PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome
PSGMC is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
First, i would like to thank all of our incredible supporters for their gifts of donations, ads in our programs, gift certificates for our auctions and their
unwavering confidence in our building a “Chorus Like no other.” We are very excited about our PsGMC attending this summer’s GaLa Choruses Convention in Denver. nearly 50 of our members will be joining 130 choruses and more than 6,000 voices from around the world including China and Cuba (the first time they have had representation). the GaLa Choruses organization leads the north american LGBt choral movements, with their dedication in helping choruses,
become more effective, both artistically and administratively. they assist emerging choruses and facilitate networking and training for established groups and produce the world’s largest LGBt performing arts event. the PsGMC is closely aligned with GaLa’s mission as we also work with a variety of youth choruses including our recent concert with the Cathedral City High school Choir and the Raymond Cree Middle school Choir. on behalf of the Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus Board of Directors, we thank you for attending “Fascinatin’ Rhythm.” You are in for an incredible “Moving” experience! Please check our website www.PsGMC.com for the announcement and to purchase tickets to our 2016-2017 season.

at age 16, Bruce became the youngest member ever to be selected to sing with the oakland symphony Chorus, and achieved another “first” by singing with
the Chorus’ “all-star” ensemble. He was introduced to barbershop music at the U.s. naval academy, where he sang tenor in the Usna Barbershop Quartet for four years. His “high point” of vocal achievement was competing at the Barbershop Harmony society’s international Championship competition, where his quartet “Main event” was a semi-finalist. Bruce has sung and held numerous leadership positions with the san Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los angeles, and now with the Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus, where he proudly serves as second tenor section Leader, and as founder and conductor of “the arrangement”, PsGMC’s select Barbershop Chorale.

Kurt Jordan developed an intense interest in learning the piano after having seen The Phantom of the Opera with his parents at age 10. He studied under the guidance of Joann
algier throughout middle and high school, during which time he discovered a love of music using multiple pianos. this passion was further explored at azusa Pacific University while studying with Dr. Robert sage. Kurt performed several recitals of material he arranged for two and three pianos, the recordings of which have received radio play in Los angeles, santa Barbara, santa Cruz, Boston, austin, and Beirut. in 2009, Kurt had the honor of performing the West Coast premiere of alvin Curran’s 7.5 hour long piano song cycle, Inner Cities 1-13, as well as the U.s. premiere of movement 14 at Burning Man in 2013. Kurt graduated from azusa Pacific University in 2010 with a Ba in Music theory and Composition. in 2013, Kurt became the accompanist for two small groups within the PsGMC. Most recently, he has been involved as the accompanist for songshine, a non-profit organization that teaches speech therapy through music for people with Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

Martin has been involved in music and theater, in some fashion, since his youth as a dancer/choreographer. His talents include being a DJ, costume designer,
hair and make-up artist, as well as assisting in direction and producing. When he stepped into the signing world in 1995, in the beginning, Martin would watch performance interpreters and be in awe and think, that was not possible for a person whose second language is asL. all that changed, when he moved to the valley from seattle, nearly ten years ago. “it is a privilege and an honor to be the signer for the PsGMC!”

