Sarkarpathy is a village in Annamalai hills, Tamil Nadu. Most of the

inhabitants are farmers or mill workers. On an average they earn about

Rs.200/ (about $4) a day. They are out at work for major part of the day .

There is a primary school in Sarkarpathy. Nearest high school is located

about 7 kms away. The children are provided with free text books by the

school. The bus to pick up the school children stops about a km and half

from the school. The children need to cross a stretch of the forest to

access the bus stop. Due to fear of elephants the children return early by

4 pm to the village and miss about 2 hours of schooling every day.

Sometimes the children do not attend school if they encounter elephants

on the way to bus stop.

The quality of education imparted at the schools is not up to desired

levels. The children lag behind considerably. The children also do not see

value in education and do not show willingness or interest in attending

school. The parents are themselves not educated and cannot support

their children’s study at home.

Wild Wing Society, an NGO registered with the Government, has started

a free study centre in the village and has requested team Sarkarpathy to

find a solution to bring up the level of education of children

commensurate with their age

The ChallengeDNLE PROJECT – Team Sarkarpathy

Page 4: Sarkarpathy - DNLE Project

Objective

To bring up the knowledge level of the children of village Sarkarpathy commensurate with the class corresponding to their age

Having brought up their knowledge to the level commensurate with their age integrate them with the formal schooling system so that they effectively participate in the schools in their neighborhood and complete schooling.

only local graduate in the village has been hired to coach the students and is available everyday in the evening for 2 hours

Two volunteers from a neighboring town about 120 kms away have volunteered to work at the centre on weekends

The graduate student has been provided with a laptop

55 children have enrolled in the study centre

Activity based learning lessons are available with the government school which need to be implemented

NGO Wild Wing Society has requested team Sarkarpathy to come up with

innovative solution and has agreed to provide funding if the team comes up

with a sustainable plan

Integrate learning modules with school learning in a phased manner

Implement learning

Identify volunteer teachers to deliver learning modules

Incorporate activity based learning lessons available with the school in to the learning modules

Convert school curriculum to learner oriented interactive and engaging learning modules

Identify medium both digital and non digital for delivery of learning modules

Form design and development team for creating interactive and engaging learning modules

Page 11: Sarkarpathy - DNLE Project

Form Design and development team

Identify volunteers for developing learning modules

Teachers/Retired personnel/Student volunteers

Software professional/Pedagogy specialists

Graphic designers

Distribute template to developers

Create template for learning modules

Provide instructions on creation of learning modules

Decide on authoring tools and output format

Prepare time schedule for completion and delivery

Page 12: Sarkarpathy - DNLE Project

Carry out a study of the delivery platform for learning modules

Mobile devicesInexpensive tabletsUsed laptopsHand outs and activity sheets

Try out functionality of each platform based on their battery life, infrastructure and maintenance support available in the local environment

Test it out with the users both children and user volunteers

Firm up on the delivery medium

Identify delivery medium

Add and train

volunteer teachers

Supplement existing resource of 3 teachers/volunteers by at least 2

more volunteers

Train them on their role as mentor, guide ,coach and solution

provider

Train them on delivery of learning

modules and assessment

Pilot

Monitor and study their learning progress for three months

Teachers utilize the time at study centre to guide, coach and solve the difficulties children faced during learning

Provide the children with learning modules

Groups may differ for each subject

Divide the existing children in to groups of 3 to 5 based on their existing knowledge levels

Create learning modules for English and Math for standards 1 to 5

Page 16: Sarkarpathy - DNLE Project

Based on the pilot study decide what improvements/inputs

are required for• Designers and developers of learning modules

• Delivery medium

• Teachers

Carry out improvements

Finalise a time bound schedule and plan of action for• Bringing up the children to the knowledge level

commensurate with their age for each subject

• Integrate the new methodology with the school learning in a

phased manner

• Monitor progress of children in school

Business Model Non Profit

Project will be executed on a Build, operate and transfer(BOT) and non profit

model

Funds expected from Wild Wing Society,an NGO registered with Government,

if they are satisfied with the plan

Local volunteers willing to extend administrative support

Once the project proves its worth it can be scaled up for implementation in a

nearby school run by Forest department

If successful the methodology can be transferred to the Government school run

by Forest department and sustained through school budget

Conclusion

Thank you for going through the presentation. This

is a real life scenario. After piloting the project with

55 children of the village Sarkarpathy the team will

attempt to scale it up for implementation in the

Government school in the vicinity of the village and

ultimately integrate the methodology with the school

curriculum in a phased manner which will ensure

wider reach and sustainability.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering but education is where my heart and soul

lies. I currently teach Communicative English (for ESL speakers) to college students. I

firmly believe that the future happiness of my country and indeed the whole world lies

in the education that we give our children. In my free time, I work with various like-

minded people and organizations to uplift the quality of, and access to, education in

the various tribal communities of my home state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India.

About Us

Ananth Subramanian – email: [email protected]

I served in the Indian Navy as a commissioned officer for over 20 years and thereafter

in private sector in the human resources function for over 15 years and retired as

head of human resources. Through out my work life of 36 years, I was extensively

involved in training and development. I am retired now and spending a considerable

amount of time in learning to design and develop eLearning modules.

I very much desire to make a contribution towards education of underserved children.

This has what motivated me to join the DNLE course and the gains have been

substantial and has taken me a step closer to fulfilling my desire.
