorous and accountable professional development model called TAP. TAP is based on

four interrelated elements:

Multiple Career Paths

Ongoing Applied Professional growth

Instructionally Focused Accountability

Performance-Based Compensation

PowerSchool

Parent Portal

PowerSchool is the District’s student information

system. The PowerSchool parent portal is available

to parents of Saydel students via a link on the Saydel

website at www.saydel.k12.ia.us .

This tool gives parents and students access to real-

time information including attendance, grades,

assignments, and school messages. The

PowerSchool parent portal helps to keep everyone

connected. Students have access to reminders

about assignments, parents are able to more fully

participate in their student’s progress and teachers

will use their grade books to share information with

parents and students.

We are extremely excited as a district to continue this pro-cess of upgrading our school district infrastructure.

We continue as a district to hold true of maximizing our re-

sources in many wonderful manners. All of our financial de-

cisions are made with the best intent of what is best for stu-

dents. We believe the referendum projects coupled with the

day to day needs of students is extremely important for a

rich and fulfilling experience for all. We applaud the dis-

trict’s focus on a quality education for our students while

providing excellent facilities for our students and patrons

bringing pride to our school community.

I look forward to seeing the students, parents, and communi-ty members at our winter activities.

Respectfully,

Tracy Hook,

Superintendent

As we began the current school year, every building in the

district is supported in this work through an Executive

Master Teacher, Master Teachers and Mentor Teachers.

We also have support through a site coach from the Na-

tional Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET). TAP is

NIET’s flagship initiative and is implemented in partner-

ship with agencies such as state departments of education.

This professional development reform model is closely

dovetailed to the Iowa Teacher and Leader Compensation

Education Reform Plan. The goal of any educational re-

form initiative is to make the teaching profession into a

highly rewarding career with an emphasis on providing a

quality education for all students. We are committed to

this work and believe it is the right work to do for stu-

dents. (See photo below)

Alejandra Rice (center), NIET Consultant, assists Master

Teachers with Field Test Training. On the left is WS Mas-

ter Teacher, Mary Salazar and on the right is Cornell Ele-

mentary Master Teacher, Traci Lust.

Last spring, the Saydel Community School District passed

a bond referendum of 7.9 million dollars to enhance the

image of our school district and to provide district patrons

with quality infrastructures for future years. We are

pleased to say that this process is moving along with plan-

ning and designing. Here are a few of those referendum

projects:

Woodside Middle School roof repairs (Fall completion)

High School roof repairs (Fall completion)

Planning and Design of High School weight room, cen-

tral office, front entry, north gym renovations and

renovation of additional space (May 2014)

Stadium renovation of synthetic turf, home bleachers

and parking lot additions (May 2014)

Old maintenance building torn down and new mainte-

nance building erected (Summer 2014)

Technology Upgrades throughout the district

(Summer 2014)

Cornell Winter Caring Project Each year

Cornell Elementary supports a Caring Project to give

back to the community. We have chosen to raise money

for Pennies for Patients. Pennies for Patients is a

program which works toward finding a cure for

Leukemia and Lymphoma as well as provides financial

support to families whose loved one has cancer. Kicking

off on December 2 with an assembly to explain Pennies

for Patients and get students excited to bring their

pennies, nickels and dimes, collection will end on

December 13. Each grade will compete in the Tallest

Snowman Race to see which grade can raise the most

money. Please send what change you can to help the

families who are working each day to defeat cancer.

Checks are also accepted; please make them out to LLS

or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Thank you for

your support!

Concert! First and Second Grade will sing in

the Saydel Auditorium at 7:00 on Thursday, December

5th. Come hear the students of Cornell!

The School Board Meeting is Monday, January 13th at

6:00 pm and the PTO meeting is Tuesday, January 14th,

6:30 pm. Everyone is always welcome to attend the

PTO meetings and the School Board Meetings.

Reminder: Monday, January 13th

there is an In-service for staff. NO SCHOOL for

students on that date.

Box Tops for Education PTO would like to remind you to save your Box Tops!

This helps supply books and educational materials for

Cornell. Save those Box Tops!

Woodside Middle School Mr. Feldhans, Principal

We would like to thank all of the Woodside parents that came out for Fall Conferences. Woodside had a 90% attendance rate as a building. We view conferences as a critical component of your child’s education. Conferences give us an opportunity to get input from you on how things are going at home. When we approach the education of our children as a team effort, our success rate will increase exponentially.

