What to Do
All healthy individuals between the ages of 18 – 60 can register to be marrow/stem cell donors.
Initially a donor consent form is completed along with a cheek swab sample.
If you match, marrow is collected from your blood through a process called apheresis. Your body
will naturally replace the marrow/stem cells in a few weeks.
Volunteer by organizing and conducting marrow registry drives. Call SAMAR 718-592-0821
What to Know
A marrow/blood stem cell transplant is the most effective treatment for the 10,000 patients diagnosed each year with
leukemia and other fatal blood disorders.
Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their racial and ethnic background.
A minority patient has 20-25 % less chance of finding a match on the registry than a Caucasian patient, which is a
tremendous disadvantage for the patient
Out of 9 million donors only 160,000 are of South Asian origin.
70% of patients do not have a matched donor in their family.