We sing of the Fascinatin’ Rhythm of Life. the rhythm in the words, the music, the life around us. We also play drums and percussion that are part of every culture around the word.
Cy Coleman wrote “Rhythm of Life” for the Broadway musical “sweet Charity.” it is an excellent description of the rhythm around us. the rhythm of life that “puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet.”
“summer is a-Coming in” is the earliest known canon written about 1250 aD. accompaniment for songs at this time, would have been hand drums, tambourines and perhaps triangles or finger cymbals. this canon can be sung in as many as 12 parts, with the bass ostinato also being sung in a 2-part round.
Listen to four folk songs from different parts of the world, each uses that same drum accompaniment. Funga alafia is a welcoming song from nigeria; “tongo” is a traditional rowing song from the solomon islands; “Makua,” a stick passing game from new Zealand and “Down Down Baby” is an american hand-clapping street game. the basic drum rhythm is also the famous clapping/stamping rhythm that starts the rock classic “We Will Rock You.”
Leonard Bernstein wrote “Mass” for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. “Gloria tibi” is accompanied with bongos in a very fun and lively 5/8 rhythm. Here it is also danced by chorus member, simeon Den.
“nine Hundred Miles” was made famous by Woody Guthrie. Legend says that Woody learned it from an african-american shoeshine boy in okemah, oklahoma. We add shakers and tambourines to the traveler’s lament that he is too far from home. although it’s often mistaken for a folksong, “Dem Bones” was written by african-american author and composer, James Weldon Johnson. it is based on the Bible verse from ezekiel. We have added various “found” percussion sounds.
sometimes a song just needs a simple drum rhythm to provide all the necessary accompaniment. “there Comes a time” is such a song. no piano, just voices, accompanied by drum.
no drums in “Ritmo.” the percussion sound comes from clapping, snapping and stamping. the accompaniment is for four hands at the piano. Ritmo is
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Rhythm. the chorus sings of rhythm. “Clap your hands to the rhythm. Lift your voices. Lift your heart. We will sing with joy. With love and hope.”
Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus is fortunate to have too incredible pianists. We feature Joel Baker and Kurt Jordan in a piano 4-hand arrangement of “a Folia de um Bloco infantil” by Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos.
accompanied by congas, the chorus sings the call-response, “Freedom Come.” in pioneer churches across the United states, congregations learned songs and heard the word through the singing of call-response songs. the congregation response is always the same, but the verse tells a story or inspires the congregation.
aaron Copland reigns as one of our country’s top composers of the 20th century. Creating a new musical harmony, often based on folk songs, Copland wrote many compositions about pioneer america. His opera, “the tender Land” tells of a farm family in the Midwest. Family and friends eagerly celebrate their lives with a barn dance where everyone comes to “stomp Your Foot.” no drums but a very percussive piano accompaniment for 4-hands adds to the delightful and fun song.
nothing is more american than the sound of snare and bass drums. We use them here to accompany our barbershop ensemble in “God Bless america.” We also add the “trap set” to “Java Jive.”
the rhythmic quality of the music of the Caribbean is addicting and intoxicating. “Conga Rhythm,” a medley of two hits by Gloria estefan, with congas, afuches, and gankoqu compels you to “Come on shake your body, baby, do the conga,” because “the rhythm is gonna get you!”
the chorus creates their own rainstorm for “the Wreck of the Julie Plante.” Listen to the sad tale of the sinking of a ship on the Great Lakes. “Finnan Haddie” is our favorite dish, made from codfish and milk. Hand drums and tambourines help to tell this story of love lost.
in urban areas around the world, you will find young men on the sidewalks and in the streets, playing on buckets. a bucket is the accompaniment for this very unusual setting of a whimsical, rhythm-driven dialogue between an R&B singer and a member of the British aristocracy, as moderated by a U.s. drill sergeant. the title of this song is “sound off.”
We end with our title song, “Fascinating Rhythm” by George Gershwin.

the Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus endowment Fund
Given the opportunity, most people would like to leave a generous legacy to organizations they valued during their lifetime. the Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus is building long-term endowment support through a comprehensive planned giving program. The Endowment Fund is at the heart of this program to secure our financial future and ensure that there will always be a gay men’s choral group performing in the Coachella Valley.Planned giving is typically done in conjunction with estate planning, and is a viable option for donors of all income levels. Depending on how a planned gift is set up, it may also let you receive a stream of income for life, earn higher investment yield or reduce your capital gains or estate taxes. Forever in song honors all PSGMC donors, living and deceased, who make gifts through a will, trust, life insurance or other types of estate plans. This type of generous support helps to ensure the future of the organization and our ability to entertain, enrich and serve the community. For more information about making a planned gift to PSGMC, please contact Joe Jackson at [email protected].

There’s a reason we’re the leader
We’re Forest Lawn. Since 1906, more families have chosen to come to us for their funeral and cremation needs than any other provider in Southern California. The reason is simple. We provide a more personal type of attention, a more professional level of service, and a wider range of price options. Drop by at any time and we’d be happy to show you how a little bit of planning can make a big difference.