Woodside students have finished up Fall sports and are now fully entrenched in Winter Activity practices. The boy’s basketball teams are at Woodside bright and early each morning for practice and our girl’s are having practice right after school. Our wrestlers also have practice after school. Please make sure that you check the calendar for event dates and times

Saydel High School Kevin Schulte, Principal The school year is in full swing and we have engaged students in

learning opportunities that have encouraged students to grow as indi-

viduals. Through these opportunities we have experienced a number

of accomplishments by both students and staff. We are also looking

forward to future opportunities that will push our learning even fur-

ther. This includes our course registration taking place in December.

This fall we utilized a method of assessing student growth, MAP

testing. This test will help us measure student learning throughout

the year, but more importantly allow us to use the data to drive our

instruction. The data has helped bring focus to our school goal in

reading and even further clarify our focus on identifying key ideas

while reading. As a result of this data, Mrs. Dia Fenton and Mr.

Joshua Heyer, master teachers, are in the process field testing strate-

gies to present to our entire staff. This is a key component of the

TAP system. Not only did this data provide areas of focus for our

professional development, but also some areas for celebration. The

number of students who scored in the high and high-average ranges

were positives for our students.

Student Success

Already this fall our students have experienced a great deal

of success. These are a few of the great accomplishments

that have occurred both in and out of the classroom:

49 students named to the Gold Honor Roll (4.0 GPA),

139 students named to the Green Honor Roll (≥3.0

GPA),

31 students enrolled in a post secondary enrollment

option (DMACC, etc),

Marching Band was named Grand Champions in Fort

Dodge and a division 1 rating at the State Marching

Band Competition,

Casey Roberts qualified for the 3A State Cross Country

Meet,

Nevi Zerkle was named best drum major in three dif-

ferent competitions,

Riley Hayes won the ISDTA Small School Color

Guard Solo Competition for the second year in a

row,

Max Kayser and Nevi Zerkle were both selected as 1st

Alternates for the Iowa All-State Band

Staff Success

Our staff have also worked hard to experience success at a

variety of levels. Within the high school, our school reform

efforts with TAP have gone extremely well. This is in large

part due to the work of Mrs. Dia Fenton and Mr. Joshua Hey-

er, master teachers. Our mentor teachers, Mrs. Stacy Ascher,

Mrs. Alana Jackson, Mrs. Sherry Keegan-Bayeur, Mr. Mi-

chael Puffett, and Mrs. Cheryl Smith, have also played an in-

tegral in the early success of this monumental shift. Our

weekly professional development has centered on learning the

rubric expectations (26 indicators) for observation and evalua-

tion. The rubric clearly defines best practice in all areas of

teaching. Next semester we will be digging deep into strate-

gies to improve reading instruction. This will be driven by the

strategies that are currently being field tested by our master

teachers. This work is also being noticed throughout the state

as we have hosted several districts wanting to see what our

work is all about.

Course Registration

This fall our learning experiences for students are diverse and var-

ied. With the introduction of AP Spanish, iJAG, Strategic Reading,

and School to Work: Skills and Internship, we have been able to

offer students opportunities that meet them at their level of need.

Our School to Work Internship program, lead by Mrs. Stacy Ascher

has enrolled 9 students in valuable work experience that also earns

DMACC credit. The following organiziations are partnering with

Saydel this year: Iowa Cubs, Schuling Hitch, Altoona Campus,

Premier Marketing Group, Medicap Pharmacy,Hubbell Animal Hos-

pital, North Ankeny Hy-Vee, Physiotherapy Associates and Easter

Seals Bob & Billie Ray Child Development Center.

We are beginning our course registration process for the 2014-2015

school year. Throughout November students were working on I

Have a Plan Iowa (www.ihaveaplaniowa.gov) in order to help guide

their plans for after high school. This is a great time for parents/

guardians to engage their student in conversations about their future.

The classes a student takes in high school can have a huge impact on

student success both during and after high school.

See our registration guide by going to our guidance website (http://

www.saydel.k12.ia.us/GuidanceSHS.htm) to help guide conversa-

tions with students about their course selection. We have added a

couple courses that will bring new content and concepts to students:

Introduction to Engineering Design – This course is focused on

studens interested in the design, engineering, and other

technical fields. This course will be a hands-on, problem-

based and project-based class.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Reading Exploration – This

course is intended to foster a love reading and encourage

students to play a large role in determining the content they

read.

Hello Eagles,

The Winter Sports season is running in full stride and the Eagles are ready to battle on the court and on the mat. We look forward to see-

ing you in the stands this winter to support the Eagles on their way to a victory! But…….since it is winter, we need to be prepared in the

event that games/matches are rescheduled due to weather. If you have not already, get registered on our activities website

(www.saydel.k12.ia.us) to receive cancellation or postponement notices whenever they happen. Once you are on the calendar, look for

the icon in the upper right corner.

General rules for practices

1. Early outs: there will be no practices when school is let out early.

2. School Closed: generally, practices will not be held unless administrative approval is given based on current weather conditions. In those cases, practices will be for varsity athletes only and in the afternoon hours.

The Saydel Music and Athletic Booster Clubs want to invite you to be a part of these wonderful organizations. The Music Boosters meet

the 1st Wednesday of every month at 6:30 in the high school music room. The Athletic Boosters meet the third Wednesday of every

month at 6:00 in the high school media center. These groups are here to help promote and support ALL our programs ‐ including middle

school and high school! Many times we forget that these groups are not just for the high school programs. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE

INVOLVED!!! If you have a child who is just beginning his/her journey through middle school and scholastic athletics, we would appre-

ciate your viewpoints and involvement with our organization. Your leadership will help mold the future of our programs. The Booster

Clubs also need your assistance in volunteering your time with the concession stand. Help is needed from parents of all high school and

middle school (7‐12 grades) students participating in sports and activities. We ask that if your child is involved in an extra‐curricular

sport or activity, that you volunteer at least one time to work in the concession stand. Please contact your child’s coach or the varsity

coach for a schedule. Thank you for supporting the Booster Clubs and giving back to our programs!

Cross Country

The Heart of Iowa Conference championship meet went well for the Eagles. The race was hosted by North Polk and ran at Iowa

State University's collegiate cross country course. Saydel was able to place one boy on the All-Conference team in Junior Casey Roberts,

who finished 5th overall. Freshman David Parker finished one slot out of all-conference recognition, finishing 15th with only the top 14

receiving medals. It was a hard fought battle for Parker, who was running his last race of the season due to a stress fracture found later in

the week. The boys’ team finished well, even without being full strength, taking home 4th place in the 10 team conference, only 3 points

behind 3rd place Nevada.

Saydel Eagle runner Casey Roberts (junior) qualified to run in the state cross country meet for the first time. This is the first Saydel

runner since Travis Newman in 2008 to qualify for the meet. He took 3rd place at the district meet in Winterset, running a 17:01 time. He

is currently ranked #26 in 3A by the Iowa Association of Track and Field Coaches.

At the end of the season banquet awards were handed out for runners for Most Improved, Most Valuable, and the Eagle award. Win-ners were as follows:

Eagle Award: Kyle Walter and Maeghen Easler

Most Improved: Joey Hassett and Emma Bowman

Most Valuable: Casey Roberts and Lyndsay Bianchi

This year, the team will be losing 2 seniors but look forward to continuing to have a strong team next year. We are always welcom-

ing and looking for more runners to help fill out the team and add competition to varsity spots. Please let Coach Steve Gebhart now if you

are interested in running for Saydel Cross Country and be a part of our future success!!!

Volleyball

Varsity volleyball had a struggling year; however, they kept trying to work for that elusive first win. We had our banquet night where

we handed out MVP, MIP and Eagle awards.

MVP went to Courtney Hill for Varsity and Melanie Gustafson for JV.

MIP went to Courtney Hill for Varsity and Samantha Johnson for JV.

Eagle went to Lizzy Miklus for Varsity and Lesa Wicks for JV

Congrats to those players and good job to all the players this year.

Football

Sunday November 3rd the Saydel football team held their awards night. Results from team voting and all-district voting are listed be-

low. We want to send out a big thank you to all that contributed to the 2013 football season!!!

The Saydel Football program took another step forward as every level of 7-12 football secured at least one win and the overall record

of the program finished with 14 wins overall.

New Testing Given K-11

Kindergarten through Third Graders Take “Children’s Progress” (CPAA)

The CPAA is an adaptive assessment of major grade‐appropriate literacy and mathematics concepts in pre‐k through 3rd grade. It’s administered on the computer, with a child‐friendly, animated format that keeps students motivated and engaged. Students receive positive feedback after correct answers; incorrect answers are followed by additional hints that give them a second chance and the opportunity to learn while taking the assessment. Questions adjust based on individual performance, ensuring that every child is presented with content that is appro-priate, not frustrating or boring. By eliminating test anxiety, this format helps all children show their full range of skills in a supportive environment and allows teachers to pinpoint any misunderstandings more precisely. This is NOT a high‐stakes test used to evaluate your child, but rather a tool to guide the teacher’s instruction. The CPAA takes about 20‐30 minutes (15‐20 minutes for the youngest children). The CPAA is usually administered 3 or more times each year to help teachers get a better idea of where to focus instruction. Teachers use the CPAA to identify the concepts students have already grasped, what they’re ready to learn next and what types of activities can help reinforce that learning. Results are used as a benchmark to help plan the most effec-tive instruction for the whole class as well as for each child.

4th through 11th Graders take “Measures of Academic Progress” (MAP)

MAP computerized tests are adaptive and offered in reading, language usage and Mathematics. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half of the items correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level. Although the tests are not times, it usually takes students one hour to complete each MAP test. Our first test was given in October. Grades 4-8 plan to test again in January and May. Grade 9-11 plan to test again in late spring. MAP assessments are used to measure a student’s progress in school. The scale used to measure growth is called a RIT scale. The RIT scale is an equal-interval scale much like feet and inches on a yard stick. It is used to chart aca-demic growth. MAP tests are important to teachers because they keep track of progress in basic skills. They let teachers know where a student’s strengths are and if help is needed in any specific areas. Teachers use this infor‐mation to help guide instruction in the classroom.

OPEN ENROLLMENT NOTICE

Please contribute to the SAYDEL HIGH SCHOOL AFTER PROM CELEBRATION

Saydel High School – 5601 NE 7th Street – Des Moines, IA 50313

What is After Prom? Prom night is one of the most exciting events in a child’s high school life. Each year across the United

States, hundreds of teens are killed or injured in alcohol/drug-related accidents connected with their prom night celebrations.

Communities, school officials and parents have stepped up their efforts in recent years to prevent these tragedies from happen-

ing. After-Prom is a supervised party held in a controlled, secure environment that is alcohol and drug free. It is open to all

juniors, seniors and their guest regardless of their attendance at the prom.

Who Sponsors After Prom? For many years, the parents of the Junior Class at Saydel High School have been responsible for

After Prom Party following the Junior-Senior Prom. We rely heavily from businesses and parents for donations to help

us provide the financing of this event. We've also have other fund-raising efforts: multiple can drives, raffles, working

concession stands, Father-Daughter Dance and Chuck-a-Duck, etc.

How does After Prom work: This spring the After Prom Party will be held from 11:30 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. on April 26/27,

2014 at Incredible Pizza. A few weeks prior to prom, there will be sign-up sheets at the high school so students can sign up to

attend. The dance is over at 11:00 p.m. and the students will have until midnight to arrive at the high school. At that time

they will be checked onto buses by high school administration. The expense of the buses & drivers has been paid for by the Af-

ter Prom Committee. While they are there, there will be food and drinks available. During this time they will be able to par-

ticipate in many activities, a hypnotist will perform and prizes will be given out. This will be a lock-in event. All students

must sign-up in advance and will be required to ride the bus. No student will be allowed to drive and enter at Incredible

Pizza and no students will be allowed to leave the event early. The buses will leave the high school at midnight and return by

4:30 a.m.

How can you help? The cost to host this event for our students is approximately $15,000. We are asking for donations to help

us reach our goal. All donations are tax-deductible. In order to budget for this, we would like to receive all donations by March

1, 2014. Please fill out the attached form and return to address listed. Checks should be made out to Saydel After Prom.

**If your business has gift cards/coupons/certificates that they would like to donate you may send them also to the addresses

listed.

We are counting on you to make this year's event a success. These young adults are our future. The After Prom Party gives

these students a safe, fun, and alcohol/drug free place to go after their prom. Please help keep our students safe.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact: Deb McEachron at 669-9329 ([email protected]) or Cheri Roberts

at [email protected]

Thank you for your time and support.
